Ice Age

Hello, my name is Ice Age. My animal id is #254993. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/20/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Ice age needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a young friendly dog with pneumonia and is not eating in shelter. He needs supportive care in a hospital setting in order to recover.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Ice age needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a young friendly dog with pneumonia and is not eating in shelter. He needs supportive care in a hospital setting in order to recover. Meet Ice Age! Ice Age is an active, playful dog with a friendly personality and a love for spending time with his people. He enjoys relaxing in the bedroom and living room and is happiest when he has a comfortable space to hang out and be part of the family. While Ice Age enjoys affection, he prefers interaction on his own terms and appreciates having his boundaries respected. He knows the commands "sit" and "come here," and he's especially motivated by his favorite treat-Slim Jims! Ice Age can be fearful when it comes to grooming. He does not enjoy baths or brushing, so he will thrive with a patient adopter who can help him build confidence and make grooming a positive experience. One of Ice Age's best qualities is his social nature. He is friendly, outgoing, playful, and tolerant around dogs, children, and strangers, making him a wonderful companion for a variety of households. If you're looking for a fun-loving, active dog who enjoys companionship and has a sweet, easygoing personality, Ice Age may be the perfect addition to your family!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ice Age so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Ice Age's lack of impulse control and fearful disposition, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment it was reported that Ice Age would frequently jump on handlers and counter surf. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Social Hyperarousal: During his assessment Ice Age was observed to become excited with handling and would jump on handlers as well as escalating to mouthing handler and panting heavily. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Ice Ageto remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Ice Age. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During his assessment Ice Age was reported to mouth handlers when excited. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Ice Age's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful: During medical exams it was reported that Ice Age was tense bodied with a tucked tail. It is important to always go slow and give Ice Age the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Ice Age would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
