Animal Profile

Iron Titus

Hello, my name is Iron Titus. My animal id is #203174. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/21/2024.

Iron Titus is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Iron arrived at the care center as a stray. During intake Iron allowed handling and took treats gently. However, he grew anxious and began to heavy pant, whining and hypervigilant of his surroundings. In the care center, Iron Titus remains anxious as he is observed to whine and vocalize. Titus also becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mounting them. In a recent incident, Titus grabbed onto someone pants and ripped it when he was mounting. Medically, Iron is apparently healthy.

A bit about me: Iron Titus arrived after someone found him scavenging through the garbage near the front of his home. They said the dog seemed very approachable and friendly. After knocking on the neighbors' doors seeking to find his owners, he brought Iron Titus to us. Upon intake, Iron Titus had a neutral relaxed body and a soft wagging tail. He walked with ease to receive vaccines and then walked into the kennel with no issue. My ideal home: Are you a fan of amazing ears? Then Iron Titus is the dog for you. Iron Titus is a nice dog that has become anxious at the care center, whining, vocalizing and sniffing excessively during their assessment. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Good with other pets? We offer a 2-week trial adoption to help you see if Iron Titus is a good fit for your home. He has been fine with other dogs while in the care center, though he sometimes "humps" other dogs. Since ACC doesn't test with cats, we're not sure how he'd do with feline friends. Good with kids? Iron Titus is shy and uncomfortable with novel stimuli, so we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. He'd thrive in a loving household where everyone understands and respects his need to relax and feel comfortable at his own pace.

Summary:: 6/25/24: Iron Titus greets the other dog at the gate with wide eyes and wagging tail. When off leash with another dog, he immediately jumps on the other dogs back to mount. The dogs are separated and allowed to reapproach. Iron Titus mounts again.

Summary (5):: 11/8/24: Iron Titus is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and takes them excitedly and is leashed while distracted by treats. Titus is walked outside to the street and begins sniffing around almost as soon as he makes it outside. He uses the bathroom and continues to accept treats tossed to him during his walk. He walks past people on the street without issue but begins pulling harder halfway through the walk. Titus pulls very hard at this point causing handler to have to use a firmer grip on the leash, once Titus notices the pressure from the leash he slows down again to a manageable pace. Titus is walked around for a bit more before he is brought back inside and returned to kennel without issue. 11/6/24: A staff member was conducting an interaction with Iron Titus and an interested adopter. Interaction started off in the dog interaction room in PAC where Iron Titus was aloof and smelling around, briefly engaged with the clients but appeared anxious. The handler brought him to the backyard where he pulled hard to get into the pen and turned around to look at the clients before going up to them to sniff them. When the handler closed the pen, they placed a dragline on Titus. As soon as the handlers leash was removed he appeared to have the zoomies but only ran to the end of the pen before body slamming into the adopter. Titus began to hold onto them and humping. The handler moved to step on the drag leash but since the client was circling around with the dog, they wasn't able to get it immediately. When the handler stepped on it and grabbed it, the handler asked for help and the clients moved away. When they moved away, Titus was biting the pants (the baggy part in the back) and the sweatpants ripped as the client pulled away. At this time, the handler had a hold on the leash and Titus was standing still but still fixated on the clients. Another staff member came to help the primary handler and was able to leash Titus. Titus was returned to kennel with no further issue. Handler checked in with clients and they confirmed no skin was broken.

Summary (6):: 10/6/24- Iron titus is jumping on his door when handler approaches with a soft body, he jumps down when the door is unlocked and he is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk. He pulls hard at first, sniffing around. He relieves him self and when handler stops walking he looks back, he comes to handler to take a treat from them. He mark pees on various spot throughout the walk. After awhile, he starts to walk on a loose leash. He allows handler to pet his head, chin and back leaning into handler's legs when his back is being petted. He doesn't react to bicycles passing him along with people. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 9/13/24: When off leash with a voluteer in the yard, Iron Titus ran from one side of the pen to the other repeatedly. He then went under the bench, heavy breathing. He continued to breathe heavily when returned to kennel. 9/8/24- Iron Titus is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is jumps on the door and hard stares at handler. He is returned to the kennel without further issue. 8/3/24: Iron Titus is sitting at the front with a soft body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Iron Titus so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Iron Titus is currently with novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal: Titus quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mounting them. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Titus to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Titus should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Titus. Please see handout on Arousal. Anxiety: Titus appears anxious at the care center, whining, vocalizing and sniffing excessively during their assessment. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
