Jeep Wrangler
Hello, my name is Jeep Wrangler . My animal id is #263268. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 8 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/23/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - hoarding situation.
Jeep Wrangler is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Hi, my name is Jeep Wrangler, and the shelter has been a little overwhelming for me. I came from a home with many cats, who I've gotten along with well. Because I've lived in this home my entire life and have only been around one person, I have little experience with people and am hesitant of new experiences. I would enjoy living in a quiet home, preferably one with lots of vertical space so I have a place to perch and observe the room. I would also appreciate having experienced, patient adopter(s) who are willing to take things slow with me. I would benefit from socialization, using rewards whenever I make a small positive step like making eye contact, allowing petting, or sniffing your hand. I'd prefer to take things at my own pace and would appreciate some good old fashion TLC. If you can open your heart to adopt a cat like me, I'll hopefully have the confidence to come around to my new people, like you!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/30/26 Vol. Resting in den, near portal but facing inward. Moved away when the tool approached and did not investigate cup of Temptations and squeeze-up dropped in. Did not respond to sweet talk. Had not come out to eat breakfast. 8/31/26 FR Jeep wrangler was crouched in his den when approaching kennel. Churu was given on a stick. Jeep stayed crouched in his den and started to drool, but no interest in the treat. Ended session with feliway felt and churu. 9/6/26 ACFR Inside his den and hissed when approaching kennel. He showed little interest in treats. Sniffed but didn’t eat. I attempted petting him with scratcher, but he backed up into the corner of his den. Jeep didn’t swat or hiss during this interaction. I ended the session with treats. 9/9/26 FB09 Jeep Wrangler was crouched in his cubby with dilated eyes and his tail wrapped around his legs. He returned slow blinks and sniffed the treats before eating. He initially flinches when pet but then allows pets on his head and body with click stick while returning slow blinks. 9/10/26 In cubby, hisses upon approach. Alert with eyes wide. He retreats and squints throughout the interaction. Allows petting on the head with the scratcher tool. 9/12/26 FB09 Jeep Wrangler was lying in a loaf position in his cubby with dilated eyes and his tail wrapped around his legs. He returned slow blinks and sniffed the treats given to him before eating them. He slowly backed up in his kennel but allowed petting along his head and body with click stick while returning slow blinks. 9/13/26 Vol. Hiding in cubby behind privacy cover, crouched in the back. Shied away from cup of Temptations and squeeze-up on the tool but ate when left alone with them in the cubby. Eagerly ate from a medicine tray with tuna. Shied away from scratcher tool and contorted himself in back of cubby to avoid contact. 10/14/26 ACFR Jeep Wrangler was resting in his den when approached. The handler used the scratcher tool to initiate contact and Jeep Wrangler tolerated slow strokes on the head and cheek but did not enjoy strokes down the body. The handler then swapped to use their hand. Jeep W. sniffed the hand with hesitancy and tolerated a few slow strokes on top of the head. When the handler moved their hand away, Jeep hissed, swatted and lunged half way out of his den at the handler.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Due to coming from a home with a large number of other cats, Jeep Wrangler may have been somewhat socialized to their people but not appropriately socialized to humans/strangers. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people, we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans Jeep Wrangler has a scratch history that occurred in shelter. During an adoption interaction, a client was offering squeeze up treats and when the squeeze up treat was being taken from the cat, he reacted, swatted and scratched 3 fingers (index, middle, ring) in a diagonal, downward motion leaving 3 distinct surface level scratches. After the scratch, Jeep Wrangler retreated.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Other,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter, scratch history, and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Jeep Wrangler would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. Jeep Wrangler may benefit from being in a home with another, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom he can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help him gain confidence and comfort in a new environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 08/26/26 Jeep Wrangler is laying in the back of his den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and body tense. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, he scoots back further, hissing and lip licking. He is tolerant of all petting with the scratcher tool but does not engage and remains very tense. Treats are offered but he does not show interest. When the assessor goes to slowly remove the tool, he begins repeatedly hissing. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior. 09/26/26 Jeep Wrangler was lying in a loaf position in his cubby and looked up at the handler with dilated eyes. When the handler offered him treats, he initially hissed and squirmed back before slowly leaning forward to sniff them. He returned slow blinks with the handler and allowed petting with the click stick as his eyes softened. He waited until the handler left to fully eat his treats. 10/17/27 Jeep Wrangler is at the front of the kennel sitting upright with forward ears and slightly dilated eyes. He sniffs offered squeeze up from scratcher tool but will not eat it until it is placed in front of a tray in front of him. While eating, he allows a brief pass of the tool on his cheeks and along his body before flattening his ears and running to hide in his den. He peers out of the portal and when the assessor pushes the tray of the squeeze up to the opening, he puts his paw out to lightly swat at the tool before ducking further in the den. Once the door is closed, he comes back out to finish his treats. Jeep Wrangler is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.
