She was able to see outdoor cats and did not spray. Energy level/descriptors: Medium Other notes: Sky has never had her nails trimmed but is unbothered when having her coat brushed. She will struggle or squirm when being picked up/held but is unbothered when being placed into a carrier. Sky can be described as an affectionate, fearful indoor cat. She spent most of her time in the bedroom. She engaged in interactive playtime more than twice a day and likes to chase and pounce on toys. She did not have a scratching post. She ate both wet and dry food.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/8 Sky is in the top cubby of her condo growling as staff approaches. Staff attempts to close off the portal opening and Sky reaches out to swat at staff and lets out a long hiss. Staff then closes the portal standing in a spot Sky can't see them and is able to close the portal. Staff is able to clean the kennel without issue but Sky growls the entire time. Staff closes the kennel door and ends the interaction there. 8/19 sky is at the top of her kennel in her cubby when staff approaches kennel sky swats and growls at staff. Sky was then closed in her cubby while staff cleaned and fed her while staff was cleaning sky was hissing and swatting at staff, Staff finished cleaning let her out of her cubby and end the interaction did not want to stress cat any longer. 8.22 Sky was in her top cubby upon approach.AS staff was climbing the latter to open her kennel she let out a low long growl. When lifting the cubby cover she hissed and lunged at the glass slamming into it. She kept doing it until staff moved away. Staff closed her in the cubby to clean and she was growling the whole time. When staff was done and opened the cubby she hissed and came lunging out of the cubby towards staff. The interaction was then ended.

Potential challenges comments:: Sky has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/26: Sky is in the top cubby of her kennel with dilated pupils and airplane ears. She lunges out of her kennel and hisses as she notices the handler approaching. The handler remains still and slow blinks at her. Sky retreats back into the cubby. As they go to slowly open the cubby door, Sky lunges forward and strikes the cubby door. She hisses and begins to growl. Temptations treats are gently tossed to her and she stops growling to eat them. A scratcher tool is offered out to her and she swats it hard, with nails extended, several times. She then bites the stick and growls. Once the tool is removed and the cubby door is closed, Sky strikes the cubby door again. She is heard growling as the interaction is ended. 7/26: Sky is laying in the top cubby with dilated pupils, ears pointed outward and back, and paws rested out in front of her. As the handler stands in front of her kennel, she begins to growl. When the growling stops, the cubby door is opened. Sky inches backwards and she stares at the handler. A scratcher tool is extended out and rested in front of her, she lets out a hiss. Slow blinks are given to her before the tool is picked up and used to pet the top of her head. She lowers her head and the handler moves to pet along her body. She hisses again. As the tool is being removed, she lets out one more hiss. Sky is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has been swatting, biting, lunging, hissing, growling and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
