Tuna
Hello, my name is Tuna. My animal id is #264442. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/4/2026.
Tuna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form What my friends at ACC say about me: Tuna appreciates attention and petting, and is very people social - however he has shown major improvement related to his threshold for petting and interactions -however it should be noted that he may have the potential for overstimulation, has a high level of energy, and is very demanding of petting. Any potential adopter should have experience with overstimulation, be capable of reading body language, and know how to interact and end petting/interactions before Tuna has a chance to escalate. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I am playful and cute! I am not one to sit still! I will flourish in a home with someone that will keep me mentally and physically active!

When asked to detail his behavior, he was noted to be very friendly and approachable. Upon intake Tuna was very friendly and docile with counselors allowing all handling to be done. He allowed counselors to scan for microchip, collar and place from carrier into kennel. All done without any concerns.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 09/14/26 FB47 Tuna is in his den as I approach the kennel. When I open the kennel door and and greet he remains in the den. I slowly lift the den cover. He lays relaxed in his den. We slow blink at one another but he has no plans of leaving. I leave him a tray of treats by the den opening. A few minutes after I leave I see him emerge and reproach the kennel. He sniffs my hand and lets out a huff. I stand in the entrance of the kennel as he eats talking softly to him. Will continue to build positive associations. 9/17/26 FB79 At the top of the kennel, Tuna watches the light show with wide eyes, a tense body and a low/med level tail; he had no reaction when i entered the kennel but slow blinked a couple times as i spoke. I slowly brought the tool in he leaned in to sniff but when i attempted contact he snapped back with tilted ears. When i returned with treats Tuna had entered his den and when i lifted the den cover he was crouched with a wrapped tail and his eyes still wide. 9/23/26 FB25 Tuna comes to the front of the kennel as I display a light show and play music for enrichment time. He chirps a few times, then remains at the front, watching from a crouched position. He returns a few slow blinks and just watches as I slide in a dish of treats with no negative reaction. 9/27/26 FB79 Tuna is at the front of the kennel, with a neutral face and body and mid level tail when i approached; he leaned out far to sniff and look around the room when i entered the kennel but when i tried to get him to back up he reached out to swat at my arm. I tossed in a toy into his cubby which he went to so inspect while i reached into the kennel to open the den which he was locked out of. 9/29/26 FB25 Tuna came out of his den and remained calm, though his body appeared tense with a hard, focused stare while I gently pet his head. I offered him a dish of treats, which he readily ate. He looked around the room curiously over my shoulder. 10/4/26 FB25 Tuna was curious and calm today, rubbing along the front of his kennel with a high tail. When I entered, he leaned into pets on his head and readily accepted treats. He also investigated some new catnip toys. 10/05/26 FB47 Upon approach Tuna is in his den. When he hears the kennel door opening he quickly emerges. His face and body are relaxed, he meows loudly. Tuna accepts and appreciates neck scritches with the scratcher tool. He quickly paces the front of the kennel rubbing his torso against the scratcher tool while vocalizing. He does not overstimulate or show any defensive behaviors today. 10/10/26 FB79 When tuna heard he open the room door he quickly darted into the den just to poke her his head out and watch me with wide/dilated eyes. He watched as i worked around the room but when i approached to place treats in him kennel he pulled his head in and could be heard hissing. Soon he peaked back out to watch but i never saw him enjoy his treats
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Energetic
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Affectionate,Insistent,Demanding,Playful,People oriented,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: 9/08/26 Initially Tuna solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes on his cheeks he begins to snap at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation as Tuna did show signs (tail flicking, body rippling) during the assessment. 10/10/26 Upon re-evaluation, Tuna has show a major improvement in terms of his threshold for touch and petting. In fact, he actively solicits attention and pets enthusiastically and tolerated a ~4 minute long interaction where he was consistently leaning into and head bunting the assessor's hand and rolling around as he rubbed his cheeks along the cage furnishings, accepting pets along his back - relaxed throughout. Tuna is certainly a very social, insistent/demanding cat (intent on exploring and trying to get out of his cage at times), and high energy. It is likely that due to the adjustment period early on in his stay, resulting in potential increased environmental overstimulation as well as his high level of energy. As he has adjusted to the shelter setting - his previously noted very friendly, docile and approachable behavior has returned. At this point he is tolerant and appreciative of all pets, only escalating to some nips/bites when pet along his belly and lower chest which occurred at the end of his interaction after extended and at times rougher petting to observe for overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Tuna becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. He is a very high energy cat and will require a consistent play schedule and enriched environment in order to ensure that his high level of energy is directed to the right outlets and is also expelled to potentially reduce to potential for pent up energy and risk of increased overstimulation.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the potential for overstimulation and escalation to nips/bites - the behavior team recommends he goes to an adult-only home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 09/08/26 Tuna is sitting in kennel with paws folded under him with forward ears and moderately dilated pupils. He sniffs scratcher tool and allows a few chin scratches before lightly nibbling the tool, looking curious. When pet along his body with the tool, after a few passes his skin ripples and his tail flicks once. The assessor offers squeeze up treats in a tray that he sniffs and begins licking up. Tuna then begins rolling around and scent marking on his box, body language appearing to soften. The assessor presents their hand slowly that Tuna sniffs. He rubs his cheeks along their hand before suddenly stiffening, and snapping hard to bite at the air. The assessor withdraws their hand and interaction is ended. Tuna remains laying down, tucking his paws underneath him again. 10/09/26 On approach, Tuna is laying at the front of the cage with a curious face and and neutral body, sitting up and vocalizing as he waits to interact with the assessor. As the cage door is opened, he quickly pushes forward to poke his head through the door and looking around the room. When the assessor offers their hand, he immediately head bunts and pushes his head their against hand. They then offer the scratcher tool but to him and he again head bunts and leans into all pets with the tool, even along his back - without escalation. The assessor then tosses dry treats towards the back of cubby and be lady makes hi s way over as he continues to lean an d roll into pets. while he is in the cubby, the assessor uses the Assess- A-Hand to continue to monitor for petting -induced aggression us. over stimulation. He continues to appreciate head and check pets and seeks out those pets while also accepting continued pets on his back with out escalation. Finally the assessor pets along his head and whole body with their hand (wearing bite gloves) and he continues to show enthusiasm and appreciation for the interaction and pets. Throughout the extended petting and interaction, he shows no signs of escalation (even with rougher pets) and doesn't hiss, growl, or swat. When pet with the bite gloves at the end of the interaction, he is appreciative and tolerant of all pets - only escalating to turning to nip/bite at their hand when his belly or lower chest is touched. Tuna appreciates attention and petting, and is very people social - however he has shown major improvement related to his threshold for petting and interactions -however it should be noted that he may have the potential for overstimulation, has a high level of energy, and is very demanding of petting. Any potential adopter should have experience with overstimulation, be capable of reading body language, and know how to interact and end petting/interactions before Tuna has a chance to escalate. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
