Animal Profile

Chachi

Hello, my name is Chachi. My animal id is #218146. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/7/2025.

Chachi is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. He has shown strong leash pulling, lunging at other dogs, and kennel fighting. His responses to potential adopters have been inconsistent—while he has warmed up to some with time and treats, he has also exhibited hard barking and snapping when approached too quickly. Once comfortable, he is social with handlers, enjoys enrichment activities. Medically, Chachi is currently healthy.

A volunteer writes: Chachi, our sweet little fuzzy bear, is looking for his very own Joanie! Found running loose on the street, he was brought to the shelter by police and unfortunately no guardian has been found. Nervous when he arrived, Chachi was quickly warmed up. Today he greets people who come to his kennel with a loose and bouncy body. He joins you for a little adventure beyond his kennel walls happily, and solicits all the affection he can soak up. And while it's obvious, I feel the need to point out that he has just about the cutest little face and "smile" I've ever seen!! He runs enthusiastically into our arms and it's easy to imagine a wonderful life with this wonderful boy. Chachi met 2 dogs at the shelter, both with a soft frame. He toe-tapped and wagged and offered play bows to one dog who remained aloof to him, and was wiggly with the second but grew frustrated through the gate. Chachi's at Queens ACC. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Chachi entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 3/22/25: Chachi is reported to kennel fight leaving her kennel, and displaying high signs of stress before entering the pens. Chachi when greeting a male dog begins to pull hard, hard bark and vocalize at the male with a stiff body before being returned back to kennel due to her anxiety/arousal. 03/19/25 Chachi is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Chachi attempts to greet the novel male dog, but they cannot focus, running circles in their pen as Chachi remains self-present. Chachi will offer bounces attempting to solicit attention, however the novel male dog doesn't pick up on social cues nor stops to engage with Chachi. The novel male dog is returned to kennel. Chachi is introduced to another novel male dog while at the gate, off leash. Chachi remains soft and wiggly as the novel male dog hard barks at him. Chachi will bounce back and forth as the novel male dog tracks him. The novel male dog will snap at the gate and Chachi is moved away as he doesn't pick up on social cues. Both dogs are returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 02/12/25: When off leash at the Care Center Chachi is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Chachi approaches with a loose and wiggly frame. Chachi scents the novel male and begins whining as he climbs the gate. Chachi climbs off and begins offering prey bows. Growing in frustration Chachi begins demand barking and muzzle punching the gate. Due to Chachis frustration a face to face greet was not conducted. 02/05/25 Chachi is introduced to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Chachi greets the greeter dog approaching the gate with a soft frame and scenting her. Chachi toe-taps while wagging his tail, offering bounces and play bows as the greeter remains aloof. Chachi is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (4)::

Summary (5):: 03/29/25: Chachi is standing in his kennel upon the handler’s arrival and will be leashed with ease. He is brought to the assessment room for enrichment, where a drag leash is placed on him, allowing him to roam freely. The handler offers Chachi a Twist’d Chew bone, which he eagerly engages with and quickly devours. Once finished, the handler provides a peanut butter-filled rawhide, which he also enjoys. After her enrichment session, Chachi is brought back to her kennel safely with no issues.

Summary (6):: 03/22/25: Chachi is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He allows handler to clip his collar and readily exits kennel. Once out of kennel, Chachi pulls hard, darting back and forth, lunging towards the kennels on his way out, becoming tense bodied. Handler has to shorten their lead to keep him close and he will bunny hop as he continues to pull toward kennels. Once out of the building, Chachi maintains a tense frame and will pull hard towards dogs on lead. He pants heavily and does not settle throughout his time in the yard. After his session, Chachi is returned to kennel safely. 03/15/25: Chachi will initially avoid having his collar clipped as the handler attempts to leash him. However, he will eventually allow it and be brought outside for an enrichment walk. While outside, Chachi will pull hard on the leash as he walks with the handler. He will actively explore his environment, sniffing various scents as he passes by the trees. Chachi will pass other dogs but display no reaction. As the walk progresses, he will begin panting heavily and pull back toward the care center. After the walk, he will be safely returned to his kennel without any issues. 3/7: During the interaction, before the staff member even brought Chachi into the pen he was hard barking at the potential adopter who was inside the pen. In the pen he was hard barking and pulling toward them. The handler started walking Chachi around the pen to create distance with the potential adopter and the handler tried to redirect with treats. Chachi took the treats from the handler and so the handler gave the potential adopter treats to offer him and Chachi was hard barking and went to snap at their fingers when they offered them. The staff member ended the interaction. Chachi had done similar hard barking behaviors yesterday with the mother and adult grandson but was able to warm up to them with treats and giving him some time to get used to their presence in the pen but today the treats did not work. 02/23/25: Chachi is staying at the front of her kennel and will initially avoid the leash as the handler attempts to place it over her head. The handler offers hand treats, which she takes, allowing her to be leashed at the same time. Chachi is brought to the live room for enrichment, where a drag leash is placed on her, and she is set free to roam. She initially gravitates toward the snuffle mat, eagerly eating all the hidden treats inside. Once finished, she moves on to the lick mat filled with cheese, which she devours in about five seconds. Finally, she engages with the pupsicle toy, focusing on retrieving the treat ball inside. This toy holds her attention the longest as she works to get the treat out. Chachi remains engaged with the pupsicle until it is time for her to be escorted back to her kennel. She is returned safely with no issues.

Summary (7):: 2/12/25: Chachi greeted handler at front of kennel with a loose, bouncy frame. He was dodging leash so handler crouched down and used a treat to guide his head through leash loop. Chachi remained loose and bouncy on the way to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) He was returned to kennel room where handler was able to switch out his bedding while holding him on leash. He gave some resistance reentering kennel but was easily lured in using treats. 2/2/25: Chachi greeted handler at front of kennel but shied away from leash. Handler used a treat to slowly lure Chachi's head through leash loop and they walked to the BA room. Chachi was clipped to a drag leash and explored the room. He engaged with LATTE puzzles set out for him including a cheese lick mat. Chachi was social with handlers and engaged in a pattern game. He was returned to kennel with ease. 01/26/25: Chachi is standing with a soft frame on his kuranda bed as handler approaches. He comes forward as they toss treats but shows hesitance with being leashed. Chachi is lured into the lead with treats and readily exits kennel, walking with a loose frame to the Canine Behavior Office. Chachi is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He engages with a snuffle mat and will approach handlers to solicit more treats. Handler engages in a treat toss game with Chachi that lasts several minutes. He will place his front paws up on handler's lap to solicit petting. Handler tosses a soft toy but he shows no interest. After his session, Chachi is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely. -DW 01/17/25: Chachi comes to the front of the kennel with a soft body as the handler approaches, but backs away from the rope. Handler uses treats to lure her through the leash and she pulls mildly to the canine live room. Chachi allows the handler to attach a drag leash and explores the space with a neutral body. She shows some interest in the enrichment items, engaging for a few moments at a time. Chachi approaches the handler to solicit contact and leans in when the handler scratches her neck. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 1/13/25: Chachi was nervous of being leashed on lead and would keep backing up in her kennel. Once leashed, she was able to be taken to the behavior room for her assessment. She would approach all the handlers for treats and would do a few sits for them. Please behavior assessment notes for more details. She was able to be taken back to her kennel with no issues

Summary:: low tail, nervous but accepted treats, started to thrash, muzzled

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Chachi's level of fearfulenss and handling sensitivity, we recommend an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Chachi has shown discomfort when attempting to leash him to remove him from his kennel and has escalated to hard barking and snapping at strangers during adoption interactions. During his medical exam, he also began thrashing. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Chachi should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Chachi. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Chachi's quality of life On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Chachi is reported to kennel fight when coming out of his kennel and pull towards dogs on walks.
