Bruno
Hello, my name is Bruno. My animal id is #269356. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/27/2026.
Bruno is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Bruno has shown high arousal and persistent leash biting, including repeatedly grabbing at the leash, lunging at the kennel door, and attempting to rush out when opened. He has also displayed significant dog-directed reactivity and hard pulling on walks, making him difficult for staff to manage. Bruno's leash biting has become increasingly difficult to redirect with treats, but has been reported to be social with staff but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Bruno is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.

Summary:: Bruno arrived as a stray, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown. 11/02/26 Bruno is introduced to a fake dog due to his escalations during previous greet. He immediately runs to the fake dog, will sniff it deeply, and position as if to mount. He does this several times as the handler moves the fake dog. Bruno is able to be called away multiple times but will very quickly turn back to the fake dog each time. Handler grabs his leash and guides him away. 10/31/26: Bruno greets a novel female dog through a barrier while she displays neutral body language and intermittently approaches to sniff. During the interaction, Bruno muzzle punches the gate with intensity, snarls, and remains fixated on the novel female. The female responds by independently disengaging and walking away. Due to Bruno's escalating behavior and continued fixation, the interaction is ended.
Summary (6):: 11/5/26: Per ACS staff, Bruno displayed intense leash biting during both AM and midday walks, with his behavior escalating during the midday attempt. Staff reported that Bruno repeatedly attempted to grab the leash whenever it entered his kennel, making regular leashing difficult due to the risk of contact with the handler's hand. During the AM walk, Staff used an overhead loop to leash Bruno. Once outside, Bruno reportedly pulled heavily and displayed dog-reactive behavior. During midday walks, Bruno lunged more intensely at the kennel door and continued attempting to bite the leash. Staff attempted to redirect him with treats, which Bruno quickly ate before returning to leash biting. A second overhead loop and assistance from another ACS were needed to safely remove him from the kennel. Staff have also reported that Bruno attempts to rush out of his kennel when the door is opened. 11/2: Staff report that Bruno was difficult to manage on his walk due to his leash pulling while reacting to other dogs. 11/02/26 (Trainer Note): Bruno was lying on his bed as the handler approached. He was easily leashed and pull strongly the short distance to the training room, pulling towards the kennels in B2. When inside the training room, Bruno will be clipped to a drag leash and he will pace around the room, panting and occasionally sniffing. Whenever there is a noise outside of the door, Bruno will run up to it and fixate on the door with a tense body and a high flagging tail. The handler attempts to engage Bruno in some marker training, but he will not take treats. The handler gets some cheese and Bruno will eat the cheese, but will continuously fixate at the door whenever there is a noise. The handler is able to get Bruno engage in some up/down game, delivering treats into a snuffle mat. Bruno will at first be marked for looking up from the snuffle mat, but will gradually be able to look at the handler, to be marked and rewarded. Bruno is re leashed and pulls strongly back to kennel. He stops briefly at the door, but will follow a treat trail in.
Summary (7):: 11/01/26(PG Note): Bruno is standing at the front of his kennel and will allow the handler to leash him with ease. He will then be brought to the play yard to meet a fake dog. Once inside the yard, a drag leash will be placed on him before he is allowed to move freely around the yard to greet the fake playmate. Bruno will immediately run up to the fake dog, circling it while wagging his tail. He will climb over the fake dog while sniffing and will begin mounting, displaying heightened levels of sexual motivated behavior. He will then be brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog to Dog Assessment. 11/01/26: Staff report that Bruno is showing intense barrier frustration when they attempt to leash him and will jump up onto the kennel door. -DW Later on in the day, another staff member reported that he is slamming his head into the kennel door. 10/31/26: Bruno is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease, and he then pulls hard on the way outside to the play yard for playgroup. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and begins to hard bark and snarl towards the other dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 10/30/26: ACS reports that Bruno repeatedly tries to push out of the kennel while leashing. Another ACS leashes him while he is fed treats, though he still attempts to push out of kennel in the process. 10/29/26 (Assessment): Bruno was jumping on kennel door as handler approached. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel for his behavior assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). Coming out of kennel Bruno pulled very hard, and kept up that intensity all the way to the behavior room. After his assessment he was returned to his kennel, going into kennel he stopped and refused to continue. Handler had to use leash pressure to get him back inside.
Date of intake:: 10/27/2026
Summary:: Friendly, whined and pulled on being walked back, thrashed a little on being moved away from dog
Date of initial:: 10/28/2026
Summary:: Initially solicits attn, high energy, whaled eye
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bruno so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Bruno's anxious behavior and reactivity, we recommend an adult only home for Bruno at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Bruno's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he goes home as a single pet and does not visit dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful | Handling/touch sensitivity: During his medical exam, Bruno showed signs of stress such as whale eye, and he had conflicted behavior during his handling assessment, fidgeting and jumping on handlers during direct handling. He has also shown some reluctance to go back to kennel, balking on being returned. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bruno should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be his choice to approach a new person or thing. Bruno may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her/his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period and Handling/Touch Sensitivity. Anxiety | Strength/Leash pulling: Bruno has shown anxious behavior at the care center, pacing and panting throughout his handling assessment and finding it difficult to settle or engage with handlers. He also pulls hard and whines when being walked on leash. If he displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Bruno has showed reactivity to dogs on leash, pulling towards them and barking on leash. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement-based training to teach him to look at you instead of other dogs. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
