Summary:: Loki has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to hard bark, lunge, and snap when handlers attempt to interact. Due to the high levels of FAS, Loki is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 11/5/26: (KSV) Loki is at the front of his kennel standing up. Handler begins speaking to him and he softens, taking treats from handler gently. Loki refuses a couple of treats so handler offers him a higher value jerky and coaxes him and Loki eats it and wags his tail briefly. Loki continues eating treats from handler, handler offers him treats on the other side of his kennel to get him to move around in his kennel and Loki follows handler. Loki continues with going bakc and forth following handler and is rewarded each time he moves to the other side of the kennel. interaction is ended eventually after multiple reps of this. 11/3/26: (KSV) loki is in the back of his kennel curled up tightly when handler approaches. Loki has a kennel cover so handler lifts it slightly to see him more and loki curls up tighter. Handler begins softly speaking to loki and loki visibly softens his body language. Handler offers loki treats and at first loki sniffs them but does not eat them, handler continues softly talking to loki and eventually loki eats the treat. Handler continues offering treats and soft slow talking and loki softens further, eventually taking the treats directly from the handler and unfurling his body to lay more comfortably. Handler gives him a large treat and interaction is ended. 10/30/26: (KSV) Loki is curled up very tightly into a corner of his kennel when handler approaches. he is whale eyeing and avoiding eye contact, handler speaks softly to loki and loki tenses up further into the corner. Handler offers him treats and he sniffs them and he curls into the corner more. interaction is ended to limit FAS.
Summary (7):: 10/27/26: Staff reported that Loki is not moving over to the next kennel for cleaning. The kennel is covered with a linen and a high value treat trail is leading him into the next kennel. 10/26/26: VS approaches CB for help with Loki. When the handler approaches, Loki is at the back of the kennel standing on the drain. The handler attempts to leash Loki and he lunges forward and bites the leash. He then retreats and bares teeth. The handler uses a pole leash to lasso Loki. He thrashes, vocalizes, snapes, and bites the hook. 10/26/26: Intake Behavior: Staff requested assistance in bringing Loki to his kennel. He was reported to be growling towards the staff member. Handlers approached Loki and he is whale eyed and standing on his hind legs with his front paws on the owner's lap. Owner is asked to place the slip lead over Loki's head. He is guided towards the exit of the vestibule with mild leash pressure. He plants his paws but walks over the threshold. He walks with the handler in a zig zag pattern with wide eyes and a tense body. He is brought towards the kennel room and begins to plant and not move forward. He begins defecating on himself as the handler tries to lift him into the kennel. He uses his paws to block being placed into the kennel. Handler tries to quickly lift him in and he continues to use his front paws to block entry. He begins to thrash and alligator roll before he has to be quickly muscled into the kennel. He tries to push his way out and the leash is removed with a hook. He remains tense. The interaction is then ended.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Loki is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Loki's previous owner states that he will growl, hard bark, and snap when in the possession of toys and food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Loki's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Loki's previous owner states that he will bark and growl when held/restrianed, when pushed off furniture, when paws are touched, and then his collar is grabbed. Loki also does not allow grooming and will escalate to barking, growling, and snapping. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Loki to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Loki's previous owner states that he will hard bark, growl, and snap at strangers. While in care, Loki has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to thrash, lunge, hard bark, and will try and bite the leash when handlers attempt to interact. It is important to move slowly with Loki, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
