Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Bella Wella

Reserved
Bella Wella is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Bella Wella's previous owner state that she is friendly and social with strangers, children, and dogs. In the care centers, she has remained social and soft-bodied with handlers. However, Bella Wella has been observed to be having a difficult time settling in kennel as well cage fighting. She has also been noted on multiple occasions to be licking the corner of her kennel, as well as her kennel bars. Even when given enrichment, she still diverts back to licking the kennel bars or the top right corner, near the wall adjacent to the neighboring dog. Medically, she is underweight but otherwise healthy.

Mia
Mia is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Her previous owner states that Mia suffered a medical episode and that her behavior has changed since then. Mia has bitten three people on walks. This bites did not break skin and did not bleed. During her stay in the care center Mia has been social with handlers. Medically Mia is apparently healthy.

Wilson
Wilson is at risk for behavior reasons. Wilson has been a social dog with both staff and volunteers. He has shown potential to become over aroused in certain situations. He will jump up and grab clothing. While on a walk with staff member, he became over aroused and bit a staff members sweatshirt, causing it to tear. As staff held him away from their body, he bit their arm leaving no marks, bruising or broken skin. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Roxy Gal
Roxy Gal is at risk due to behavior reasons. Roxy Gal has been observed to growl at handlers, but quickly warms up when using treats. Even though she has remained social with staff in the care centers, Roxy Gal has also been observed to hard stare and pull towards people while on the street, escalating to both lunging and hard barking. In the backyard, she becomes stiff and tense throughout her entire body, along with a high flagging tail and slight hackles raised. When spotting another dog, either on the street or in the backyard, she will become fixated and handler is sometimes unable to redirect her. Roxy Gal is usually receptive to the use of squeaker toys. Medically, Roxy Gal has a heart murmur.

Milkshake Mama
Milkshake Mama is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Milkshake arrived at MACC as a stray, and initially presented as highly fearful. She would quickly escalate to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards handlers. Throughout her stay in the care center Milkshake has warmed up to handlers and readily accepts treats. In the kennel room Milkshake has been observed to cage fight intensely. She is observed to push off the wall and jump towards the neighboring dogs in the kennel room. While on the street Milkshake has also been observed to fixate on dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or squeakie sounds. Medically, Milkshake is currently healthy.

Rihanna
Rihanna is at risk due to behavior reasons. Rihanna has displayed handling/touch sensitivity, high levels of anxiety, and on leash-reactivity in the care centers. She was noted to bark and growl when restrained, as well as on the street when spotting people and other dogs, she pulls towards them. This behavior is not easily redirectable. While being removed from kennel, she has been reported to kennel fight. Rihanna does have a bite history, where another dog charged towards her and a fight broke out but where able to be separated, resulting in a gash on the right ear of the other dog. With handlers, Rihanna remains aloof, not responsive unless she is pet along her backside. She wags her tail briefly but does not approach or seek further interaction. Medically, Rihanna has a mass on. her tail, chronic otitis, and periodontal disease.

Twix
Twix is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Atina
Atina is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Atina arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. She was surrendered to the police due to a bite incident with her previous owner. However, there was no details surrounding the incident or the severity. During her stay in the care center Atina has been observed to jump up and intensely bite the leash in kennel and while on walks. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Medically, Atina is healthy.

Eyvindr
Eyvindr is at risk due to behavior concerns. Eyvindr has showen arousal and fearfulness. In the care center, Eyvindr has struggled to acclimate, displaying fearful behavior and seeking exit during socialization sessions. He has also shown arousal behaviors, including jumping on handlers and standing on the handler's chest while leash biting. Medically, Eyvindr is apparently healthy.

Pepe
Pepe is on the at-risk list due to behavior. His previous owner describes him as a very active and playful cat who likes to spend most of his time in the bedroom. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Pepe has mild dental disease and a minor wound on his paw.

Cookie
Cookie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During her time at the finders house Cookie was observed to lunge and snap at the resident child without warning. Cookie is also observed to be dog reactive, her finder states that she will hard bark, lunge, snap, and growl towards unfamiliar dogs. During her stay in the care center Cookie has been aloof and avoidant of handlers. Cookie has also been observed to pull hard towards dogs with a tense body. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Medically Cookie has periodontal disease.

Cupid
Cupid is at risk due to behavior concerns. Cupid is a highly social dog with a low threshold for arousal. In the Care Centers, Cupid has been observed biting staff leashes and jumping up high. He can briefly be refocused with treats but remains aroused, often grabbing the leashes once he finishes eating them. At times, Cupid will mouth staff's arms when he can't reach a leash. When calm, Cupid is social and enjoys playing with toys. Medically, he has dental disease and dermatitis.

Dobby

Dobby is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Dobby in the care center is having trouble acclimating despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Dobby is seen throughout the day to jump off his kennel door, pant heavily and his kennel to be smeared with feces due to his persistent jumping. Dobby is social with staff, soliciting petting from staff and enjoying fetch, but is struggling to acclimate to his surroundings. Medically, Dobby is apparently healthy.

Gabriel

Gabriel is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He was brought to the care center after a reported bite incident in the home, where upon arrival, he had an open, bleeding head wound of unknown origin. Details about the bite incident were not provided. In the care center, Gabriel has displayed both social and fearful behaviors. He has been avoidant in his kennel but allows leashing when coaxed with treats. Outside of his kennel, he has shown social behavior, leaning into handlers for comfort and soliciting attention. He has also displayed fearful behaviors, such as army crawling, planting, and whining in response to sudden movements or noises. Medically, Gabriel currently being treated for CIRDC and has dental disease.

Midnight Snack
Midnight Snack needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a young, neutered male cat with history of urinary obstruction. He needs a quiet environment and special diet to manage his condition.

Turkey
Turkey is at risk for behavior reasons. He has been social with staff and volunteers; however, he has some handling sensitivities when the leash applies pressure on certain areas of his body. On one occasion, Turkey snapped at a staff member when uncomfortable. He has shown the potential to become over aroused by novel objects in the yard, some examples are the shovel and scrub brush. He is treat and toy motivated but has trouble maintaining focus. He would do well with an experienced, patient owner who can provide daily mental and physical activity. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Kylo
Kylo is at risk due to deterioration while in care. Despite attempts to keep him comfortable, Kylo has begun to leash bite persistently as he exit the kennel, making it difficult to walk him safely. He is social with staff once settled. Medically, Kylo is apparently healthy.

Pimbon

Pimbon is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Pimbon arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. He has been observed to become tense and fixate on other dogs while hard barking. In the kennel room Pimbon has been observed to intensely cage fight with the neighboring dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats and has escalated to Pimbon thrashing and snapping when being returned to kennel. Medically Pimbon is apparently healthy.

Max
Max was brought to the Care Center following a bite incident involving his owner. All that is known of the bite is that it was to the owner's hip area and it broke skin, with active bleeding. During his time at the Care Centers, Max has been mostly aloof but easily walked by staff. At times, he will kennel fight and focus on dogs with a tense body and at other times, he will ignore the other dogs. Medically, Max is healthy.

Joy
Joy is at risk due to behavior concerns. She has begun to leash bite intensely, refusing to trade for treats or toys, and pace and cry incessantly despite attempts to help her acclimate to the care center environment. In her kennel she displays a high level of stress - bouncing and spinning off the kennel walls, licking kennel walls, and screeching. She was reported by the prior owners to be destructive and have accidents in the home, bark at strangers that approach the home, jump repeatedly up onto people, and pull hard. Joy is also reported to be social with strangers and has been so in the care center. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Sprinkle

Sprinkle is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Sprinkles initially presented as loose, wiggly, and social with handlers during his initial stay in care before being adopted. His adopter returned sprinkles due to landlord issues. Since his return Sprinkle has not acclimated well despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has escalated to growling and lunging at handlers when approached in kennel, including when he has a frozen enrichment item in his kennel, hovering and guarding the item. When removed from his kennel, he begins kennel fighting with other dogs as he passes them. Staff have reported that once outside, he becomes highly reactive to various stimuli, though they were unable to specify the exact triggers due to their wide and various nature. At the end of his assessment, when the assistant bent to pick up the end of his drag leash, he began snapping at their hand. Medically, Sprinkle is apparently healthy.

Rue
Rue is at risk due to deterioration in care. Despite attempts to keep her comfortable, she has begun to dig at the walls of her kennel to the point that shavings are coming off of the wall. Rue is on-leash reactive and has been observed and reported to lunge and snap at other dogs. Rue is social with staff and leans into contact. Medically, Rue has happy tail and 2/4 periodontal disease.

Pookie Bear 3000
Pookie Bear 3000 is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Pookie Bear has been escalating to snapping and snarling when attempting to interact with him and handle him in the care center, he remains intensely fearful in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Pookie Bear does interact with handlers outside of his kennel, but is difficulty to handle him safely to his escalations of snapping at staff members hands when trying to remove him from kennel. Medically, Pookie Bear 3000 is clinically healthy.
