Poe
Hello, my name is Poe. My animal id is #250663. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 3/27/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPoe is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful and under socialized adult cat adjust to strangers.

Poe is a tiny cream-and-white sweetheart with a pink heart-shaped nose, delicate little freckles, and the gentlest soul you could imagine. 🤍✨ Right now, the world feels a bit too big for this sensitive boy, so he spends most of his time tucked safely inside his cozy cat den. But his caretakers have caught glimpses of his curiosity - especially when treats are involved. He'll cautiously peek out, investigate his snack offerings, and then scamper back to safety like the tiny, brave creature he is. Poe does not currently feel comfortable with petting or handling, and he'll need a patient, understanding home willing to let him warm up on his own timeline. In his previous home, he lived peacefully with other cats, and in shelter he has been respectful and tolerant of his feline sibling's space. This little guy may never be the life of the party, but for someone who appreciates shy, tender-hearted cats, Poe's quiet trust will feel incredibly special. 🐾

KNOWN HISTORY:: Poe was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Poe has previously lived with cats. When ARS Staff arrived to get the cats in the home, freeman nets were used and the cats were noted to not allow touch, and would hiss and swat.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/3/26 FB58 Poe is sitting up on the top shelf with a tense face and body, tail wrapped tightly and eyes wide and dilated. He hisses as the cage door is opened and presses himself further against the back as the scratcher tool is offered. He is wary and avoidant of touch. I have to handle him in order to transfer him into his sister's cage (in hopes that it helps with both if their appetites), and he will not allow toweling and moves around the cage as he hisses and lunges. I have to net him and in the process he is biting the net and once in the net, continues to hiss and lunge, attempting to swat me. After he is finally placed in the cage, he remains in the cubby and hisses each time I walk past or check on him. When I check the next day, he continues to hiss and is sitting on the top of the hide. I have yet to see him interact with Doe. 4/9/26 FB79 At the top of the kuranda bed, he is laying on his side with a relaxed body however, his ears were tilted to the side. He immediately hissed when i started to slowly open the kennel door and his eyes widened and dilated. Poe continued to hiss when the tool was bring brought close as well as when i attempted petting with it. He leaned it harshly and bit the tool while hissing and growling quietly. He kept trying to bite the tool when i tried to pet down and around his body as he tensed up, starting to sit up and leaning in to bite the tool once again. 4/11/26 FB06 Before even entering Poe’s kennel, he is inside the cave with wide eyes, lip licking, ears are turned outward and he is hissing. As I open the door and offer him a cupcake treat on the scratcher, he swats it with force. I follow him inside the cave with the scratcher but he continues to swat at it with force. He allowed for no petting or touch. 4/14/26 FB58 In his flip bed and is somewhat hidden, face and body tense - he lunges and hisses when he sees me. I leave a tray with squeeze up pushing it close to the opening with the scratcher tool. When I check back he has eaten. He is later moved to Holding to see if a quieter environment and a den will be better for him. 4/16/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face neutral with his ears forward and his pupils dilated. I speak to him softly and offer him some treats as he watches me from his den. He does not hiss or lunge - he remains hidden and observant. Appears to be doing better in holding! Hopefully he eats the treats later when he feels safer. 4/21/26 FB06 Poe was tucked away inside the den out of view. As I offered the scratcher, he swatted it with force knocking the dry treats I had placed on it all over the kennel. I then offered the scratcher with squeeze up on it, he swatted with less force then poked his head out to sniff it but then tucked back into the den. I then placed a tray with squeeze up, he didn’t swat and remained inside the den until the kennel door was closed, before he poked his head out to eat it. -GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Poe is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people, and he does avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. Please see behavior flyers. 4/10/26 Upon interacting with Poe, he displays avoidant and highly fractious behaviors due to his high level of FAS, manifesting in extreme levels of defensive aggression. When interactions are attempted, he will hiss, lunge, strike and bite at the scratcher tool. 6/10/26 The Behavior Team has begun to work with Poe again through the Fraidy Cat program and even in the 4-5 short days that he has been in the program, he has begun to show some signs of opening up to interacting with staff. Although, he does continue to stress vocalize and remains sensitive to touch, and will turn to nip the tool, and bites the Assess-A-Hand.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Poe would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/30/26 Upon approach, Poe was lying on the ledge, eyes are wide, face and body are tense. His tail is loose alongside his body and one ears is moving as he is listening to the sounds in the room. As the kennel door is opened and the scratcher is slowly offered, Poe leans his head slightly forward and sniffs. As petting on his head was attempted, he perched himself up squirming into the corner and started hissing at the scratcher. After a few attempts of trying to pet Poe on the head while he was hissing and dodging the scratcher, the assessor was able to pet him. He was perched in the corner tense and squirming. As he was pet along his body he continued squirming and hissing before biting the scratcher once. No pick up was attempted at this time. 4/10/26 Upon meeting with Poe again, he is displaying highly fractious behaviors as a result of his high level of FAS as an under socialized adult cat from a hoarding case. Due to his high level of fear, Poe is resorting to extreme levels of defensive aggression. When the cage door is opened, Poe is sitting upright on the top of the hide and he immediately tenses with ears flat to the side, eyes wide and pupils dilated, hissing. As the scratcher tool is offered out, Poe hisses again and lunges forward before swatting. When touch is attempted again, he hisses and lunges forward, biting the tool and holding on. Contact is not able to be made with Poe and both times he has had to be transferred to a new cage, he has had to be netted -lunging, growling, swatting, and biting and holding onto the net. Pick up and handling is not possible. 4/10/26 Upon re-eval, Poe is sitting at the front of his shelf eating his dry food with a mostly neutral body but tenses and hisses as the assessor begins to unlock the cage door. He backs away with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, as he stress whines/vocalizes. He watches with wide eyes as the assessor places some squeeze up down on the shelf at the front, and once they remove their hand, he steps forward with a wary body to quickly begin to eat the treat. As he is about to finish the treat, the assessor slowly offers the scratcher tool out to him, and he immediately tenses and backs away again as he presses himself to the back of the cage. He is somewhat tolerant of touch with the tool, shifting away at times and turning his head and cheeks away. After a moment, he begins to turn towards the tool as he is pet along his side hisses and nips at the tool. As the assessor then offers out the Assess-A-Hand, he hisses and bites the fake hand. No pick up. Poe is an under socialized adult cat displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and require further socialization before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
