Nuggy
Hello, my name is Nuggy. My animal id is #212804. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/21/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormNuggy is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Nuggy does have a bite history due to an altercation with another dog although further details about the incident are unknown. The bite did break the skin and draw blood. While in care, Nuggy has been easy to leash, accepting of treats, with a neutral-soft body, although he solicited attention on occasion, Nuggy also did show discomfort when being collared- whale-eyed with a tense body when being fitted with a collar. He also has escalated to growling at a handler who blocked his exit after escaping his kennel. Medically, Nuggy has dermatitis and wounds.

Nuggy arrived at the QACC following a bite incident with another good Samaritans dog when Nuggy was loose on the street, and attacked the other dog. Nuggy in care has been fearful despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, and has escalated to growling at handlers at times when interacting with him. Nuggy remains tense during interactions but will open up to select handlers offering small tail wags and anxious in kennel as well. As a a result, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Parnters. A volunteer writes: Nuggy 🤍 his face is covered in scars, remnants of a recent fight. The details of that fight are unknown to us, but for now let's think about his future. Healing day by day, Nuggy has not found shelter life to his liking. It's hard to blame him, but the result of his distress is that he needs to be placed out of the shelter immediately. When I meet him I'm taken by how adorable he is, in spite of a face full of wounds, all I can see are sweet eyes and big triangle ears framing his face. Nuggy has a few pounds to gain and he's working on it. He laps up peanut butter with gusto, and eagerly takes treats.

Summary (6):: 11/22/24: Nuggy is observed to scream loudly at the front of his kennel and bark incessantly when the handler is passing the kennel room. 11/18/24: Nuggy is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office for Assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Nuggy displays a high level of energy as he enters room and jumps up on handler and furniture. He is highly treat motivated and takes treats roughly from hand. He allows handlers to switch out his collar with a loose frame. After his session, Nuggy is returned to kennel safely. 11/18/24: Nuggy is observed to scream and screech continuously while in kennel. Later on at night, when the rooms are quiet, Nuggy can still be heard screeching in his kennel. 11/12/24: Nuggy is standing at the front of kennel with neutral body as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. He readily engages with multiple enrichment items including a snuffle mat and licky mat. He is loose and social with multiple handlers throughout his time in the room. After his session, Nuggy is walked back to kennel, returning safely. 11/06/24 Nuggy is lying down as the handler approaches the kennel. Nuggy is easily leashed as he remains lying down, rising as he is leashed, and they proceed outside to the play yard. Nuggy is under the weather seemingly sluggish and almost lethargic, displaying a soft frame as he slowly exits the building with a slightly hunched back. Nuggy is enters the playpen and defecates for a little while. Nuggy will make minimal movement slowly creeping around the pen. Nuggy is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel slowly. 11/02/24: Nuggy standing at the front of his kennel and will display a neutral frame as handler leashes him, Nuggy will be brought to the BT room for a handling assessment and will be dress with a collar and a drag leash, while handler is doing so Nuggy body will tense and he will whale eye but without escalating. Nuggy will remain very anxious but will take treats from handler when being redirected from jumping up. Nuggy will be brought back to his kennel safely.
Summary (7):: 10/30/24: Nuggy greets the handler standing on his kennel door as the handler approaches. Nuggy is easily leashed and escorted out of the care center for walks. When on leash Nuggy attempts once to jump on the handler to solicit attention after frequently checking in. The handler just guides Nuggy down with the leash and he continues to walk beside the handler. When passing other dogs sometimes Nuggy will pull towards their direction. Nuggy will spend most of his time out side exploring his environment and sometimes scenting. Nuggy is escorted back to the care center and unleashed without any issues. As the handler exits Nuggy begins whining and standing on the kennel door. The handler jack pot rewards Nuggy before leaving. 10/26/24: As handler is getting another dog out of kennel, they see a dog run past them and out to the main hallway. Handler immediately closes the kennel door, leaving their dog in kennel and yells "Dog" loudly as they follow the loose dog. Once around the corner, handler spots Nuggy standing in the hallway with a second handler a few feet in front of him blocking him from going any further down the hall. Second handler reports that Nuggy growled at them as they were blocking his exit. After handler has leashed Nuggy, he will growl at second handler again. He puts on the brakes when being returned to kennel, so handler walks him in a circle before guiding him in with mild directional leash pressure. Once in kennel, Nuggy begins jumping up and pawing at kennel door frantically and gets his legs stuck in the leash. A hook is used to remove leash, and handlers make sure door is locked before exiting the room. 10/23/24: Nuggy is laying on his bed as the handler approaches. He slowly comes to the front of the kennel with a low tail wag. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the play yard. Nuggy pulls towards other dogs with a soft body and gently wagging tail. He accepts contact from the handler, eventually turning to solicit contact when they pause. He is offered treats that he sniffs but does not accept. Nuggy is returned to kennel without issue, though he stands on the door as the handler exits. 10/22/24: Nuggy was climbing on kennel door as handler approached. He was leashed with ease and walked on a loose leash to the yard. Due to not yet being collared, Nuggy was kept on a slip leash for duration of interaction. Nuggy relieved himself while outside and sniffed around in the yard. He gave some resistance to going back into kennel but was guided in slowly. Nuggy persistently stuck his paw and nose through the gap in the door as handler tried to remove leash. Nuggy whined as handler locked kennel and slid a treat under the door.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Nuggy has been fearful in care and has escalated to growling at staff in care when he got loose from his kennel as a staff member was trying to return him to kennel. It should always be Nuggy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Nuggy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Bite history (dog): A good Samaritan intervened in a dog fight when his dog was attacked by Nuggy while he was loose on the street. He managed to break up the fight and then called the NYPD to help with Nuggy. Anxiety: Nuggy is a bit anxious in care. If he displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used
