Animal Profile

Milo

Hello, my name is Milo. My animal id is #260794. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Milo is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further bite/scratch incidents.

Pre-Screener Form I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! A volunteer writes: Milo wants to be part of the action, he just isn't always sure how to explain that to people. This is relatable and I feel for him. He's a go, go, go, go kind of cat who wants to do all this going at his own pace. Milo's improved quite a bit since coming to us and seems characteristically eager to demonstrate this through repeatedly leaping off his den with a flourish. Since I wasn't entirely sure where Milo was going with this, I offered a pipe cleaner feather, which happily kept his interest for a few moments before he decided nuzzles were better. Then he decided that it was probably best to see the town, as it were, leaning his whole little cat self over my arm in his efforts to get just a tiny bit better view. Milo's hoping to see and be seen, which though it might be easier said than done for a shelter cat such as himself, is hoping to be seen by you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/1/26 Vol. Is in the den lying down with body facing forward and head looking out portal opening when approached, door open and spoken to. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Hissed and swatted treats. Offer squeeze up on scratcher tool. More swatting and stuffed toy landed in the litterbox. Left a tray with small amount of Churu. 8/2/26 FB09 Milo was crouched in his den with dilated eyes and his tail wrapped around his legs. He leaned forward to sniff the treats offered to him before backing away and scanning the room. When offering a hand in front of him, his body tensed, and when beginning to pet him, he hissed. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 8/5/26 Vol. Milo was under the weather and did not seem open to interaction. He was crouched in den, with narrowed eyes and large pupils. He hissed when approached. When offered treats on scratcher tool, he hissed and began to low growl. Ended interaction due to high FAS. 9/4/26 Vol. Sprawled in hidey box (clear front) waking up from nap. Came right out for treat bowl, allowing head touches with hand while eating. Refilled bowl and Milo continued to eat and I was still able to touch. Refilled bowl from squeeze treat tube and dropped tube on floor - Milo saw the tube drop and raced to door, ready to jump down - I pushed him back and shut door. Milo was not happy - he hissed and tried for door again. I stood and apologized and sweet talked and ended interaction. He licked the treat bowl clean, ate some food, calmed down and went into hidey box. 9/6/26 Vol. Milo was pretty reactive. When I lifted the shoreline cover, he started to paw at my hand. I only interacted with him through the kennel door. I slid a kicker through the bars of the door, and Milo really went after it - first with his paws, and then he grabbed it with his teeth. He was very watchful, following every move of my hand and constantly scanning what else was happening around his kennel. His pupils were constricted during the interaction. He did stop being watchful long enough to eat squeeze-up on a tongue depressor. 9/9/26 FB73 Milo is at the front of the kennel, closing watching the handler as they approach. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, he leans forward, head bunting and rubbing his cheeks against the stick firmly for a few seconds before beginning to vocalize, hard swatting and biting at the tool. He alternates between these behaviors throughout the interaction, continuing to loudly vocalize, grab the stick hard with claws, and bite the stick. Interaction is ended to reduce stress. 9/28/26 ACFR Milo is curled up sleeping inside his den. When handler approaches he jerks his head up and makes his way outside the den. He comes forward to the front of the kennel and handler gives some churu. He eats the churu and when it’s finished I offer some head scratches. Milo starts licking the handler's finger so more churu is offered. Head pets were tolerated while giving churu. GAN~

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Affectionate,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: See relevant behavior flyers. Bite/Scratch History: 7/27/26: The client's little sister had a kitten in a crate and wanted to see how Milo would act if a new cat was introduced. The client brought the carrier into the home with the kitten inside. Milo puffed up his tail and growled, then Milo attacked the client's partner. The partner then ran out and tried to get to the door to make sure that the small dog in the home didn't come in as well. Milo was reported to follow and run after the partner, and lunged at his back, latching on. The husband then got him off. The client then went to get the carrier where the cat was inside of and grabbed it to get away. Milo latched onto the carrier; the client then swung the carrier around to get Milo off it he then redirected and latched onto her bottom right arm causing a bite. She then swung him off of her arm. This led to Milo then going after the partner again and attacked him on the left leg, he broke skin again. The husband partner kicked him off and Milo was shut out of the room. 8/12/26: Clients tried giving Milo a bath and that is when Milo escalated again. The incident did break skin. 8/13/26: Client explained that Milo had to be surrendered due to an incident with the owner’s husband on 8/13/26. The client stated that Milo has lived with a small dog the whole time they’ve had him. There have not been reports of behavioral concerns with Milo and the small dog prior. They stated that on the past Thursday the cat attacked the husband on the right leg, breaking skin. They stated that the dog was outside of the room Milo and the owner were in. The dog began scratching at the door, wanting to come in, and Milo began to growl. The client stated that they pet him and laid down with him normally to attempt to calm him down. The client stated that they believe that Milo couldn’t smell the dog properly due to being sick which may have led to confusion. After this, the dog began to scratch at the door again and Milo growled and began to escalate. He vocalized, letting out a loud yowl with a piloerect tail. As he was positioned closer to the husband, he lunged at his left leg, biting and scratching, both of which broke skin. After Milo let go, the husband placed a bed sheet between Milo and himself to separate them. Milo then jumped off the bed and went away as if the incident had not occurred. The client treated the wound at home. 10/3/26: A staff member was in the middle of cleaning Milo’s kennel. When they were pulling his linens out of the main area of the kennel for cleaning Milo was stated to have jumped down and bit their left forearm without warning. 10/10/26 (This incident did not break skin but did leave bruising): Milo was reported by a staff member to swat through the bars intensely during cleaning. When they reached in the kennel to pull the litterbox/clean, he nipped their hand and left a bruise but no broken skin through the glove.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Though Milo was reported to get along well with the resident dog prior to the incidents, due to bite/scratch history, the behavior team recommends an ADULT ONLY home with no other pets to best set him up for success.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: *see GAN for assessment from 7/31/26* 8/21/26 Milo is sleeping inside of his den. He is awakened with a gentle touch on his back with the scratcher tool, and stretches, yawing. He leans in for cheek and head pets on his head with the tool. After a few seconds he playfully grabs the tool with his paws. He then comes out of the den and continues enjoying cheek pets. After a few passes on his back with the tool, his tail is high in the air, when suddenly he turns and grabs the tool again with his paws, pulling it towards him to nip it. He releases and goes to eat his dry food. He alternates between eating and coming back for pets but overstimulates quickly and paws and nips at it again. The interaction is ended and Milo remains at the front of the kennel. 9/22/26 Milo has made improvements since his last assessment and while still showing signs of overstimulation, does not escalate as intensely or quickly. Milo is sleeping inside of his den. When he hears the door opening, he comes out of the den, yawning and stretching. He sniffs the assessor's scratcher tool and pets himself along the tool, his eyes moderately dilated and ears forward. When pet along the back with the tool, his tail begins to sway back and forth and he turns back to watch. He allows several minutes of petting without any escalation, while staying at the front. At the end of the interaction, he is rewarded with treats that he eats eagerly. 10/11/26 Milo is at the front of the kennel, immediately coming forward to greet the assessor at the front of the kennel when he is called to. When the tool is introduced, he immediately begins head bunting and leaning against the tool for petting, leaning in firmly to petting on the head and cheeks. He will periodically tense, biting at the tool before returning to head bunting it. When noises occur in the room or when he hears other people talking, he will tense, backing up and lip licking with his ears back. His attention is refocused with soft talk and treats, which he immediately eats. He continues to lean against and head bunt the tool, leaning in firmly to petting on the head and cheeks, not escalating further. Milo has a behavioral history that precludes placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has a bite/scratch history and although he solicits petting and attention and does display social behavior with staff, he is prone to overstimulation and redirection and may scratch or bite when overstimulated. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
