Animal Profile

Kit

Hello, my name is Kit. My animal id is #221803. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 3/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - abandoned by previous owner.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Kit is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and has been deteriorating behaviorally in care. He continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! Kit tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing.

She proceeded to clean her hand with sterile soap and water. ____________________________ He previously lived with 1 Adults and 4 Other Cats. He is reported to run and hide from strangers.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/13/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Kit has a neutral face and body when i lifted the cover for a better view. He has no interest in treats but did slow blink a few times as i spoke him softly. Kit has no reaction when i slowly brought my hand in to the den for pets and allowed pets on his head and cheeks as he remained still and tolerant. 3/20/25 FB79 Today, Kit displayed the same behavior as the previous enrichment note. He was inside of his den with a tense body and slightly wide eyes when i lift the den cover and he has no reaction when i offer treats as well as when i bring my hand in slowly for him to sniff. I pet on his head and cheeks as he briefly accepts before he starts to lip lick. 3/23/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Kit still feel comfy enough to come out; he has a tense crouched posture with hunched in shoulders and wide eyes. He has no interest in any of the treats that i offer and backs away/ducks when i attempt to pet with my hand. He does however tolerate pets on his head but he starts to lip lick soon after. 3/25/25 FB58 In his den and hidden from view - when the cover is removed, he is laying with a tense face and body, tolerant of pes with the scratcher tool. He shows no interest in treats and accepts pets on his head with my hand but remains frozen in place. 3/27/25 FB79 So sweet boy! Inside of his den, Kit lays with a neutral face/body when i lifted the den cover, slowly leaned in to sniff treats but did not eat. He accepted all pets and really enjoyed cheek rubs as he leaned in for more. Kit sniffed my hand and head bunted soliciting more pets on his head and around his body. 3/30/25 Vol. Kit was lying down in his den, watching me from the opening. I offered him Squeeze Up and Temptations but he would not leave the den to take them. He seemed to be very calm but was not ready to socialize today. 4/4/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with head lowered onto floor. He watches me as I open the kennel door and reach towards him with the scratcher tool. He tolerates petting for awhile while closing his eyes and pretending to sleep, and when I switch over to use my hand he swats it without breaking skin. He is not interested in hands on interaction at this time and he does not engage with the treats or catnip toy offered. 4/10/25 & 4/12/25 FB79 Today, Kit looks very under the weather with crusty eyes and nose and displayed the same behaviors described in the previous enrichment. 4/16/25 FB58 In his den and hiding from view - when I remove the den cover, he is sitting with a tense face and body. He tolerates two pets with the tool before he lunges to swat and nip at the scratcher. Most likely will be NHO once his new DOH hold is up. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Bite History: At approximately 6:55pm on 4/7/2025 VS staff went to give Kit his ofloxacin. She reached in and he allowed petting. She got the medication and reached back into the kennel Kit proceeded to grab her hand with his paw and bite her on the left hand leaving one puncture wound and two scratches. She proceeded to clean her hand with sterile soap and water.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to previous bite history as well the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Kit is in his den and sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears slightly tilted. When the assessor slowly introduces the scratcher tool, he remains in place and tense but is tolerant of touch with the tool. Pick up is not attempted. 4/14/25 Inside of the den, Kit can be heard hissing when the kennel door is opened and when the den cover is lifted he has wide dilated eyes with forward ears and a tightly wrapped tail. He has no interest in any treats offered as he closely watches the assessor through the glass for any movement and snaps his head over to look at the tool when it was slowly introduced into the den to make contract. Kit tolerated pets on his head, cheeks and down/around his body but started to lip lick shortly after and lowered his gaze with his body tense and hunched in shoulders. He did remain still and tolerant but pick up was not attempted at this time to limit FAS. 4/22/25 Kit was in his den as the assessor approached, completely hidden from view. Kit did not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opened. When the assessor reached towards Kit with the assess-a-hand he hissed, leaned towards the hand and bit it hard. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Kit is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to bite and has bitten in the shelter environment. Kit does not allow any petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
