Animal Profile

Cupid

Hello, my name is Cupid. My animal id is #216883. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/17/2024.

Cupid is at risk due to behavior concerns. Cupid is a highly social dog with a low threshold for arousal. In the Care Centers, Cupid has been observed biting staff leashes and jumping up high. He can briefly be refocused with treats but remains aroused, often grabbing the leashes once he finishes eating them. At times, Cupid will mouth staff's arms when he can't reach a leash. When calm, Cupid is social and enjoys playing with toys. Medically, he has dental disease and dermatitis.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Cupid had a relaxed body and wagging tail when I approached. Allowed me to pet with no issue. When I tried to scan he started to dodge the scanner but ultimately allowed when I was petting him. Did not collar due to amount of activity at MACC. Brought immediately to med intakes.

Summary (5):: 2/24/25- Cupid is at the front of his pop up crate with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash next to handler sniffing various spots, handler calls to him and he comes to them. He gently takes treats from their hand when he check ins with handler. He has a slight pull walking ahead of handler to get to spots to sniff but then will go back to loose leash. When handler was walking to the park, Cupid starts to bite at the leash, jumping up. Handler presents a treat, he takes it then goes back to biting at the leash. Handler tosses treats on the ground, Cupid will eat them and go back to leash biting while jumping. While waiting for a light to change handler has Cupid sit and they feed him treats. Once the light changes to cross, Cupid and handler continue walking, he stops biting at the leash. He walks on a loose leash again while sniffing. A man jogs by Cupid and handler has Cupid sit by the curb while feeing treats Cupid keeps focus on handler. He sniffs around the park and continues to check in with handler. Cupid passes 2 dogs and looks at them without moving forward with no vocalization. Handler presents a treat in front of Cupid and he directs his attention to handler and follows them. He allows handler to pet his head, chin, neck and back, he leans into handler's legs when they pet his side. He returns to the building with no issue and is easily clipped. He is returned to his pop up crate without issue.

Summary (6):: 1/26/25- Cupid was laying down in his pop up crate with a soft body, he comes to the front and is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk. Once the handler is on the side walk, Cupid starts to excessively leash bite jumping high. Handler tosses a treat and Cupid eats it quickly then returns to leash biting. Handler moves to the curb to let MOP pass as Cupid continuously leash bites, again only pausing to eat treats. Handler decides to take Cupid to the play yard, he leash bites all the way back in and once in the building he stops. He is taken to a pen and placed on a drag leash. He runs around the pen, sniffing around. He then comes to handler that is sitting on the bench and seeks pets. He goes belly up and allows handler to pet his belly. He gets up then and grabs toy, he brings the toy to the handler's lap while playing with it. Handler pets his side and he leans his body into their legs. He then goes belly up again with the toy in his mouth. When a pigeon lands in the pen, he chases it then returns to handler engaging with them. He gently takes treats from their hand and allows more petting all over. When handler presents the leash to releash Cupid starts to bite at the leash and pulling it. Handler tosses treats and he eats them, he again tries to bite the leash. Handler holds a treat and as Cupid goes to eat it, handler was able to leash. He again starts to bite at the leash, jumping high. Once back in the building Cupid stops leash biting. He goes back into his crate without issue. 1/18/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Cupid attempted to leash bite once then stopped. 1/8/25: It was reported by a staff member that while out with a volunteer, Cupid was leash biting intensely, tugging it and walking backwards while pulling. Treat and toys did not work to redirect him. 1/2/25: Cupid is laying at the back of his pop-up crate as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and exits kennel calmly. He walks with a fast wagging tail and accepts some treats tossed to him while waiting for the elevator. Cupid is taken on the street for his walk, during which he pulls moderately and walks slightly in front of handler. He continues to accept treats tossed to him and walks past people on the street without issue. When spotting other dogs during his walk he will pull towards them with moderate pressure but is easily redirected. Cupid is walked for a while before being brought back to the building where he is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 12/30/24- Cupid was at the front of his pop up crate with a loose and wiggly body, he was easily leashed and taken to the play yard. He was placed on a drag leash, he explored the pen sniffing around. Handler went to sit on the bench, he came over and his body onto top of handler. Handler petted him all over and he leans into handler's body. When handler's hands were by his face, he started to get mouthy. Handler took their hands away and just petted him some more. When a pigeon landed in the pen, Cupid jumped down and chased it. When the pigeon flew away, Cupid came back into the bench where the handler sat again laying on top of them. He accepted more petting and he was given treats, which he gently took from the handler. He was easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue. 12/21/24: Cupid is in a pop up crate in the behavior room. He is extremely wiggly with wagging tail, whining. Handler lets him out of the crate and he jumps up exuberantly, moving his head side to side with open mouth towards handlers arms. Handler tries to leash him but he grabs the leash, gently tugs then prances around the room with it in his mouth. A leash is placed on him and he is taken for a walk on the street. He is neutral bodied, does not react to people or dogs passing and does not pull on leash. Back in the behavior room, he becomes exuberant again but is distracted from jumping up and mouthing with treats and a toy. As handlers mill around, he settles, playing with a toy, or laying on the floor as handlers work. He is returned to his crate using treats as a lure. 12/19/24: Cupid is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and taken to the street for his walk. While walking, Cupid displays a high flagged tail and pulls moderately when exiting the building. Once outside his pulling slows significantly to much lighter pressure when pulling. He walks past people on the street without issue and will stop to sniff or use the bathroom occasionally. He is brought back inside after a bit for his assessment. Once inside he approaches handlers with a fast wagging tail, before switching back to a high flagging and still tail. He initially does not accept treats but takes the third kind offered to him after a bit. He allows collaring and petting but begins leash biting when attempting to jog with him or re-leash him. He is brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

Date of initial:: 12/17/2024

Summary:: Tense body for exam. Did not eat treats.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cupid so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to leash biting we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Low Threshold arousal/ Leash Biting: Cupid has been observed to quickly become over aroused and begin to jump up high and bite the leash. When using treats Cupid will briefly stop to eat the treat and then continue leash biting. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
