Titan
Hello, my name is Titan. My animal id is #229360. I am a desexed male brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/12/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTitan is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. When Titan first arrived at the care center, he was fearful, displaying tense body, lip licking and backing away from people he passes during walks. Over time, he has warmed up, allowing for petting and handling and greeting staff with soft body and wagging tail. However, he has recently begun to display intense reactivity towards other dogs, vocalizing when he sees and hears them and has become hypervigilant when out of kennel, looking around and pulling towards dogs in other kennel rooms. Medically, Titan is apparently healthy.

Medically, Titan is apparently healthy. Titan has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has displayed high levels of On-Leash Reactivity. When exiting kennel he will pull hard and vocalize intensely toward dogs he passes. He has also displayed high levels of FAS and has been observed to lip lick and hard stare at handlers and people passing him with a tense body. When interacting with handlers Titan has expressed social behavior and is highly treat motivated. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Summary (5):: 8/3/25: As handler approaches the kennel, Titan is observed to be barking and pacing in his kennel. Once Titan sees the handler, he then becomes loose and wiggly. He’s then leashed with a treat lure with ease. He is removed from the kennel with a short and tight leash as he attempts to kennel fight with neighboring kennels. He’s taken to the street for a street walk where he is walking along side the handler on a loose leash. Titan would pull hard towards spots for him to sniff and relieve himself, but afterwards would stop pulling. As he’s walking he keeps turning his head to watch the handler with a wagging tail and soft body. Handler calls his name, he would then sit and is given a treat which he takes with a soft mouth. He would occasionally jump on the handler soliciting pets. Titan would then spot a dog and would become tense and attempt to pull hard towards the dog. Handler pulls Titan away and breaks sight of the dog, Titan then relaxes and continues to walk on a loose leash again. As re-entering the shelter, Titan is then clipped and would pull very hard towards his kennel. He’s placed inside with no issue and interaction is then ended. 8/2/25: Titan is sitting at the front of his kennel barking and pacing. As handler removes kennel blocker, Titan becomes loose and wiggly as handler uses a soft & high pitched voice speaking to him. He’s fed treats through the bars and followed by a treat lure. He’s then easily leashed and removed from the kennel with a short and tight leash. Once out of the kennel, he attempts to pull and vocalizes to the neighboring kennels. Once out in the hallway, he’s still kept on a short and tight leash as he’s trying to pull towards the other dog rooms. He’s then taken to the street and would relieve himself immediately. He would walk on a slight loose leash ahead of the handler, constantly checking in and looking back at the handler while walking. As handler calls his name he would stop and become loose and wiggly leaning in for pets. Titan would then spot a dog and would become tense, handler calls his name and feeds him a treat. He would continue to walk with the handler, but wouldn’t break contact with the passing dog. When the dog is out of Titan’s sight he would go back to watching the handler. As entering the shelter, Titan would begin to pull very hard. He is then clipped and kept on a short leash again, once he reaches his kennel he would attempt to pull towards the neighboring kennel and attempt to kennel fight. He is then muscled into his kennel and the leash is easily removed.
Summary (6):: 8/1/25: Titan is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. He continues to bark as the handler tries to leash him and is able to be distracted with treats. He then bolts out of kennel and tries to kennel fight by barking and pulling towards the dogs in kennels that are next to him. He continues to pull hard and vocalize and bark while lunging towards a handler in the hallway and trying to pull into the kennel room as they were being passed. He then spins around onto the handler and the handler has to stiff arm him while entering the yard. He is able to settle and shake off a few times after walking around the perimeter of the yard a few times. He is then able to focus and sit for the handler to receive treats with a loose body. On the way back to kennel, he becomes tense and begins vocalizing, growling and barking on his hinds kegs while trying to pull into the kennel rooms before entering his kennel. 8/1/25: It is reported by staff that Titan will High pitch barking and screaming while walking in the hallway, pulling handlers into the open kennel room in an attempt to kennel fight. 7/27/25: It was reported on the whiteboard that Titan's "dog reactivity is getting worse outside, pulling hard as possible towards dogs" 7/20/25: Titan is standing at the front of his kennel while hard barking as handler approaches. He pulls hard towards the dogs in kennels on the way out of the kennel room. On the walk, he would hard stare at dogs and people. He is not able to be redirected with treats or toys. He continues to look for the dogs and people as he walks away. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Titan so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Single-Pet Home: Due to Titans extreme reactivity to other dogs he has displayed in care we recommend placement in a home without other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Sam associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Recommended No Dog Parks: Based off Titans reactivity toward dogs on leash and his difficulty being redirected, we recommend Titan not visit any dog parks. Place with a New Hope Partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in care, the behavior department recommends Titan be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Titan to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Titan to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Titan presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Titan has been observed to be tense, lip lick and hard stare towards handlers during interactions. It is important to always go slow and give Titan the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Titan would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: While on leash Titan has been observed to hard stare and pull hard towards dogs and people while on leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or squeakie sounds. Titan will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
