Little Prince
Hello, my name is Little Prince . My animal id is #258459. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/29/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - eviction.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLittle Prince is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner described him to be tolerant of strangers and have medium energy levels in the home. He has tolerated some handling in the care centers but has displayed fearful defensive aggression. During his medical intake exam he was tense, lunged, and snapped at handler with no warning. Additionally, when attempting to collar him during a handling assessment he began growling. In another handling situation, when attempting to leash Little Prince handler grabbed his collar to steady him and Little Prince redirect biting their wrist breaking skin. Medically, Little Prince is a senior dog with suspect KCS with possible vision impairment would benefit from further diagnostics.

Little Prince was surrendered into care due to his previous owner facing eviction. His previous family described him as an active dog who enjoyed spending most of his time in the living room. He enjoyed baths but would not let them trim his nails or touch his paws, is anxious during car rides, and likes playing with balls. He is noted to guard his toys, food, and treats if someone attempts to take them from him; he will growl and hard bark. Little Prince has only allowed minimal handling since intake. When attempting to collar him for his handling assessment, he began growling when approached. During his medical exam, he tensed, lunged, and snapped at medical staff without clear warning, prompting him to be sedated due to his behavior. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Little Prince be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope partner that can address his challenges with the use of a professional trainer/behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement methods only.

He has difficulty focusing on either. The handler works with him on the leave it cue and he is briefly able to leave a treat in a bowl, but does not show much interest in engaging. The handler then puts the bowl on the ground and works with Little Prince on walking past it. He disengages when cued with the "leave it" verbal cue. There some minimal specks of blood and the plush toys and they are removed. Handler moves on to briefly working the "leave it" cue. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Little Prince's rapid escalation into defensive aggression and his reported resource guarding in his previous home, we recommend an adult-only home. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Little Prince's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he goes to a home as a single pet and does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner:Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Little Prince's quick escalations towards handlers and only allowing for minimal handling, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Little Prince considers toys, food, and treats to be valuable. He will growl and bark hard if someone attempts to take them away. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Prince's possession without safely trading for an item of equal or greater value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: Little Prince is reported to not have allowed his previous family to trim his nails or touch his paws. It is important to avoid touching little Prince's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Little Prince to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on handling / touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Little Prince is reported to growl or bark when startled. When attempting to collar him during a handling assessment, he began growling. During his medical exam, Little Prince was reported to be tense before lunging and snapping at a Handler with little to no warning. Due to this, he was doubled and sedated as a safety precaution. Please see handout on fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (human): Staff was attempting to leash Little Prince. After 3rd attempt, staff member was bit on the right wrist.
