Summary:: 7/19: Carlito enters the room with a stiff body and slow movements, scanning the office. He does not bend to sniff pieces of chicken breast or sliced cheese that handlers toss near him. He is wary as he tracks the handler's movements, tail low, almost tucked. His eyes widen, and he displays one exaggerated slow lip lick while slowly stepping backwards when approached. Due to his behavior and body language, he is returned to his kennel, and a handling assessment is not conducted. 7/16: A handling assessment was unable to be conducted due to Carlito running to the back of his crate while hard barking and growling at a handler.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-dog history recorded. 07/20/26 Carlito is introduced to a novel female while on a loose leash (does not tolerate collaring). He maintains a slightly tense, anxious frame throughout and will look at the female briefly but does not approach.

Summary (6):: 09/15/26 (Trainer Note): Carlito is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He begins to paw at the door on his hind legs and high pitch bark as handler unlocks the door. A treat is used as a lure to leash him and he is brought to the canine behavior office. He is put on a drag leash as he sniffs around the room, engaging with different snuffle mats. Carlito remains soft bodied throughout interaction, remaining focused on the snuffle mats and treats. He allows petting from familiar handlers and is returned to his kennel. Handler tosses treats into his kennel to secure him. 9/12/26 : Carlito is jumping and barking at the front of his kennel door that is covered in feces as handler approaches. He is able to be distracted with treats as the handler leashes him, and he is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull ahead to sniff around and mark his territory. He would stare at dogs that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. He would constantly stare at the handler to receive more treats. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 09/08/2026: Carlito is standing at the front of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats to the back and Carlito follows, handler uses the "bullseye" method to leash him. He is removed and taken to the canine behavior room for a walk. He remains tense bodied when interacting with handler. He is very treat motivated and participates in some pattern games. As he is returned to kennel he whips around (once in kennel) and bites the leash, attempting to pull it in. Handler tosses a handful of treats and is able to remove the leash. 09/06/26: It is reported that Carlito whips around and begins leash biting significantly when returned to kennel. Handler had to muscle him into kennel. They report that he is also extremely stressed in kennel, launching off the walls while vocalizing.

Summary (7):: 09/01/26: Carlito is standing at the front of his kennel, vocalizing and jumping up on his hind legs. He takes treats from the floor while handler leashes him. He is then brought outside for an enrichment outing. While outside, Carlito maintains a neutral frame and walks on a loose leash moderately ahead of handler without pulling. Once this session is complete, Carlito is brought back to the care center. Upon returning to his kennel, he begins leash biting and pulls toward the street. He eventually releases the leash and remains in his kennel safely without any further issues. 8/18/26: Carlito is at the front of his kennel jumping up onto the glass and barking. He is leashed with ease and brought out on a walk where he will sniff around and relieve himself. He is aloof to the handler, even when they offer treats. He will pass various dogs from a distance and has no reaction. He is secured safely in kennel. 7/29/26: Carlito is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought out on a walk. Carlito will flinch at loud noises throughout the walk. He ambles slowly next to the handler and relieves himself. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 7/20/26: Carlito is laying down on his bed with a tense body as handler approaches. He approaches the door slowly as the handler unlocks it and allows the handler to leash him with no issues. He is then taken to the yard for play group. In the yard, he has a tense body and low tail and has no interest in greeting the other dog at the gate. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 07/19/26 (Assessment): Carlito is laying on his bed at the back of the kennel. He does not come forward for treats or verbal coaxing, so the handler lassos him and brings him to the office. He stands in the middle of the room, stiff, tense, and whale-eyeing the handlers. He is brought back to his kennel without issue. 7/18/26: Carlito is reported to have a tense body when being leashed in kennel. The handler reports that once he was leashed, he continued to have a tense body and refused to exit the kennel. 7/16/26 (Assessment): Carlito was lying on his bead at the back of kennel as handler approached. When handler opened kennel door Carlito started trembling. Handler offered treats but Carlito stayed where he was. Handler attempted to lasso him but once the leash touched him he jerked back and continued to tremble. Handler decided to let him stay in kennel.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Tank is currently with touch and novel stimuli, and his potential for defensive aggression, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Carlito has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Carlito has been highly fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Carlito should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Carlito's choice to approach a new person or thing. He would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on decompression period.
