Sasha
Hello, my name is Sasha. My animal id is #222083. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 7 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/5/2026.
Sasha is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further bite/scratch incidents.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Upon intake, limited handling was done due to DOH status so Sasha was transferred to den from the crate. She easily walked into the den without issue. Before transferring, she allowed staff to scan for MC without issue.
KNOWN HISTORY:: 9/13/26 Previous owner was entering the back room of the apartment when Sasha followed her; he tripped and fell, startling Sasha. Sasha then began to attack without stopping. Someone in the home was able to stop Sasha by pouring water on her. Sasha then ran into another room and the door was closed to stop Sasha from coming back. Upon intake, limited handling was done due to DOH status so Sasha was transferred to den from the crate. She easily walked into the den without issue. Before transferring, she allowed staff to scan for MC without issue. ----------------------------- Sasha was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. On 3/9/25 around 10:40 PM, Officers brought in DSH Sasha. Officers stated that the owner called requesting them to pick up as he was being aggressive towards family members. While no bite/scratch incidents were reported in the home, an officer was bitten while attempting to secure the cat. Officers stated that he had grabbed the cat's scruff and picked her up. Sasha began spitting and yowling, as well as clawing at the officer's arm (did not break skin due to his sleeves). Officer was able to transfer the cat into a small carrier, but in the process was bitten on the left hand, leaving four distinct puncture wounds and drawing blood. EMS later arrived at the PCT and cleaned and bandaged the wound. Upon arrival, Sasha was sitting in the carrier with dilated pupils and a wide stance, the hair along their tail and spine was pilo-erect. Sasha was transferred into a feral den without issue.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/11/26 FB58 Sitting on top of her den with a neutral and curious look on her face, ears forward, and tail loose. I offer her some catnip toys and she is very interested, moving over to sniff them where they land. She allows pets with the scratcher tool along her head and back, as well as with the assessor's hand. She seems to be slightly tense and wary or alert after pets. 9//17/26 FB79 At the front of the kennel, Sasha is rolling around looking at the lights and when i opened the cubby door to toss in some treats she leaned forward to sniff and almost head bunt. my hand but pulled away when i tried to pet. She kept a relaxed body and tossed around the catnip toy that i placed in there for her. 9/27/26 FB79 Sasha is at the top of her den watching the light show i set up and when i bent down to greet her she chirped with wide eyes and forward ears. I opened the kennel door and she jumped down with her tail high and a arched back followed by her lowering her head when i offered my hand. I attempted to pet but she flinched back so i brought the tool in giving her a chance to sniff it where i then was able to briefly pet the top of her head with no issues. 9/29/26 FB25 Sasha was sleeping inside her den upon approach and was not very interested in coming out today. She watched me with a calm, curious expression and ate some of the treats I placed inside the den with her. I also brought her some new toys and talked softly to her for a bit. 10/05/26 FB47 Sasha is in her flip bed as I approach. Her face and body are loose. I offer her my hand, which she sniffs and headbunts gently. She accepts head and neck pets rolling around in her bed. Although enjoying the interaction, she will occasionally freeze and look past me in the room (one of the cats is loudly having in kennel zoomies). She is fearful of the loud noises. She accepts full body pets with the scratcher tool. She trunks herself so the scratcher tool is now being used on her neck which she leans into deeply. 10/7/26 FB25 Sweetie girl! Sitting at the front of her kennel, she solicits petting when I open the kennel door. She rubs herself on my arm and along the kennel walls, her tail high and swaying just slightly. She looks around the room with an alert expression, sometimes tensing, though remains calm and affectionate when her attention is on me. I leave her with extra treats and a few new toys. 10/12/26 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, body and face relaxed with her ears forward, her tail curled lightly around her body and her head resting on her linens. She stands up to greet me as the kennel door opens and she tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool while leaning in gently and remaining otherwise tense and focused on the room with dilated pupils. She ignores the treats and catnip toy offered (for now). 10/15/26 FB79 Sasha stepped into the mai part of the kennel from her cubby & chirped repeatedly when i approached; she stretched & stood w a high tail GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Curious,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: She was reported to have behavior challenges in the previous home but limited details were provided. She has a bite/scratch history; however, it was due to an inappropriate handling technique (see Known History above for more details). Sasha was tolerant of handling during the behavior assessment when properly and safely picked up with fear free techniques. Sasha has shown some signs of potential overstimulation/high arousal. She has remained calm and social with no incidents, and it is possible this is due to having pent up energy from staying in a kennel at the care center, however it is also possible she has a level of touch sensitivity. Adopters should be counseled on feline body language, signs of potential overstimulation and the importance of giving her a break from contact when needed.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to fearfulness and bite/scratch history. Counselor discretion is advised. 9//13/26 Adult only home due to incidents in previous home. SEE 'KNOWN HISTORY' ABOVE FOR DETAILS.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sasha is a shy, calm, and timid cat. She was hiding in the den with her head poking out of the side door, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, she walks out of the den to sniff treats offered by hand, then walks to the right side kennel. She hovers over the front entrance to curiously scan the environment out of the door window and tolerates petting on the head, cheeks, and body but does not engage with the attention. During pick up, she is calm and a little tense, rests her front limbs on the assessor's arm, and allows petting all over when held for 5 seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to look out of her kennel and tolerates more petting and attention. 9/13/26 Laying at the side of her den, Sarah is perched with her paws tucked and her body neutral; she had no reaction when the assessor spoke to her through the glass. However when the kennel door was open she sat up with her paw lifted as she watched closely for any movement. When the tool was brought in her ear tilted as it was held in front of her and when contact was attempted she lifted her paw higher and slightly backed away. Sarah remained still with no further reaction as the assessor spoke softly to her and when treats were placed down in front of her she leaned in to sniff but had no interest in trying. Sarah slow blinked when the assessor moved away and settled down, lowered her paw and started to look around the kennel/room with curious eyes. After a few moments the assessor attempted contact once again but Sarah pulled back once again and arched her back as she lifted her paw. Contact and pick up were not attempted again at this time. 10/13/26 Upon approach, Sarah is on the top ledge. She comes forward quickly, her pupils dilated and her tail high and swishing slightly. She leans into petting on her head, however he body remains tense and she continues to fix her gaze on the assessor's hand. A tool is used to pet along her body, and while she tolerates all touch, her tail continues to swish with more force. She accepts some treats and comes down to the main kennel. She allows petting all over her body, then swats at the assessor with a soft paw, so assessment is ended with no pick up. She slow blinks and meows softly at the assessor through the kennel. Sasha tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
