Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/15/26: Velveteen is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with a neutral body and low tail. She sniffs the other dog nose to nose through the barrier but retreats when the other dog pushes his snout towards her, not reapproaching. 8/8/26: Velveteen is introduced to a novel intact female and is avoidant of the other dog initially, looking at them and then walking away. She then approaches the fence watching the other dog with perked ears and a neutral body, as the other dog sniffs around the catch pen. The other dog approaches the fence and Velveteen sniffs nose to nose with a neutral body and low tail, and then walks away.

Summary (5):: 8/30/26: Velveteen is at the front of her crate with a loose, wiggly body, jumping and placing her two front paws on the crate door and demand barking as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and exits the crate; she jumps up socially at handler briefly but when they start walking she jumps down. Velveteen pulls hard outside and is brought to the play yard; she does not react to people or dogs they pass. As they enter the play yard, a dog is exiting on the other side of the pen fence and screeching at the dogs in the pens; Velveteen looks in his direction but does not otherwise react. She engages enthusiastically in a game of fetch for about 5-7 minutes. She will drop the ball and back away, allowing handler to pick it up and throw it again for her. After a while, she becomes tired and lays down with her ball, panting moderately and chewing at her ball. Handler sits on the bench and calls Velveteen over; she approaches readily but ducks away when handler reaches out to pet her side. Handler cues her to sit and offers treats; Velveteen looks at handler but does not sit. After a moment, she walks away and returns to her ball. Handler easily re-leashes Velveteen and brings her back inside - she pulls hard back into the shelter but does not show any reaction to people or dogs she passes. She is placed on a drag leash in the office where she is being housed so handler can clean her crate; while handler is cleaning, Velveteen explores her surroundings and plays with a tennis ball, intermittently approaching handler and sniffing around where they're working. Once her crate is cleaned, she goes in after handler throws a tennis ball in ahead of her and she settles.

Summary (6):: 8/28/26: Velveteen is at the front of her kennel with a loose body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking out the room, Velveteen looks at the kennels but doesn't react. When the handler attempts to pet Velveteen, she shies away. Velveteen walks with mild to moderate leash tension; when she walks past other people, she frantically pulls moderately presenting a lowered body and looking at them. As the handler sits down on a stoop, Velveteen approaches with a neutral body; she takes treat softly and allows pets. When people walk past, Velveteen quickly looks back at hem; when a familiar handler approaches, they present a treat, but Velveteen rejects it and immediately pulls moderately back to the shelter. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Velveteen to her kennel. 8/26/26: Velveteen is report to be reactive to dogs by luging at them; she isn't redirectable. Additionally, Velveteen pulls hard during her walk, and pulls harder while going back to the shelter. 8/18/26: Velveteen is sleeping on her kuranda bed. Handler unlocks the kennel. Velveteen stands up and approaches the front with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and exits the kennel with whale eyes. She walks slowly besides the handler and takes treats gently when offered. Velveteen continues to walk slowly as she is taken back to the shelter. She is brought to the assessment office where she walks around, she does not greet the assessor. After her assessment, Velveteen is taken back upstairs and is returned to kennel without issue 8/18/26: Velveteen is sleeping on her kuranda bed. Handler unlocks the kennel. Velveteen stands up and approaches the front with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and exits the kennel with whale eyes. She walks slowly besides the handler and takes treats gently when offered. Velveteen continues to walk slowly as she is taken back to the shelter. She is brought to the assessment office where she walks around, she does not greet the assessor. After her assessment, Velveteen is taken back upstairs and is returned to kennel without issue. 8/15/26: Velveteen is at the front of her crate with a wiggly body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. Velveteen is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes); afterwards, she is returned to her crate with ease.

Summary (7):: 8/6/26: Velveteen is at the front of her crate with a loose, wiggly body, demand barking as handler approaches. She jumps up at the crate door as handler is unlocking it but backs away as they present their leash. She is able to be leashed without issue using a treat lure and taken out for a street walk. She pulls mildly on leash and will stay close to handler, wandering in front of their feet. She jumps up frequently at handler, pawing at their legs in a frantic manner. She is able to be redirected with treats and mild leash pressure and will walk a few steps, but then jumps up again - this is repeated a few times. As they walk closer to a busy avenue, Velveteen tenses slightly, tucks her tail, pins her ears back, and walks with a low, crouched body. She will dart away from the avenue, pulling back towards the shelter. Handler is able to coax her to continue walking with baby talk and treats - but she maintains a tense body and is hypervigilant throughout the remainder of the walk. As they begin walking back towards the shelter, Velveteen pulls very hard in the direction of the care center. Handler stops for a moment to give Velveteen a moment to rest and reset; she calls Velveteen to her and offers treats, which she eats after they are thrown on the ground. Velveteen stays close to handler with a tense body, hypervigilant of her surroundings. After a moment, they continue walking and Velveteen pulls hard back to the shelter. She is returned to her crate without issue. 8/3/26: As handler approaches Velveteen is at the front with a low body, slight whale eyes and a tucked tail. As handler attempts to leash, she would dodge the leash and flee towards the back. A familiar handler is alongside, and she would slowly approach the front and is then leashed with a wide loop. She would then slowly exit the crate and is removed from the office. Once outside of the office, she would baulk and a familiar handler would then coax her using a soft voice and slightly jog forward, which she was receptive towards. Once out on the street, she would baulk again and handler would use a soft voice with treats and she would then continue the walk. She would walk on a loose leash and remain hypervigilant on leash. Velveteen wouldn't react towards any dogs or people and is then brought back inside for her assessment. Once completed, returned to her crate with ease

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Velveteen so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Velveteen has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body and show whale eye when handlers attempt to coax her closer. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Velventeen would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
