At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. At-Risk Animals

Tallie

Tallie is at risk due to behavior concerns in care. While she has demonstrated some progress in training sessions, Tallie has also displayed growling, snapping, and making contact without injury towards a handler's hand when they attempted to clip her collar. Tallie exhibits difficulty self-regulating and displays a high level of anxiety/fearfulness, often urinating on herself and hiding towards the back of her kennel when unfamiliar handlers attempt to leash her for walks. Medically, Tallie has dermatitis but is otherwise healthy.

Kiki

Reserved
Kiki is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He is has never been socialized in the home and has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels and high reactivity, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into an appropriate environment in which he can be consistently met with and socialized appropriately. He would do best at a facility/space that is willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping severely under socialized cats adjust to the world and home life.

Ronda

Ronda is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ronda has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best effort to keep her comfortable. Ronda will pancake, and refuse to enter back into her kennel and is noted to pull hard and unable to settle outside even for longer walks. Ronda is social with staff but struggling in the care center. Medically, Ronda is slightly underweight.

Beans

Beans is at risk due to behavior concerns. She was described to be a social, friendly, and affectionate dog by her previous owner. During her intake exam she was very loose and wiggly, jumping up socially on staff. Throughout her stay she has allowed all handling but has been observed to very anxious. Often noted to vocalize loudly, while jumping up very high, with all four paws leaving the ground, and often scrambling and pulling very hard while whining. On leash, she has been reported to be reactive to pigeons and on occasion has escalated to thrashing on leash. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Storm

Storm is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Storm has a multiple bite history pertaining to resource guarding and fearful defensive behaviors. Storm’s previous owner also states that she may growl, snap, or bite when pushed off furniture or when held/restrained. During her stay in the care center Storm has allowed handling however, when a handler attempts to interact with her she quickly escalates to becoming tense, freezing and growling. Medically Storm is obese.

Breezy

Breezy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. These concerns have been in his previous home as well as in the care center. Breezy in the care center is intensely fearful despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, avoiding interaction with staff when outside and persistently scanning his environment. Breezy does have a bite history in the previous home, biting the previous owners leg leaving a scratch and breaking skin. Medically, Breezy is apparently healthy.

Houdini

Houdini is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Houdini in the care center has displayed a high level of dog reactivity, making it difficult to walk him safely at times due to his size and intensity. Houdini will lunge, hard bark and pull hard towards other dogs he sees and is noted to also begin to mouth staffs items and clothes after reacting. Medically, Houdini is apparently healthy.

Rocko

Rocko is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rocko in the care center has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Rocko will hypersalivate, rebound off his kennel door and is soaked in saliva when being removed from kennel. Rocko is social with staff, but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Rocko is apparently healthy.

Yamuhe is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Pewter

Pewter needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a calm cat with chronic diarrhea and anemia. He needs an internal medicine consult and imaging for suspected inflammatory bowel disease. We are managing him with a special diet and anti-inflammatory medication which he may need indefinitely.

Ace

Ace is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner describes him to be a playful, affectionate, and friendly dog with people. From the moment of his arrival Ace has been displaying very high levels of fear, anxiety, and stress. During his intake and medical exam he was noted to be vocalizing loudly, whining, panting, pacing, but allowed muzzling. Throughout his stay, he has been observed to continue similar behavior, along with new behavior such as cage fighting, mounting, and mild leash mouthing. It was reported by staff that his cage fighting has progressively gotten more intense, during one incident, he turned towards the handler and lunged at them. He was straight armed and began to thrash. Medically, he has alopecia, Malassezia, and pyoderma which has improved.

Aries

Aries is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center. He has warmed up to staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels noted in his past, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable calm home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a startled cat reactions adjust to strangers.

Rose Bud

Rose Bud is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Rose Bud was observed to be highly dog reactive while at the Care Centers. She has been noted to consistently pull hard towards dogs while growling, tense body, despite having ample distance and space. She is also not able to be redirected with treats, sounds, or verbal cues. Recently her reactivity has been escalating; Rose Bud has begun to now jumping towards the end of leash and continues to be difficult to redirect. When handlers try to block line of sight with other dogs, Rose Bud is observed to be persistent in trying to re-establish visual by pulling hard in the direction of the dog. Rose Bud is non-reactive to people on leash, and is aloof with familiar staff. Medically, she is noted to have undetermined allergies but otherwise is healthy.

Sundar Popo

Sundar Popo is at-risk due to medical concerns. Sundar Popo was reported to be hit by a car on 8/9 and sustained a fracture to his tail. He has been bright, playful, affectionate, eating well and urinating on his own. However, he has reduced anal tone and is suspected to have fecal incontinence (he is currently producing normal stool without intention/posturing). He solicits pets and allows all medical handling. Sundar Popo requires cage rest and time to allow his tail injury to heal, and close monitoring to ensure that his anal tone returns.

Timmy

Reserved
Timmy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Timmy in the care center has not been acclimating well despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Timmy in care has been generally uncomfortable and fearful, shying away from staff when approached, reluctant to be leashed or come forward and is now not wanting to leave the building for his daily walks. Timmy is social with familiar staff in the care center, but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Timmy is apparently healthy.

Blue Shell

Blueshell needs at risk for medical reasons. She is a sweet, geriatric dog with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex. She needs placement in a home in order to overcome her infection.

Zorro

Zorro is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially, Zorro while noted to be fearful at times, Zorro was consistently able to be walked outside and in play-yards without issue. Recently however, Zorro has been refusing to walk outside, especially during his mid-day and evening walks. Although easily leashed, Zorro has been baulking in the hallways of the Care Center, unable to be coaxed forward with treats, verbally, or leash pressure. This has been happening when attempting to bring him out to sidewalk or play-yards. Recently when brought into an office, Zorro refused to leave and a sling had to be used to lift Zorro out of the room. With familiar staff Zorro is noted to be social. Medically, Zorro is apparently healthy.

Diamond Bright

Diamond Bright is at risk due to behavior concerns. Her previous owner describes her to be a friendly and playful dog. During intake, she was observed to be panting heavily but allows all handling. However, during her medical exam she was described to persistently resist restraint and escalates to thrashing. Diamond Bright has remained highly fearful throughout her stay at MAAC. Often observed to have a tense body and tucked tail, heavily panting, pulling hard and darting in all directions, hiding behind handlers and objects, and planting herself, refusing to walk. Medically, she is apparently has CIRDC, Dental Disease, Otitis Externa, and is Overweight.

Baloo

Baloo is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She has begun to hiss and trembling intensely whenever someone is standing in front of her kennel. She is no longer tolerating any handling. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Puffin

Puffin is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Puffin has been observed to be highly rope and dog reactive during his stay in the care center. Puffin has been observed to jump up, bite, and tug the leash into kennel so intensely that he caused his mouth to bleed. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats, spray cheese, squeaky sounds, or toys. He has also been observed to chew through multiple leashes. After exiting kennel Puffin spun and bit the handlers pant leg. Puffin is also noted to be dog reactive. He is observed to pull towards the other dogs in the kennel room, then spin towards the handler and jump up on them with a tense body. Medically Puffin has dental disease.

Bella

Bella is at risk due to behavioral concerns. During Bella's intake medical exam, Bella was noted to be resource guarding with rapid escalation, snapping at handlers requiring her to be muzzled for the medical exam. Bella is also noted to become tense bodied when she has a toy in her possession. Recently, Bella has begun to leash bite with increasing intensity. At times when exiting kennel Bella will leash bite with high intensity and not be able to be redirected; Bella has been noted to jump vertically to bite the leash as well creating a possible safety risk for handlers. In play yards and on walks Bella is social and treat motivated. Medically, Bella is noted to have Dental Disease, but is otherwise is apparently healthy.

Starr

Starr is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Starr in the care center is intensely fearful of her environment, despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Starr with unfamiliar staff will shy away from being leashed, avoid interaction and remain generally fearful during most sessions. Starr has warmed up to some select staff, allowing petting and playing with them but remains intensely fearful of her surroundings. Medically, Starr is apparently healthy.

Phillips

Phillips is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Phillips is showing significant signs of deterioration in kennel despite efforts to keep her comfortable. Earlier in her stay at the Care Centers, Phillips was noted to be vocalizing and persistently pawing at her kennel door. Recently, she has been observed to be jumping persistently in kennel, 'air-snapping' at her neighboring kennel; additionally has been noted to be digging and pawing at the wall of her kennel. Phillips has also at times been mouthy with staff's forearms when attempting to leash or fitting for a harness, when being mouthy she is able to be verbally redirected momentarily however resumes jumping up and being mouthy, toys are more effective in redirecting her. With staff, Phillips is highly social and solicits petting. Medically, Phillips is apparently healthy.
