Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Polo came into care with a female LMB. 07/13/26 Polo is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a forward, tense frame and will stare at the female. When the female disengages, he will walk away but returns with a tense frame again.

Summary (6):: 9/16/26: Polo was reported ot kennel fight when being walked out but is redirectable. 09/14/26 (Trainer Note): Polo is lying on his bed as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and will pull towards the other kennels as the exit the kennel room. When in thew corridor, Polo would walk calmly. Polo was taken into the training room and is clipped to a drag leash. The handler will engage Polo is some marker conditioning and then the 123 game in preparation for OLR training. After several minutes working on the 123 another handler enters thew room. Polo will great them with a loose body and accept pets. The handler gives Polo some treats and then Polo will continue to sit and look at them as they fill their treat pouch. The first handler counts to three and Polo will look at them as they say three and receive a treat. The handler then leashes Polo and he begins to pull towards the second handler. The first handler uses 123 again to get Polo's attention and leave the room. The handler takes Polo through B2 dues ti ISO walks, and uses 123 to stop him pulling towards the kennels. Polo is returned to kennel without issue. 09/10/26: Polo is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body and will allow the handler to clip his harness with ease. He will then come out of his kennel and be escorted outside for an enrichment outing. Once outside, Polo will continuously check in with the handler and seek rewards for checking in by returning to the handler and sniffing their hand. He will walk on a loose leash while maintaining a soft, relaxed frame as he explores the neighborhood. Once the session is concluded, Polo will be brought back to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (7):: 8/13/26: Polo is jumping and barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be clipped to his harness while being distracted with treats and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he is comfortable approaching the handler and would jump up to receive treats. He is comfortable chasing after treats that the handler would toss on the ground. He has no reactions to dogs or people and is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 7/13/26: Polo is hard barking towards the dog in a crate next to him as handler approaches. He continues to hard bark towards the other dog's crate next to him as the handler unlocks the door. He does not notice the treats the handler tosses inside right away, and the handler is able to leash while he is still barking. He notices the treats after being leash, and he eats them. He then quickly launches out of the crate and tries to lunge towards the dog in the other crate with a tense body while vocalizing. He is then taken to the yard for playgroup. In the yard, he greets the other dog with a tense body as the other dog walked around. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel, and tries to pull towards the dog in crate next to him while vocalizing before being placed in his crate. He continues to hard bark towards the crate next to him as the handler locks the door. He is able to be distracted when the handler tosses a bunch of treats. He then continues to bark at the crate next to him as the handler covers him with blockers. 7/13: Polo is attempting to kennel fight with other dogs while in his crate and when leashed and taken out. Attempts are made to reduce stimuli, but he pulls in the crate covers. Barriers are placed between him and the dog he kennel fights with the most, but Polo fixates on a back corner of his crate while hard barking and growling at the other dog. A long-lasting chew is placed in his crate to refocus him, but Polo does not take it. 7/12: Staff and volunteers report that Polo is launching himself out of his crate to kennel fight with his neighboring dogs in and out of the room.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Polo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Polo's hyperarousal reported in care, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Polo has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Polo associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Polo is noted in crate to be stress, pacing. We recommend consistent routines, enrichment opportunities, and low-stress handling may help improve his ability to relax and cope when in crates. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Polo os reported to be launching out of the kennel, barking and pulling towards other dogs when exiting and entering the room. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Polo is noted to hard pull on the leash while on walks. Continued leash-training efforts should focus on reinforcing loose-leash walking, encouraging engagement with the handler, and rewarding calm walking behaviors. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Social Hyperarousal: Polo quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Polo to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Polo.
