Animal Profile

Roxy

Hello, my name is Roxy. My animal id is #226855. I am a female white dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/14/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not good with resident animals.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Roxy is at risk for behavior reasons. She was in an altercation in her previous home over resources. Roxy incurred a bite to her head, then escalated to biting, holding and shaking. In care she was initially fearful but has warmed up nicely being sweet and social with staff and volunteers. Medically she has recently been vomiting but is otherwise healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Roxy is at risk for behavior reasons. She was in an altercation in her previous home over resources. Roxy incurred a bite to her head, then escalated to biting, holding and shaking. In care she was initially fearful but has warmed up nicely, being sweet and social with staff and volunteers. Medically, she has recently been vomiting but is otherwise healthy. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Roxy is a shy, reserved dog who has shown a quiet and gentle nature during her time in our care center. While she can be affectionate once she feels comfortable, she prefers a calm and predictable environment where she can settle in at her own pace. Roxy has a history of resource guarding, particularly around high-value items such as food or toys. This behavior has led to 2 bite incidents involving the other resident dog. Because of this, Roxy must be the only pet in the household. She should also be left alone when she is engaged with items she values to avoid triggering guarding behavior. She would do best with an experienced adopter who understands canine body language and is willing to manage her environment to ensure everyone's safety. Roxy is not a good fit for homes with other animals or children.

Summary (7):: 6/10: Roxy had a soft body and was easily leashed. While walking in the hallway, she noticed a family staff member and immediately became wiggly and approached them with a soft body. She leaned into their legs and accepted pets on her head and back. When they would stop petting her, she jumped on their leg, leaning her head into their hand. After a few minutes of pets, Roxy was taken to the yard and put on a drag leash. She wandered around exploring and would approach staff members from time to time for pets. After the session was done, she was easily leashed and walked back to the kennel with a soft body 6/8: Roxy was in the yard with 2 volunteers. She has a loose body, running about, engaging in play. She takes treats gently and leans into pets. She explores on her own, relieving herself before returning for pets.   06.03 Roxy is at the front of her kennel with a wagging tail. She is easily leashed and brought on a walk. Roxy stays close to staff as she explores and sniffs, walking nicely. She is then brought to the yard where she gets the "zoomies," running back and forth. Roxy returns to staff and accepts pets with a loose body. When bringing her back to her kennel, Roxy greets multiple staff members, accepting pets and praise. She is given treats and she lays in her bed when back in her kennel. 05.28 Roxy is laying in her bed as staff approach the kennel. As the kennel door is opened and the leash is introduced, Roxy gets up from where she is laying. Her head hangs low and her tail wags as she is leashed. When in the yard, a drag leash is placed on her. She follows staff around the yard. The staff member sits down on the bench and Roxy hops up, sitting next to them. Roxy is given pets on her back and chest. She leans into staff as she is being pet. When they stop petting her, she nudges their hand with her head before resting her head on them. Roxy is given more pets before it is time to go inside. She is easily leashed and returns to her kennel. 5/16 As staff approached kennel Roxy was sitting in the middle. Her head lowered down , as well as her body. While trying to rope her she backed away. Staff tried again and was able to rope her and bring her outside. Roxy was brought to the yard , allowing staff member to put a drag leash on her. She began to walk around the entire yard sniffing around. Staff offered treats their hand, Roxy sniffed them and walked away. Staff member then tried calling her over, she came and began sniffing their hand. Roxy did allow pets on top of her head and body. She was then brought back inside and put inside her kennel with ease.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to the bite history and reported potential to resource guard we recommend an adult only home for Roxy. SINGLE PET HOME Roxy lived with 2 other dogs. She was involved in 2 bite incidents over resources. We recommend she be the only dog in the home to prevent another incident. RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS Because Roxy has escalated to biting over resources, she should not visit the dog park. PLACE WITH A NEW HOPE PARTNER Roxy has appeared fearful in the shelter and has had a concerning bite incident to another dog in her previous home. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: RESOURCE GUARDING Roxy's previous owner notes that he may become tense when her food bowl, treats, toys or other objects are approached. We recommend that Roxy be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Roxy's mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on resource guarding. FEARFUL Roxy is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Pam the option to walk away from any social interaction. Roxy should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Roxy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Roxy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. please see handout on fearfulness. MULTIPLE BITE HISTORY (DOG) In the previous home Roxy had at least 2 different incidents that resulted in her biting the other female large mixed breed dog in the home, both of which seem to have stared out as resource guarding. Please see handout on bite history.
