ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/9/26 FB79 Under his linen Papa is curled up with his eyes wide and his ears forward when i lifted the blanket. He had no reaction to treats but slow blinked as i spoke to him. Papa had his shoulders hunched in with his tail wrapped when i removed the linen and jumped to the top of the kennel when as i started to place a flip bed in the main part of him. He remained tense as he looked around the room with wide eyes but would slow blinks when i spoke to him. Didnt push contact today - want him to be more comfy 8/10/26 FB25 Papa is inside of the flip bed, curled into the corner. I can see his face partially, and he has forward ears and very wide eyes and dilated pupils as he watches me. I talk softly to him and place treats outside the kennel, to which he has no reaction. I slowly reach in to place squeeze up closer, and he hisses once. I keep my distance and talk softly to him and slow blink, he remains frozen in place. Hopefully he will enjoy the treats when I leave. 8/13/26 FB25 Papa is sitting at the front of the kennel watching me interact with other cats. When I make eye contact and speak to him from afar, he starts hissing, keeping a hard stare on me. I slowly approach and he hisses multiple times with a wide, open mouth. His pupils are dilated and he has forward ears, sitting in an upright position. I bring over a cover for the litter box side where he is sitting, as the rest of the kennel is already covered. He begins lunging at the door several times harshly. His paw gets stuck in the door, but once I returned from quickly retrieving a tool to help detach him, he had already pulled it off. He is growling, and finally retreats to his flip bed. It is unclear if he was triggered by something in particular as this is different from the behavior we have seen from him so far. 8/14/26 FB79 Under his lip bed, Papa hissed when i lifted the kennel cover; his eyes were wide and his ears forward. When i entered the kennel and greeted him he continued to hiss harshly with dilated eyes and his ears tilted. His tail was wrapped tightly and he had no interest in treats. I spent some time talking to him and shortly after he settled down and stop hissing but his body remained tense with his eyes wide. 8/15/26 FB58 In his flip bed and tensely loafed, he is a sickie boy so I don't really push him. With the cover lifted, he hisses every 5-6 seconds but also returns slow blinks ever other time as I speak to him and he doesn't lunge. I offer him some squeeze up and dry treats in a tray. 8/20/26 FB61 Today we did our 'fraidy cat session. He hisses softly, no lunging, and I end the session each time he switches from hissing to slow-blinking. He appears to catch on quickly today, each time I stop by he hisses less. -GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/7/26 At the back of the kennel, Papa is crouched with his paws tucked and his eyes wide when the assessor greeted him; he had no reaction when greeted or when treats were offered. Papa remained still/tolerant when the assessor brought the tool close for him to sniff - however, when it made contact on his head for pets he flinched back and looked up sniffing at it. After a few moments Papa , tolerated all pets on his head and cheeks as well as around his back/body with no further reaction. When pick up was attempted the assessor was able to reach over and begin to secure him in their hands but Papa became squeamish and started to back/pull away from the assessor grip. When let go Papa curled up with his tail wrapped and his eyes still wide/dilated and forward ears. He remained still with no further reaction but pick up was not attempted again at this time to limit FAS. 8/17/26 Papa has been showing increased signs of stress while at the care center. He presents for his re-evaluation today inside of his flip bed with a tense body. He hisses repeatedly when the cage cover is lifted with a wide, open mouth and flattened ears. His tail can be seen tapping beside him. The assessor attempts slow blinking and speaking gently, however he continues to hiss and begins to growl. When a scratcher tool is slowly brought toward him, his growls become louder and he swats at it harshly. Papa is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports he enjoys being in rooms where the people are, independent and gives kisses when comfortable in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.
