Animal Profile

Sweet Smoke

Hello, my name is Sweet Smoke. My animal id is #218099. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/6/2025.

Sweet Smoke is at risk due to behavior concerns in care. Sweet Smoke has exhibited fearful and avoidant behaviors in the care center, showing reluctance to leave her kennel and resisting walks. She has displayed raising her hackles, whale eyeing, and barking at handlers when engaging with enrichment in kennel. While she has moments of social engagement, but still remains wary of handling. Sweet Smoke recently recovered from CIRDC.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Sweet Smoke entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/06/25: When off leash at the Care Center Sweet Smoke is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Sweet Smoke approaches with a neutral frame. Both dogs scent one another. The novel male displays a loose frame and toe taps. Sweet smoke displays a knot in her tail and hackles. Sweet Smoke walks away and displacement scents. The novel male remains present. Sweet Smoke returns to the gate, she scents still with hackles and a knot. Sweet Smoke walks away displacement scenting again taking no further interest, this concludes the interaction. Due to Sweet Smokes discomfort a face to face greet was not conducted.

Summary (6):: 03/11/25 Sweet smoke is outside in the play yard with a staff member. She will approach the gate with a soft, wiggly body to greet the handler and the handler will leash her and take her for a walk. Sweet Smoke will trot moderately out of the play yard and is taken for a walk. She will maintain her loose frame as she trots alongside the handler. She will sit firmly when wanting a treat and is administered one, taking it softly. Sweet Smoke will trot alongside the handler as they commence their walk. Sweet Smoke will be returned to the facility where she will maintain her wiggly frame, getting praised and pet along the way. Sweet Smoke will enter the facility and her kennel with no issue. 03/05/25 Sweet Smoke is lying down on her kuranda bed as the handler approaches. She rises as steps forward softly and is leashed with ease. They proceeded outside for a walk. Sweet Smoke will maintain a still, neutral frame as she pulls on the leash. Sweet smoke will pull towards different places so she can explore. She will explore for the most part of her walk, remaining soft. Sweet smoke will takes treats gently when administered and will sit softy willingly when soliciting treats. Sweet Smoke is returned to the facility after a lengthy walk. She will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 2/21/25: Sweet Smoke was flagged to move to Iso and was noted to have consistently resisted going for walks lately. Her kennel was clean, so handler opted to give in kennel enrichment rather than take her out in the cold. Handler 2 was handing out enrichment and dropped Sweet Smoke a soft, squeaker toy sprayed with "bunny" scent into kennel. Handler 1 observed Sweet Smoke climb out of kuranda bed and immediately engage with the toy. She sniffed it and then picked it up in her mouth. Sweet Smoke stood facing handler with the toy in her mouth and handler spoke to her. She began raising hackles before dropping the toy behind her and proceeded to bark and whale eye at handlers 1 and 2 standing in front of her kennel. Handlers opted to let her be. 2/7/25: Sweet Smoke is at the back of his kennel with a low body, low growling with hackles raised across his entire back. Sweet Smoke front legs were on the floor and bag legs splayed across the kurunda bed. Sweet Smoke leashed over his head from a distance, to which he flinches but when around his neck comes out of his kennel. It takes until Sweet Smoke reaches outside to where he shakes off and begins to walk, exploring his surroundings and using the bathroom. Sweet Smoke will approach the handler for treats, but is generally aloof throughout the walk until he is returned to kennel where he runs to the back of his bed immediately. 01/22/25: Sweet Smoke is sitting in the back of her kennel upon the handler’s arrival and will head whip when the slip lead is placed over her head. Once leashed, she is escorted to the training room, where she paces back and forth, demonstrating a loose frame with a wagging tail, though she relentlessly seeks an exit. Sweet Smoke allows the handler to touch her and jogs alongside them, showing engagement. She also responds to knocks on the door but does not escalate. Sweet Smoke is leashed and escorted back to her kennel safely with no issues. 1/8/25: Sweet Smoke's behavior in care remains much the same. She spent much of the time exit seeking but slowly warmed up to handlers after some time in the BA room, approaching on her own terms. Sweet Smoke stood by handler (crouched) and accepted pets with a loose, wagging tail. Handler gave her plenty of breaks every few pets to ensure she was still comfortable with contact and she would step closer. She was returned to kennel without issue by a second handler. 1/7/25: Sweet Smoke is laying in the back of her kennel as the handler approaches. When the handler kneels and drops treats, Sweet Smoke slowly gets up wagging her tail as she approaches the front. She is timid but allows the handler to leash her. She is walked to the behavior room for an assessment. Sweet Smoke remains timid and fearful around handlers in the room and an assessment is not conducted today. Sweet Smoke is safely returned to her kennel with no issues

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety/earful/potential for defensive aggression- Sweet Smoke exhibited a tense body and lip licks. She started searching for an exit, keeping a low posture, showing whale eyes, and avoiding handlers. To help Sweet Smoke with her anxiety and fearfulness, start by creating a calm and predictable environment. Gradually introduce her to new experiences and people at her own pace, using positive reinforcement like treats and praise to reward relaxed behavior. Begin with short, low-stress interactions and slowly increase their duration as she becomes more comfortable. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety. Kennel presence- Sweet Smoke is reported to growl and display high hackles when the handler are in front of her kennel. She will begin to bark at the handlers.
