What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary (5):: 12/11/25: Jazzy is standing at the front with a soft body. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. A second handler tosses him a toy which he carries with him throughout the walk on the street. He will grab it drop it toss it then look at handler seeking treats. He will jump up, paws on chest accepting petting on the neck and shoulder. He is easily returned to kennel. 12/10/25: Jazzy J is at the front of his kennel with a soft body and wagging tail as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. Jazzy pulls hard during his walk, handler tosses a toy for Jazzy which he quickly accepts and begins shaking and playing with. He walks with handler outside and sees multiple dogs outside, each time he sees one he is tense and drops his toy, staring at them from afar. He pulls toward dogs in closer proximity and it is difficult to redirect him while he is reacting. During his walk, Jazzy pulls forward consistently throughout the walk and rarely slows down, he pulls frantically and unexpectedly toward birds, bikes, people and dogs he sees. When he fixates on something he will pull while standing on his hind legs. He is walked for a while more and stops briefly to relieve himself, he is then returned to kennel without further issue. 12/8/25: (MID DAY WALK) Jazzy J is at the back of the kennel with a soft body and a fast wagging helicopter tail. He jumps up to the front of the kennel pawing at the door. Jazzy is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. As he is walked down the aisle and down the hall, Jazzy begins to leash bite. He jumps towards the handler and grabs the leash. Jazzy is walked out to the street where he continues to jump up and pushes off the handler. Handler straight arms him a few times. Treats are tossed and he is redirected with ease. Jazzy pulls mild to moderately on the leash and when Jazzy turns to the handler treats are tossed to redirect him. This is successful throughout the walk. Jazzy J spots pigeons and birds on the ground and flying around. He will crouch down and pulls hard towards the birds and chase birds that fly over head. Jazzy relieves himself. He will sit on command and when given treats he takes them with a firm mouth. Jazzy is walked back to the shelter and is given a toy. He grabs the toy and carries it back to his kennel. He is returned without issue.
Summary (6):: 12/7/25: Jazzy J is lying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to come forward and is able to be leashed with ease. He then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk while jumping on his hind legs. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead on his hind legs . He would jump up high on the handler and is able to sit for treats. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump up on the handlers and is able to be redirected with treats. He would jump up on the handler as they were siting down and took treats roughly from their hand. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 12/8/25: It was noted on the whiteboard that Jazzy J is leash biting a lot. He would nip at the handler's hands for treat. Staff stated that he would nip their hands and when a treat was not received he would begin leash biting. 12/7/25: Staff reported that Jazzy J was leash biting at a high intensity outside. He tore off the handler's PPE. 12/03/25: Jazzy J is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he accepts a treat before being leashed and is walked out of the kennel room where he pulls hard toward dogs he passes. Jazzy attempts to pull toward people he passes while walking and is somewhat frantic while he walks. He pulls moderately and will continuously attempt to approach people or dogs he sees on his walk and at one point jumps on someone passing by as handler exits the building.. Jazzy accepts treats quickly from handler but is hard to redirect or get the attention. Jazzy relieves After walking for a while Jazzy is brought back inside where he follows a treat back into kennel and returns without further issue. 11/29/25: Jazzy J is sitting down in his kennel and when handler approaches he slowly stands and walks to front of kennel door with a low wagging tail. Handler speaks to Jazzy J in a baby voice repeating 'good boy' to which he then presses his shoulder to the kennel door. Handler scratches at Jazzy J's shoulder briefly and then stops. Jazzy J then softly paws at kennel door and leans in again, so handler scratches shoulder again. Jazzy J periodically sniffs handlers fingers and licks hand. Throughout the interaction Jazzy J has a neutral body and periodically slowly wags tail. Jazzy J begins eating kibble in tray in kennel and the interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 11/27/25: Jazzy J is at the front of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is offered treats but does not accept any and stands as handler unlocks the kennel door, allowing leashing and walking out of kennel and out to the street. Outside Jazzy walks slowly and frequently stops if he hears a noise, sees a person or bike or sees/hears dogs. He will stop and stare at the stimuli from afar or stare at people passing by while becoming tense as they pass. Whenever Jazzy stops handler waits a while before using slight leash pressure to coax him forward. Halfway through the walk Jazzy begins to baulk slightly but after waiting for a bit with handler and using mild leash pressure he continues. He stops occasionally to sniff spots on the street as well or to relieve himself and after walking for a while is brought back inside. Jazzy allows handler to clip his leash and returns to kennel without issue. 11/26/25: Jazzy J is laying at the side of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but does not accept any, a squeaker is also employed to coax Jazzy forward but it is unsuccessful. Jazzy remains seated staring intently at handler, as handler unlocks the kennel door and introduces the leash to kennel Jazzy Stands and is tense. He avoids the leash multiple times before retreating to the back of kennel facing away from handler. Handler eventually uses a pole leash to reach further into kennel to leash Jazzy who still avoids the leash but is eventually leashed. Handler waits a bit at the side of the kennel for Jazzy to exit on his own, however he remains at the side of his kennel and begins lying down again, so handler uses very slight leash pressure to guide him out of kennel which is successful. He exits kennel and hesitantly walks down the hall and out to the street for his walk. Outside his body is more neutral and he is generally aloof, walking near handler and occasionally stopping when hearing noises or seeing people move. He will continue walking when called by handler and slight leash pressure is used. Jazzy relieves himself outside and walks with handler for a while before he is brought back inside. He is returned to kennel and a hook is used to slowly remove his leash from him which he avoids for a while before eventually allowing handler to remove.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jazzy J so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Jazzy J's fearful nature and need for contact on his own terms, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Jazzy has been obsvered to become tense and hover over the toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Jazzy's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Since arriving at the care centers, Jazzy J has been observed to be avoidant of handlers and has escalated to growling and bearing teeth toward handlers when particularly uncomfortable. It is important to move slowly with Jazzy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Jazzy to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Jazzy has been obsvered to hard stare towards dogs and people. Jazzy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: It is reported that Jazzy J will bite the leash intensely. He will jump up and push off the handlers body in an attempt to bite the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
