Laphi
Hello, my name is Laphi. My animal id is #228331. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/31/2025.
Laphi is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During his intake exam he was very loose, wiggly, and seeking attention from handlers. He has remained social with handlers throughout his stay. However, on leash his reactivity has been escalating in intensity. He has been observed to hard bark, loudly vocalize, and pull towards dogs with a tense body while on leash. He is not easily redirectable and at one point had to be held back by his harness. Medically, he apparently has dermatitis and otitis externa.

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! A volunteer writes: As soon as I met Laphi, I knew for the rest of our time together I would be calling him Laphi my lovebug. As soon as Laphi saw my leash, he showed off his most adorable happy wiggles. Off we went on our first walk together as if we had known each other forever. As we walked, we were both feeling great strolling down the street. I can't stop smiling watching Laphi's adorable (what I have dubbed) his sniff-and-stride. Laphi loved my treats and gave me the best Laphi lean-in as he enjoyed my pets. We had so much fun together, I did not want our time together to end. I could easily picture snuggling up on the couch with lovebug Laphi and cuddling all night!

He does not greet the other dog and focuses on removing the muzzle with his paws. 8/6/25: A decoy dog is used to greet Laphi while off leash. He runs up to the dog with a neutral body and rapidly wagging tail. He walks around the dog sniffing. The decoy dog falls over and Laphi play bows and nudges the 'dog' with his nose before beginning to sniff again. He briefly wraps his front paws around the other 'dog's' backside then moves away.
Summary (5):: 8/12/25: It is reported that Laphi is highly dog reactive on the street. Pulling very hard towards them, sometimes even on his hind legs, with a tense body. 8/5/25: Laphi is standing at the front of kennel with dilated pupils, a neutral body, and barking with a high flagging tail as handler approaches He is easily leashed using a treat a a lure and taken to the street for a brief walk. He pulls moderately on leash, not reacting to people passing by, but when spotting dogs, he will hyper fixate, stare, and pull very hard towards them. Handler is able to intercept behavior and redirect with treats. He is receptive and will sit unprompted awaiting his reward. He is returned to kennel without issue 8/4/25: Staff reported that Laphi was reacting towards people that pass by him on the street. He will attempt to jump on people that pass by. He would pull very hard to the point the staff member had to also attach the slip lead to him in order to walk him. They held the harness as well due to the pulling. 8/3/25- It was observed that Laphi was vocalizing with a tense body, darting in various directions. Hyper focusing on dogs nearby and in the play yard. 07/31/25. Laphi has been moved to a bottom kennel. He is wiggly bodied, alert barking as handler approaches, intermittently standing on hind legs pawing at door. Laphi is easiy leashed, after exiting kennel allows for easy clipping to harness. Laphi consistently pulls hard out of MACC, sees various MMB and LMB dogs entering driveway area of MACC with staff, begins to tense body and hard bark as dogs are within 20 feet of him. Verbally redirected is inconsistently effective, he does redirect for treats but not reliably. Laphi maintains hard pulling on sidewalk. Laphi checks in visually for verbal cues, and takes treats from handler, understands sit commands. Upon returning to MACC Laphi maintains hard pulling, forward body and furrowed brow. Upon seeing another LMB in driveway Laphi resumes hard barking and pulling toward the dog, also briefly thrashes on leash (harness). Leash pressure is used to redirect Laphi into MACC. Laphi baulks outside of his kennel, treats are successfully used to lure Laphi into kennel.
Summary (6):: 7/30/25: Staff reported that when removing Laphi from kennel he attempted to kennel fight with the dog below him. In the backyard, he is jumping up and bouncing off the fences in the yard barking and vocalizing towards passing dogs. 07/24/25: Laphi is wiggly bodied toward front of his kennel as handler approaches. When attempting to leash, Laphi intermittently jumps to hind legs and paws at leash. Treats are used to keep Laphi down, and he is easily leashed, Laphi pancakes initially when being picked up, but he tolerates being lifted up out of his top kennel. He is switched from standard slip to harness clip. He pulls hard out of kennel room and MACC and maintains hard pulling on sidewalk. When seeing by dogs with MOP or Staff Laphi visually fixates and begins high-pitch whining. He pulls a few steps in the direction of the dog but stops and vocalizes with high-pitch sounds. He maintains a mixture of wiggly and tense body while pulling hard for walk. Upon re-entering MACC he baulks before entering kennel room, he is lifted and placed back into kennel without issue and takes treats through kennel door. 07/10/25: Laphi is at front of kennel as handler approaches. Laphi begins to alert bark, with loose body. Laphi takes treats through kennel door. Laphi allows for leashing, however begins to pancake when leash pressure is applied. Handler is able to lift Laphi up from top Kennel and placed on ground. Laphi pulls with high pressure out of MACC to side walk. When Laphi notices another dog outside of driveway door, he pulls hard while high pitch barking. Handler is able to get Laphi to break line of sight verbally while using leash pressure to pull Laphi away, however Laphi immediately tries to re-establish visual on dog on sidewalk. As Laphi is walked about 30-40 feet away Laphi's panting and furrowed brow begin to dissipate. Laphi maintains light-medium pulling on walk, checks in with handler during verbal cues and takes treats. Laphi re-enters MACC without issue, is lifted up into top kennel safely.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Laphi so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to lack of basic manners we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Laphi has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Laphi has been observed to hard bark and pull towards dogs with a tense body while on leash. Laphi will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
