Pre-Screener FormGuidance is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner states that he is a friendly, high energy, and playful dog. Since his arrival, Guidance has displayed fearful defensive behavior. Observed to low growl, pant, and become tense during his intake. Throughout his stay he has slowly warmed up to select staff and tolerated handling. However, he has started showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Observed to spin and pace, and most recently, he's throwing his body onto the transfer door repeatedly. Medically, he has lameness in his left hind leg.

Guidance is a 1.5-year-old large mixed breed who came to ACC as an owner surrender when his family could no longer keep him due to housing issues. In his previous home, he lived with adults and another large dog, and was described as playful, friendly, and high-energy. Here at the Care Center, Guidance has shown fearful and defensive behaviors, so he is available only through one of ACC's New Hope partners. My Ideal Home Guidance will do best in an experienced, adult-only home that can provide patience, structure, and time to help him decompress. A calm environment with consistency and positive reinforcement training will help him build confidence. Good with Kids? No - Guidance should go to a home with no children under 13 due to his fearfulness. Good with Other Pets? In his previous home, Guidance lived with a large dog and was playful. Here, he has greeted other dogs with a soft tail wag, but careful introductions are recommended. No cats have been observed in the shelter, though his former family described him as playful with them. Leash Manners Guidance can be tense and hesitant on leash, sometimes balking or pulling away from noises. He will need patient, reward-based training to build his walking skills. Overall Health Vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative, and not yet neutered. Recently treated for kennel cough and currently stable.

He does not pause for treats, and begins throwing himself into the transfer door repeatedly. This was observed during quiet time as enrichment was passed out. 10/5/25: Guidance is barking at the front of his kennel door as handler approaches. He then begins to spin around and jump and bark at his transfer door at the back of his kennel. He is able to come forward again for treats and is leashed with ease. He then pulls hard towards a dog in kennel on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead with a tense body and would hard stare and pull and lunge towards birds, dogs and people. He is unable to be redirected with treats sore toys. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he has a loose body and would approach the handler to receive treats. He would have a tense body and would head hip while being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues.

He is then taken to the driveway, where he would remain aloof throughout his walk. He would sniff around and relieve himself in multiple spots. Guidance would also accept treats from the handler with a soft mouth but shortly after spit them out. He would spot a dog entering the driveway and would remain neutral-bodied and continue the walk. He is then clipped and brought back to his kennel with ease. 9/25/25: A staff member was walking past Guidance's kennel. Guidance was at the back of his kennel laying down. As the staff member passed he come to the front stands over his full food bowl, head down but eyes looking up at the staff member. 9/25/25: Guidance is sitting at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He stands up and allows to be leashed. When exiting the room, Guidance fixates on the kennels, attempting to push off of the handler to get closer. He is brought to the yard. When walking around, another dog in a playpen approaches him. The two dogs sniff each other briefly before the handler pulls Guidance away. The other dog reacts towards him, and Guidance pulls towards his direction, but the handler pulls him away again. Once entering an empty playpen, the handler walks Guidance around, and he eventually relieves himself. The handler gently pets his head but he quickly moves his head away. The handler clips their leash. Guidance again pulls towards the kennels and then enters his kennel with ease. 9/21/25: Guidance is laying at the front of the kennel with a neutral body when the handler approaches. The handler calls him to the front and offers a treat. Guidance is not receptive and lays down at the front of the kennel. The handler is able to easily leash him. The handler opens the door wide and he hesitantly exits the kennel. He is then taken to the yard. While in the yard he sniffs around and relieves himself. When returning to kennel the handler is able to clip their leash and he is returned with no issue.
Summary (7):: 9/19/25: Guidance is laying in his kennel, tense body, wide eyes and ears pinned back. Handler tosses in a treat, Guidance sniffs it but does not eat it. As handler unlocks the kennel door, he sits up but faces away from handler. Leash is presented for Guidance to sniff, which he does then turns away. Handler is able to lean in and drape the loop on him. The door is opened wide and he stands at the front but does not step out. Handler tries to coax him with treats and baby voice but he remains in kennel. After some time he sits. Handler places pressure on the leash and he comes out and is walked on the street. He is tense bodied, tucked tail, hypervigilant, looking around. He is constantly looking back at handler while remaining at the very end of his leash. He walks low bodied returning and darts away from barking dogs and other noises. 09/17/25: Guidance is standing with tense body, wide eyed looking up at handler as kennel door in unlocked. Guidance is offered treats and dropped into kennel, he sniffs but does not take any. Guidance does approach front of kennel, however lays down as handler attempts to leash. Guidance is laying flat however with head held up to allow easy leashing. Guidance is continues to look up at handler with wide-eyes, but is soft bodied. Handler steps back from door while Guidance is leashed, and waits for Guidance to step out. Verbal coaxing is ineffective to lure Guidance out, but with very mild leash pressure Guidance stands and walks out of kennel. Guidance is somewhat tense bodied, tucked tail, but walking beside handler with mostly loose leash. Guidance occasionally baulks during walk out if MACC and on sidewalk when any leash pressure is applied. Guidance relieves himself during walk, maintains tense, and at time neutral body during walk. Date of initial:: 9/16/2025
Summary:: Low growling, tense, not interested in treats
ENERGY LEVEL:: Guidance is described as high energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Guidance's fearfulness, Guidance should go to a home with older children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Guidance's behavior in the Care Center, Guidance should go to a New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Guidance was reported to be partially house trained. Positive reinforcement should be used to help manage this behavior. Resource Guarding: Guidance is observed to become tense when with a toy and with food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Guidance mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Guidance is highly fearful in the Care Centers and was observed to growl and lip curl at staff. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Guidance associate new people with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Guidance has been observed to hard stare and lunge towards people and dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected and even after moving away from the stimuli Guidance continues to turn around and react. In the kennel room Guidance pulls hard towards other dogs in the kennel room with a tense body. Guidance will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
