Animal Profile

Ella

Hello, my name is Ella. My animal id is #254007. I am a female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 5/16/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Ella is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Ella tolerates attention and petting but may feel stressed in the shelter environment and could be intimidated by small children. She tends to be a bit more independent and might need time to adjust and warm up to a new home. Based on her behavior at the care center, she would likely thrive best in an experienced, adult-only household.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/20/26 Vol. Ella was lying with eyes closed on top of the den. When spoken to, she was initially relaxed, ears up, pupils neutral, blinking slowly but tensed up as the tool with the purée was extended. After withdrawing the tool, she was offered several rounds of crunchy treats that she ate eagerly, but crunchy treats offered on the tool were met with a hiss and attempted swat. She recovered somewhat, keeping her mouth tight, blinking and licking her lips twice, then settled back in loaf on the den, making soft eye contact. Conflicted. 5/23/26 FB73 Ella is laying curled up in her top cubby, head up and observing the room with wide eyes and dilated pupils as the handler approaches. She leans forward to sniff their hand before pulling back. When petting is attempted, she flinches back to avoid contact. She is offered crunchy treats and eats a few of them, body tense as she eats. A squeeze up is offered and she remains tense, not eating it but appearing interested as she leans forward to sniff it. Squeeze up is left on a tray in the cubby with her and the interaction is ended. 5/22/26 Vol. Ella was in a loaf position with dilated pupils, forward ears and whiskers drawn slightly back. She leaned forward to sniff a peacock feather slowly moving at her foot level. When the feather was raised a little higher, Ella lip-licked and hissed with one paw raised. She then came forward to eat tuna from a tray. Ella rested one paw on a small catnip mouse placed next to her while she ate. She was left with the toy and extra dry treats. 5/24/26 Vol. Ella was sitting in loaf, facing the back wall, in the top cubby. When I opened the door, she turned her head to me, and her pupils were a little dilated. I briefly touched her on her back, and she meowed and looked like she might nip. I removed my hand, talked to her for a bit, and then put treats by her side. She did not react to my hand when I placed the treats in the cubby. She looked tense when I tried to engage her with the feather toy. 5/26/26 FB47 Ella is laying comfortably in the cubby, alert and sniffing treats, and allowed the assessor to approach and give a little petting. She then became slightly reactive, pulling back and lifting her head, at which point the assessor gently pulled away so as not to cause the interaction to escalate further. He left catnip and treats. 6/3/26 Vol. Ella was in cubby, resting in loaf position. Her eyes were wide, with normal pupils, and her ears were perked forward. She did not show interest in treats. She watched a pipe cleaner toy for a few moments but swatted fearfully when it came closer. She quickly settled back into loaf position, although her body appeared somewhat tense. GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/19/26 Ella was resting on top of the den and appeared alert with neutral eyes and relaxed, forward facing ears. She slowly engaged by sniffing the hand and initially allowed petting, head bunting, and body leans. After a few strokes, she attempted to nip, but the assessor's hand was pulled away and she missed. She then hissed, at which point the assessment was ended to reduce stress. Ella was curious and energetic in the main kennel and then moved into the cubby, where she remained curious and alert. She came forward to sniff treats, and when petting was attempted on the head, she immediately swatted the assessor, but without claws. Ella tolerates attention and petting but may feel stressed in the shelter environment and could be intimidated by small children. She tends to be a bit more independent and might need time to adjust and warm up to a new home. Based on her behavior at the care center, she would likely thrive best in an experienced, adult-only household.
