At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Shawna

Shawna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of frustration and overstimulation. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Mable

Mable is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Mable has been observed to be dog reactive during her stay in the care center. In the kennel room Mable has been observed to hard bark, vocalize, and push off the wall while reacting to the other dogs in the kennel room. After reacting to the dogs Mable has been observed to spin towards the handler and snap at them. Mable has also been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Mable has been observed to jump up and mouth handlers with hard pressure. Medically Mable is apparently healthy.

Coco Puffs

Coco Puff is at risk due to behavioral concerns. His high level of fearfulness and not being able to adjust to the care center environment. Though he can be leashed with ease, he displays anxiety, including cowering, pacing, and occasional thrashing on leash. While outside of his kennel, Coco Puffs is starting to seek more comfort from familiar handlers and has been improving in the care center readily approaching staff and interacting on his own volition, leaning into petting. Medically, Coco Puffs has CIRDC and dermatitis.

Papaya

Papaya is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Papaya has been observed to be kennel reactive and rope reactive during his stay in the care center. Papaya will intensely cage fight with the neighboring dogs, at times escalating to spinning towards the handler and beginning leash biting. Papaya has also been observed to jump up and bite the leash while on walks. While with the handler Papaya is receptive to treats. Medically Papaya is apparently healthy. Cole

Cole is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Cole has been observed to be highly dog reactive during his stay at the care center. Noted to bite and tug on the fence when seeing another dog on the other side. While on the street Cole is observed to become tense, posture forward, pull and whine when seeing another dog. While with handlers Cole is observed to have a neutral body. Medically Cole is obese.

Fluff Fluff

Reserved
Fluff Fluff is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Duck Duck Goose

Duck Duck Goose is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Duck Duck Goose has been highly social with handlers and staff, engages with toys and enrichment games, but was noted to become aroused and leash bite intensely during her initial assessment. In the kennel, Duck Duck Goose becomes highly reactive to other dogs, escalating to darting to either side of her kennel while hard barking, growling, snarling, screeching during cleaning, walks, or when other dogs pass her kennel. When returning smaller dogs to the kennels above hers, Duck Duck Goose snaps at the smaller dogs, catching their bedding and pulling it into her kennel. Her kennel is covered to reduce visual stressors, but Duck Duck Goose pulls the covers into her kennel and shreds them. Medically, Duck Duck Goose is apparently healthy.

Precious Lady

Precious Lady is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She is a sweet, mature cat that is chronically underweight. We suspect inflammatory bowel disease. She needs placement for a hypoallergenic diet trial and advanced blood tests with a local veterinarian who can manage her long term care.

Eight

Eight is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. Eight arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Eight has been observed to jump up and tug the leash into kennel when handlers are attempting to leash him. When leaving kennel Eight has been observed to intensely cage fight with the neighboring dog, noted to contort his body and push of the wall. When returning to kennel Eight is observed to spin towards the handlers and snap at them. Medically, he apparently has ottis externa, and a wound.

Badger

Badger is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care. Badger in care is fearful in care, and has hard barking, reluctant of being leashed at times and avoidant of unfamiliar staff that approached her kennel. Badger has shown some improvement in care, but still consistently displays being uncomfortable with handling with staff and chooses to avoid interaction even with familiar staff. Medically, Badger is apparently healthy.

Ember is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is an under socialized adult cat, is not thriving in the care center, and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust/decompress, and who have experience with helping a fearful/under socialized adult cat adjust to strangers.

Silver

Silver is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the home. Due to a bite incident involving a the adoptors adult child. Silver quickly bit the adoptor's adult child’s right forearm, resulting in scrapes that broke the skin and drew blood. More detailed information on incident provided in behavior assessment. In the care center, Silver has displayed social behavior and seeks attention from staff. Silver is starting to show signs of FAS often heard high pitch barking towards people and dogs passing his kennel. Medically, Silver is apparently healthy.

Lotus is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in her previous home. Lotus in her previous homes has been reported to become quickly aroused during play, and has been reported to have a poor bite inhibition. Lotus has drawn blood on one occasion during play/her heightened state of arousal and would need careful management of her arousal. Lotus is highly social in care and noted to be in her previous homes. Medically, Lotus is apparently healthy.

Luna

Luna is at risk for behavior due to deterioration. Luna has begun to deteriorate after about a month in care. During socialization, she has been seen pacing the length of the yard. She has been difficult to interrupt and jumps up at handlers while in this aroused state. It is in her best interest to leave this stressful environment. Medically, she has folliculitis at muzzle. She is otherwise healthy.

Sir Beaver

Sir Beaver is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Sir Beaver is not acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Sir Beaver has began to duck and shy away from staff members trying to leash him, which is a new behavior he is displaying along with high levels of kennel stress, lunging at his kennel door at passing staff and heavily panting in his kennel. Medically, Sir Beaver is apparently healthy.

Holly

Holly is at risk for behavior reasons. Holly was brought to the care center as a stray with bite wounds on her face. Holly has an extreme reaction when she sees other dogs in the care center, redirecting and biting onto items around her in the yard. Holly has no bite to a person; however, in this environment she is a bite risk to staff. She should be the only pet in the home. Medically, Holly is healthy.

Spice

Spice is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Spice has been observed to be fearful during his stay. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail, and maintains his distance from hander. When approached Spice is observed to escalate to growling. During a reassessment Spice became tense with a tucked tail, avoidant, ad began seeking exit when a collar was placed on him. Medically Spice is receiving treatment for CIRDC suspect for pneumonia.

Ladybird

Ladybird is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Ladybird has been observed to be anxious and fearful during her stay in the care center. Ladybird has been observed to be heavily panting and vocalizing during her assessment. In kennel she has been observed to be hypersalivating, pacing back and forth. and chewing on the kennel wall. She has also been observed to rush to the front of the kennel and muzzle punch the door. While out with handlers Ladybird walks with a loose leash and is receptive to treats. Medically Ladybird is apparently healthy.

Tux

Tux is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Tux in the care center has not acclimated well to the care center environment, and on intake has thrashed, alligator rolling and bit as her leash. In the care center remains stressed in kennel, pawing at her door and during interactions remains highly defensive, fearful, and shutdown with any handling attempts made. Medically, Tux is apparently healthy.

Salvador Dogi

Salvador Dogi is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Salvador Dogi in the care center has been struggling to acclimate despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Salvador Dogi has began to kennel fighting leaving and entering kennel rooms, and is highly dog reactive when being walked making it difficult to walk him safely. Salvador Dogi during interactions is social with staff, but becomes restless and struggling settling on his own. Medically, Salvador Dogi is apparently healthy.

Shadow Boy

Shadow Boy is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns. Shadow Boy in the care center has been intensely fearful, avoiding interaction from staff and remaining aloof despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Shadow Boy has began to mount several staff during interactions, and in one occasion began to growl while mounting staff members making it difficult to handle him safely at times. Medically, Shadow Boy is healthy.

Donnie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Donnie has been highly stressed in the kennel despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Donnie heavily pants, hypersalivating and has troubling settling and acclimating in her kennel. Donnie is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Medically, Donnie is clinically healthy.
