Animal Profile

Constantine

Hello, my name is Constantine. My animal id is #245685. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/2/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Constantine is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is a potentially under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments.

He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/12/26 FB79 C is on the top part of the kennel, with his tail tightly wrapped, wide dilated eyes and has airplane ears. He hissed when the tool was brought to his face and started to growl and grumble. However he remained very still as the tool made contact and pet down his back - he still had his ears flat to his head, a tense body and his eyes wide but tolerated touch. 2/13/26 FB61 Hunched in back of perch, body tense, head lowered and ears tilted. He makes eye contact with dilated pupils when spoken to and he flattens his ears completely as the kennel door opens. He looks so scared so I do not attempt petting today. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy and he slow-blinks hard while flinching each time a new treat is placed down. I Speak to him softly and end the session. When I check on him later I see that the treats closest to him have been eaten. 2/14/26 FB79 In the back of the kennel, Con is curled up with wide eyes and his tail slightly wrapped. He has no reaction to me slow blinking or speaking but when the noise levels in the room increase his eyes dilate and he lip licks while his tail starts to thump a few times. I leave some treats and a toy and respect his space due to how busy the room is atm. 2/17/26 Fb58 As I approach the cage he has immediately airplane ears flattened to his head and eyes wide and dilated. His body is low and tense as he presses himself to the back of the shelf and the cage. When I open the door slightly to place some squeeze up down on the shelf, she startles and looks as if he will attempt to flee. I leave the squeeze up there and instead spray a catnip pillow with feliway and offer it to him through the food slot. 2/20/26 FB79 On the top part of the kennel, Constantine has his paws tucked with forward ears and his eyes wide. He hissed when i slide a tray of treats and watched me close with now dilated eyes. He continued to hiss as i brought the tool close and when it was used to pet all over his head and cheeks. I pulled the tool away and spoke to him softly for a brief moment and he slow blinked twice before lip licking and starting to growl.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of his litterbox, Constantine is pressed up towards the back of the kennel with a low body, wide/dilated eyes and his tail out of sight; he had no reaction when the pointer tool was brought close to his face and tolerated cheek rubs as well back and body pets with the tool. However, when the assessor slowly pulled the litterbox forward he sat up with a tilted ear and a tense body; when the tool was brought in slowly he darted and quickly ran into the main part of the the kennel with his tail low and his ears flat. Constantine then moved to the top part of the kennel where he sat with his shoulders hunched in and his tail wrapped. Constantine tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
