Mishu is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

The Foster Writes: Meet Mishu! This beautiful boy is starts out shy around new people but warms up to them quickly. He loves giving his loved ones-friendly head bumps. His favorite activity is to play with toys! His favorite toy is a feather wand - he will spend countless minutes pouncing and jumping around the room to catch it. He also loves laser toys and plushie toys with catnip inside. When he's not playing, Mishu loves to window watch the world outside or curl into a bagel and nap! He does like pets and ear scratches, but would prefer those on his own terms. If you're looking for a playful and independent cat, Mishu is the boy for you! What my friends at ACC say about me: Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I may enjoy casually batting at a toy mouse every now and then, but my favorite activity is snuggling on my favorite person's lap! My purr motor is always running! I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Mishu had an extremely tight body upon intake. His carrier was pretty small so we thought his tight body might've stemmed from that but once in the admissions office, we noticed very dilated pupils. His carrier was opened up and he stuck his head out and allowed to be collared but his body remained tight. Slight lip licking but not too much. He was given the option to walk into new carrier but was very reluctant and was just trying to hide. Had to be picked up and placed in new carrier. No aggressive behavior but FAS nonetheless. Did not MC scan to avoid further FAS.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/2/22 At front of shelf sitting up with head and ears forward. When spoken to and opening the door, she ignores dry treats offered, tenses up, widens her eyes, and gets up. When reaching close with puree treat on the scratcher tool, she hisses softly and retreats to the back of the top cubby. While retreating, she tolerates me stroking her body, but she keeps her body and tail low as she crawls away. Mishu appears to be a little conflicted; she will rub her face on the wall, lean in for cheek rubs and when pet on the head, but also wrap her tail tightly around her body and keep her head down when receiving attention. 5/3/22 On the ledge with a straight stare. Seems unsure and slowly walks away from the scratcher tool. Unable to pet. Lip licks from inside the cubby. Showed no interest for offered treats. Needs time to adjust. 5/4/22 At back of top cubby lying down with front limbs extended. When spoken to and opening the door, she tenses up and ignores dry treats offered. When reaching close with puree treat on scratcher tool, she slowly sits up, leans back, and widens her eyes. She turns her head away when attempting to place treats on her lips. When petting her head with the tool, she looks down and slightly tilts her ears. When slowly moving down to stroke her back, she nips at the air, missing the tool, and hisses. Still shy and sensitive, a little unsure about touch. 5/5/22 Mishu was wary when briefly petted along his back with the scratcher tool. He leaned away avoiding contact. Hissed at me to be left alone. Placed party mix treats on the ledge, he still shows no interest. 5/27/22 Resting on his cage bedding on approach. Alert with eyes wide. He quickly withdrew from the scratcher tool. However, allowed brief pets along the head but along the body he hissed and leaned forward with mouth open attempting to bite. 6/2/22 Lying down next to den, remains, calm and relaxed when spoken to and opening the door. Ignores dry and puree treats offered, turns head away when attempting to place on his lips. Allows petting on head, squinting eyes, and turns head down for cheek rubs. When stroking his body, he looks back and hisses. Sensitive to touch on body, tolerates petting on head. 6/3/22 During enrichment with the electric wired butterfly Mishu showed immediate interest. He quickly engaged the front following wherever the toy went and whacked the toy around through the cage bars. Enjoyed playtime session. 6/4/22 At the front, curious, allows, even seems to like petting on the cheek and head but after a while and in response to petting on the head he pulled back and hissed. Ignored treats but eats and then rolls in catnip. *Enrichment notes continued in GAN*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Calm
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Overstimulation,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: We are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address her inappropriate elimination; however, at the care center he has been observed using the litter box. Mishu may lean in and appreciate cheek rubs, but then gets a little overwhelmed when receiving too much attention. He may whine, grab or swat with both front limbs, hiss, and flatten his ears when overstimulated.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mishu is a calm and independent cat. He was resting on his cage bedding with head high and ears forward. When spoken to and opening the door he remained in place. He sniffs offered treats and tolerates petting on the head, but is unsure about touch along the body. When stroking his back, he flicks his tail, looks back at the scratcher tool, low grumbles, hisses and strikes at the scratcher tool. The assessor pulls the tool away and pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Mishu tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
