Animal Profile

Yan Yan

Hello, my name is Yan Yan. My animal id is #266048. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/21/2026, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Yan Yan is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Yan Yan has moderate dental disease.

I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/4/26 FB79 At the front of the kennel, Yan Yan watched as i walked in and out the room a few times and had a neutral body with his paws tucked, tail not visible and his ears forward. However when i approached him to enter the kennel he quickly entered the den where he then sat with an arched back and wrapped tail when i lifted the den cover. He had no reaction as i spoke and continued to watch as i placed a toy and some snacks for him and i did not push contact. Later on i saw him quickly enjoying his snack. 10/7/26 FB58 He is standing on top of his den with a mostly tense face and body. As I approach, he doesn't take kindly to me popping some catnip toys in his cage through the cubby, hissing harshly. I then slide a tray of squeeze up onto the shelf through the food slot, and once it's closed, he comes up and begins to eat. I stand and mark him eating with a click. 10/10/26 FB47 Yan Yan is in his den as I approach. When I open the kennel door and greet he slowly emerges. He hisses, he does this funny tongue curl whenever he hisses and almost gets tongue tied. His face is tense with pulled back whiskers, flattened ears, and narrowed eyes. His body is tense and low to the base, his fur stands on end along his spine and back. I slowly put some treats in and close the kennel door taking a seat in front and talk to him quietly. He eyes me and the treats curiously. He slowly comes forward and eats his treats eyeing me cautiously the whole time. 10/19/26 FB47 Yan Yan is in his litter cubby as I approach the kennel. He has recently moved to a different room and has a better view of other cats now which I think he enjoys. He spends less time in his den now. When I open the door and greet, his face tenses and he gives a big hiss. I approach slowly with the scratcher tool, he does not move away and sniffs at it. I Approach with the tool, he tolerates some light touch before moving away. I offer him a treat tray and we once again practice light touch with the tool. We end the interaction by having some play time with the laser toy.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Playful,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Yan Yan is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while being noted to have presented as tolerant and friendly with his people, he has been wary and avoidant of human contact in the shelter. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Yan Yan would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/24/26 ON approach, Yan Yan is sitting hunched low with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted flat to the side, and is hissing harshly. He watches the assessor begin to open the cage door as he remains at the back, sticking his tongue out fully before hissing hard and beginning to low growl, tail tucking under his body. As the assessor slowly introduces the scratcher tool, he remains tense and low as he stares hard at the assessor and continues to hiss and low growl. Some petting and contact is able to be made on his head and shoulder, as he tenses and presses against the back wall, and continues to hard start at the assessor. They slowly begin to remove the tool and Yan Yan tenses and lunges quickly at the front of the cage, swatting the tool and hissing as he does so. No further contact or interaction is made and pick up is not attempted as Yan Yan continues to hiss and low growl as he stares at the assessor. 10/24/26 Upon approach Yan Yan is sitting in the middle of his kennel playing with a toy. His face and body are relaxed. The assessor opens the kennel door and greets, he tenses. Slowly Yan Yan approaches the front of the kennel sniffing in the direction of the assessor. The assessor slowly approaches him using a scratcher tool. He sniffs at it and hisses. Yan Yan tolerates light touch on his neck briefly before smalling the tool again, hissing, and backing away from the front of the kennel. When the assessor attempts to touch his torso with the tool, Yan Yan once again hisses and retreats from the assessor onto the ledge of his kennel. He growls quietly. The assessor ends the interaction, pickup is not attempted. Yan Yan is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.
