Animal Profile

Froyo

Hello, my name is Froyo. My animal id is #206282. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/30/2024.

Froyo is at risk due to behavior concerns. During his time at the Care Centers, Froyo has shown signs of high anxiety and struggles to settle. When anxious, he exhibits displacement behaviors, such as mouthing staff hands, as seen during his assessment and off-leash interactions. Around other dogs, Froyo becomes vocal, barking at them in the pens, and darting side to side and pulling in their direction. He appears frantic during walks and was once observed spinning in circles in the elevator. On one occasion, he jumped toward a staff member who had his back turned, reaching as high as the staff member’s head. Froyo is treat motivated and will have zoomies in the pens. Medically, Froyo is apparently healthy.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. It could be with you! Summary:: 9/4/24: When greeting another dog through the gate, Froyo is neutral and uninterested. He reapproaches then play bows and bounces back and forth. Handler attempts to place a clip leash on for an off leash interaction and Froyo head whips repeatedly, mouthing handlers hand.

Summary (3):: 10/7/24: Froyo is at the front of the kennel with a high tail, alert ears, and neutral body. He jumps up on the door and takes treats. He is leashed using a treat lure and is taken into the elevator. He jumps towards another person in the elevator persistently and is redirectable with treats at first but stops taking them, continuing to fixate on the person and pull towards them while standing on his hind legs. He is taken to the backyard and brought into a pen where he briefly sniffs around. The handler presents him with a toy and he sniffs it but does not take it. He turns and starts jumping up on the handler, leash biting mildly. He will stop momentarily for treats but does not take them. He stops momentarily again at the squeaker noise but continues to leash bite, increasing in intensity and no longer being redirectable with anything. He bites the leash, tugs it hard, and growls and vocalizes as he does so. When the handler allows slack on the leash he bites the leash higher up near their hand. He switches between leash biting and jumping up on the handler to mouth them, occasionally jumping on their back with his paws against them, air snapping behind their head. The handler straight arms him but due to his height he continues to be able to jump on them and leash bite high up near their hand. The handler calls for a secondary handler and Froyo stops leash biting to watch the second handler enter the yard. He starts pulling hard towards them, trying to jump on them and vocalizing. The other handler lassos him and he bites the leash briefly before stopping. He is brought inside and returned to kennel without further issue. One of the leashes is removed using a hook.

Summary (4):: 10/06/24: Handler was seen in the yard struggling to control Froyo. Froyo was intensely leash biting and pulling back as if it were a game of tug of war. He ceased leash biting and rapidly redirected his energy unto handler. He was consistently jumping up at their face, attempting to mouth limbs and hands, as well as hair. Second handler swapped out with original handler. Handler #2 began tossing treats onto his face, distracting him from jumping up as well as leash biting. He attempted to leash bite and jump up 2 more times afterwards. Handler began to play "Up/Down" game with Froyo, rewarding him when he was on top of the bench, and then for hopping down. He was so engaged and receptive that handler introduced verbal cues. Froyo would wait for cue to be said, and then either hop on or hop off and wait for his reward. Handler attempted to pull some of the tufts out of his fur but he would head-whip anytime handlers hand was near his body. Handler ceased. He remained on a leash throughout entire interaction and was returned to kennel without further issue. 10/2/24: The handler swapped with another to take Froyo while outside. Upon approach, Froyo jumped towards and on the handler and was easily leashed. Froyo slightly pulled during walk. As a group of people were about to walk past, the handler gave Froyo a sit command and he followed. He was given treats and remained uninterested to the people. After crossing the street, Froyo kept turning around toward the handler for a treat, and was given one. Upon entering the property, Froyo had a close encounter with another dog, but he was easily pulled away, and did not react when the other dog reacted. Froyo was brought into the elevator and jumped on the handler, as well mouthed their hand. Froyo was returned with ease.

Summary (5):: 9/26/24: Froyo is at the front of the kennel with the a neutral body. He is easily leashed and taken to the playyard. Froyo sits in front of the handler, handler offers Froyo a treat and he is not receptive. Froyo continues to spit the treats out on the floor. Handler reaches for Froyo's collar and he jumps towards them and wraps his arms around them. Handler turns their body in an attempt to get Froyo off them. When that does not work handler straight arms Froyo. Handler attempts to clip dragline again and gets the same response. Froyo continues to not be receptive to treats. When another dog enters the pen next to him, Froyo fixates on the other dog and jumps towards them. This behavior is not able to be redirected. After jumping towards the dog Froyo jumps up on handler with tense body. Handler has to straight arm Froyo again due to him wrapping his arm again. Froyo is returned to kennel with no further issue. 9/20/24: Froyo was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and taken to the elevator. He takes treats from handler gently. While walking through the hallway he stops behind a staff member who has their back turned and jumps up towards them. Handler pulls Froyo away and continues to the street. Handler does check-ins with Froyo, tossing treats and handing treats and he takes them gently. He does not relieve himself on the walk. He pulls hard towards dogs passing and handler keeps him away. He is returned to kennel by tossing treats into his kennel which he goes in easily without further issue. 9/17/24- ACS staff reported when Froyo was on drag leash and when they went to releash, started to jump on them and get mouthy. They grabbed the drag leash and pulled him off them. They were able to put their slip leash on and returned to kennel without issues. 9/15/24- Froyo is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body, he is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. He is placed on a drag leash and he jumps on another handler in the pen. First handler used their squeaker and he comes to them, he gently takes a treat. He again goes to jump on the other handler, they again used the squeaker. He comes back to the handler and takes another treat. Second handler leaves pen and Froyo does zoomies in the pen. He allows handler to brush him, he then does some more zoomies. He is offered treats but shows no interest. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 9/4/24: Froyo is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking and jumping at kennel door as handler begins unlocking to leash. He is leashed easily and brought to the backyard for a gate greet. While in the elevator on the way to the play yard Froyo is restless and spins in circles quickly while occasionally jumping up and barking and pulls hard coming out the elevator. Froyo is brought to the gate and is generally aloof initially when interreacting with other dog. The other dog begins play bowing to which Froyo begins vocalizing and barking at them. Handler ends interaction and brings Froyo back to kennel who is observed barking and yipping all the way back to kennel. Handler returns Froyo to kennel without further issue. 8/31/24: Froyo is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. Froyo begins jumping at the kennel door as handler begins unlocking door to leash. He is leashed without issue and brought out to the street for a walk. Froyo is exuberant and pulls around frantically, in the elevator on the way to the street Froyo jumps on handler and leans on them, accepting pets on the belly before jumping off as the doors open. Froyo continues to pull on the street and will dart from side to side to smell different spots on the street. Froyo will pull hard towards people and dogs he sees on the street and at one point pulls forward randomly very fast and head flips, froyo is kept on a shorter leash which helps alleviate his pulling. Froyo uses the bathroom and is subsequently brought back to kennel without issue. 8/9/24: Froyo is at the front of the kennel soft bodied when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel without issue. He is taken out to the yard where a drag leash is attached. He runs around the pen before sitting in front of handler. Handler offers him a treat which he takes before spitting out. Handler sits on the bench and he leans his body against handler, allowing petting. Froyo then places their front paws on handler's lap. Afterwards, he is returned to kennel without issue

Summary (7):: 8/9/24: Froyo is at the front of the kennel soft bodied when handler approaches. Afterwards, he is returned to kennel without issue 8/2/24- Froyo is at the front of the front with a neutral body, when handler attempts to leash he dodges the leash. He would back up and dodge the leash on each attempt. Handler held out a treat, when Froyo went to sniff handler was able to leash. He was taken for a street. He moderately pulls. He is hypervigilant (zig zagging, looking around). He wasn't reacting to any people or dogs while out, he did jump back when a loud car came down the street. He was offered treats but just sniffed them. He was brought to the room for his assessment. He was heavy panting and aloof with handlers. He took some treats that were offered. He was releashed and returned to his kennel without issue. 7/31/24: Froyo is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. Froyo is tense and stiff bodied, head down and wale eyes directed at handler. He immediately moves to the back of his kennel as handler approaches, handler begins tossing treats to coax Froyo to the front of kennel for leashing. After throwing a few treats Froyo investigates and begins eating the treats, while distracted Froyo is lassoed at the center of the kennel. When the leash reaches over Froyo's head he moves it away and attempts to maneuver his head away, but is successfully leashed regardless. Once leashed Froyo is hesitant to exit kennel, but after being given a moment leaves kennel on their own and is brought to the street. Once on the street Froyo becomes extremely hypervigilant, constantly scanning around frantically, he also expresses a sensitivity to the leash, occasionally whipping his head as he feels pressure on the leash. Froyo begins sniffing around and at one point jumps over some trash and freezes in fear when attempting to jump back over to continue walk. Handler lifts the garbage bags out the way to create a path for Froyo to continue walking which Froyo is able to walk through to continue his walk. Handler returns to the front area of the garage so as to not overwhelm Froyo further during his walk. Froyo remains hypervigilant, and sniffs around wherever he can, he does not accept treats or use the bathroom while out. Handler is able to clip Froyo and begins returning to kennel, but freezes at their kennel door. Froyo is coaxed inside with treats and affirmations and handler ends interaction soon after.
