Animal Profile

Kittee

Hello, my name is Kittee. My animal id is #220843. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/22/2025.

Kittee is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kittee arrived at MACC as a stray with a limited history. Her finder states that she will hard bark, growl, and lunge towards dogs, small animals, and children. During her stay in the care center Kittee has been observed to present similar behaviors. She has been observed to lunge and vocalize towards animal and people. This behavior is able to be redirected using treats. Medically Kittee has diarrhea and is underweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

My medical notes are...

Weight: 34 lbs

Summary (6):: 3/22/24: Kittee is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down and whimpering. She is leashed with a treat lure. She pulls moderately out of the kennel. She is walked to the street where she passes several dogs in the driveway, she begins vocalizing loudly and pulling towards them. Handler keeps her away and she begins to stands up on her hind legs. Kittee hard stares at the dog when leaving the driveway and treats are tossed to redirect her. On the street, Kittee walks alongside the handler will mild pulling. She occasionally checks in for treats. Handler tries to see if Kittee knows "paw" or "shake". Kittee would nudge handler's hand and lean into pets and rubs along handler's legs. On the street, Kittee spotted a dog. She stopped and hard stared and vocal cues (whistling) was used to redirect her. Kittee was given a treat when she turned from the dog and as she was walked past. After sometime, Kittee was brought back to the shelter, when returning to kennel she stops and treats are tossed to encourage her inside. The leash is removed without issue. 3/20/25: Kittee is observed to hard bark, vocalize, and lunge towards people and dogs while walking through the hallway. Kittee pulls mildly and continues to vocalize throughout walking in the hallway. She is taken to the yard where she also vocalizes towards the helper dog. When returning to kennel she is easily reclipped and mildly pulls towards the other dog in the kennel room while vocalizing. Kitte readily reenters kennel. 2/25/25: Kittee was taken out for an adoption interaction. She is leashed easily, while taken out of the room she barks briefly at the kennels. During the interaction, she is at first tense, starting to pee. Afterwards, she starts to warm up and get loose and wiggly. She barks a few times at a staff member wearing a hat, and then one wearing a hood. On a walk, she barks once at another dog, before redirecting with treats. She stays towards staff member and member of the public's legs during the walk, redirecting well with a squeaky toy. She is led easily back into the building and into the kennel, she does not bark at the kennels at all on the way back. 2/23/25: Kittee is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with treats which she uses her teeth predominantly to take. She exits kennel and begins barking and pulling towards the dogs she passes. Summary:: Tense body and tucked tail

ENERGY LEVEL:: Kittee is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Kittee.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and mouthie behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Kittee's finder states that she will jump up on handlers often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Kittee's finder states that she will take treats with a hard mouth. During her assessment Kittee was observed to mouth handlers handler when seeking treats. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Kittee to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On Leash Reactivity: Kittee's finder states that she will hard bark, growl, and lunge towards dogs, small animals, and children. Kittee will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Kittee's finder states that she will pull very hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
