Animal Profile

Frosty Fish

Hello, my name is Frosty Fish. My animal id is #213019. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/24/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Frosty Fish is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Frosty arrived to the care center as a stray. In the care center, Frosty takes treats gently and tolerates handling. However, Frosty is observed to repeatedly jump when highly anxious and over stimulated. Recently, this behavior has intensified as Frosty started jumping and mouthing a staff member shirt then their wrist and did not let go. The mouthing left red marks on their wrist and frosty continued jumping towards the handler with a open mouth. Medically, frosty fish is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Frosty arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center, Frosty has been observed to have poor bite inhibition and lack of basic manners. Frosty has been observed to jump towards handlers faces with an open mouth and mouth handlers wrists with hard pressure. These behaviors are not easily redirected using treats. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend a home with no children. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary (6):: 12/16/24: Frosty Fish is observed to be continuously spinning in kennel, whilst ripping up sheets in his mouth. This occurred during cleaning. 12/11/24: Frosty Fish is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and spinning in kennel as handler begins unlocking kennel door. He is distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. Frosty pulls hard on the way to the street and continues when he first makes it out to the street, he spins on leash and bounces around for a moment but begins to settle as the walk continues. He walks past people on the street without issue but will pull towards dogs he sees on the street. His pulling becomes more moderate as the walk continues and Frosty walks slighty in front of handler. He does not accept tossed treats while out and uses the bathroom outside. After a bit he is brought back inside and is returned to kennel without further issue. 12/8/24: ACS report that Frosty started jumping up and mouthing a staff member's shirt. Frosty grabbed their wrist and would not let go. This left red marks on their wrist. Frosty then started jumping up towards their face with an open mouth. When the staff member returned Frosty to kennel they attempted to use the hook to remove his leash. Frosty began biting and holding the hook while growling. 11/29/24(late entry): Frosty fish was reported to jump on handlers and leash bite out of kennel. The leash biting is a quick bite and release. 11/23/24: Frosty Fish is at the front of his kennel jumping at the kennel bars and barking as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk, he jumps up and mouths handlers hand while they attempt to dispense treats. He is offered treats while in the elevator which he takes softly. While on the street Frosty pulls hard but walks past most people on the street without issue, he will sometimes try to approach people but is kept away from people. He is walked for a while more and pulls hard towards dogs walking across the street. He is then brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

Summary (7):: 11/22/24: It is reported that Frosty fish will mouth the leash but drop it when no tension is applied, while in kennel. 11/18/24: When a handler was in front of Frost Fish's kennel they jumped up and began pawing at the kennel door while standing on their back feet. During this they were panting excessively. This behavior continued until the handler left their sight. 11/3/24: Frosty is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and takes one before being leashed and brought out to the street for his walk. Frosty walks slightly in front of handler but does not pull and walks with a neutral body posture. Once outside he sniffs around and continues to walk with handler. Frosty will hyper fixate occasionally to noises or people that rouse his interest but besides staring, will continue walking with handler. It is difficult to get his attention at times but with some persistence will look up to handler. He uses the bathroom outside and walks around for a while before returning to the building. Frosty returns to kennel without issue. 11/2/24: Frosty is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to jump and spin in kennel towards the bars as handler begins unlocking kennel door. He is offered treats and takes one but refuses treats afterwards for the remainder of his walk. He is taken to the backyard and brought to the first play yard, once inside Frosty is exuberant and jumps up on handler frequently, at one point jumping up towards handlers face. Due to Frosty becoming increasingly exuberant handler begins walking him around the perimeter of the yard to provide more stimuli for him. He pulls moderately and will attempt to approach dogs he passes in other play yards. Frosty is brought back inside and upon returning to kennel does not baulk or pancake and enters without issue. 10/30/24: Frosty is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping at the kennel bars as handler unlocks kennel and is leashed with the help of treats and taken to the backyard for his walk. During his walk, Frosty will stare at dogs he passes in other play yards but does not show actual reactivity towards them. He is brought into a play yard and briefly sniffs around but loses interest and will walk towards the closest door and stand in front of it. Frosty pulls lightly during his walk and uses the bathroom halfway through his walk. He continues to attempt to approach dogs through the gates of the play yard and stare at them but is kept away by handler. He allows handler to clip and walks back into his room fine but when returning to kennel he attempts to plant his paws and pancake and thrashes briefly before being muscled into kennel

Date of initial:: 10/24/2024

Summary:: wiggly, allowed all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Frosty fish so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Frosty Fish's mouthy and anxious behavior, Frosty Fish should got to a home with older children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Frosty Fish engaged in repeatedly jumpy behavior when highly anxious and over stimulated. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Handling/touch sensitivity: Frosty Fish mouths staff member's hand when he is uncomfortable with some touch, such as his back leg being petted or his collar. He does not applied pressure. During his stay in the care center Frosty has become increasingly more mouthy. Frosty has been observed to mouth handlers with hard pressure leaving red marks. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Frosty Fish feel comfortable with some handling and to teach him to grab toys with his mouth instead of hands. Please see the handouts on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition and Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety/Low threshold for arousal: Frosty Fish is highly anxious and has low threshold for arousal. When his anxiety increases, he jumps on staff repeatedly and mouths them, and is slightly difficult to refocus. Frosty Fish should get daily enrichment and learn impulse control using positive reinforcement. Please see the handouts on Low threshold for arousal and General Anxiety.
