During interactions, Brewster is now quick to escalate to lunging and swatting. When lunging, Brewster will smack his face into the den or into the kennel bars. Given his fearful behavior and inability to have successful interactions, it is in his best interest to be moved out of the kennel environment as quickly as possible. Brewtser would benefit from an experienced adopter with a stable, low-traffic environment. Medically, he has mild-moderate dental disease, alopecia, is underweight, and has been having diarrhea.

I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. Bumps noted on tail during sanitary shave. Has been hiding in den. Recent episode diarrhea. Telazol 0.1ml IM provided adequate sedation for exam and treatment: MSI: Pustules on tail A: Pyoderma P: -Convenia 0.36ml SQ -Restart Gabapentin @ 50mg q24h for FAS -Transfer to cage with portal in ISO to facilitate decompression

Behavior Assessment

KNOWN HISTORY:: Brewster was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/24: Brewster is lying at the back of his kennel, hidden behind his den when staff approaches. They slowly remove all the linens from the kennel and take out his den. He crouches in the corner of his den and hisses at staff. They try to gently coax him to the other side of his double but he plants himself in the corner. Staff slowly reintroduces the den into the kennel with the opening facing Brewster. They are able to get him in, close the door, and take it out of the kennel in order to clean. In the den, he growls, but staff is able to return him to his kennel without issue. They use the portal closer to open the den portal and close the kennel door, ending the inter 8/8 Brewster is at the back of his kennel, hissing and swatting at staff when staff tried to do an interaction. Staff then tried to use a wand toy, and Brewster started to growl and hiss at staff. Brewster had a tense body, so staff ended the interaction. 8/22 Brewster is in his den when staff opens the kennel door. He hisses and swats at them from inside the den. Staff closes the den portal and removes it from the kennel to clean. When staff passes by he continues to swat at them from inside the closed den. He is returned to his kennel once it is clean and staff carefully reopens the den portal. Brewster again hisses at them from within the den. The interaction ends there. Continued in GAN

Potential challenges comments:: Brewster has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/26: Brewster is growling loudly as the handler approaches his kennel. He is completely inside his den and is not visible. As the kennel door is opened, he lets out a loud hiss and strikes the front of the den. The handler remains still and he stops growling. His head appears near the portal to reveal his dilated pupils and airplane ears. A scratcher tool is slowly extended out and he swats it multiple times, hitting it hard. As the tool is being removed, he lunges out of the den. The handler closes the kennel door and he slams into the bars. Brewster enters his den and lunges forward, smacking against the front of the den as he strikes it. He continues to growl loudly as the interaction is ended. 7/26: Brewster is laying at the front of his den with constricted pupils and upright ears. He lays with his head lowered and paws out in front of him. The handler slow blinks at him and he stares up at them. A scratcher tool is extended out and he hisses. As he hisses he moves towards the tool, touching it with his nose. The tool is rested near him and he leans forward to sniff. The tool is then picked up and used to pet along his back. He hisses again and makes contact with his nose against the tool. Brewster pushes himself to the back of the den and begins to growl. Brewster is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has been growling, swatting, lunging and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
