Matthew is on the at risk list for medical reasons. Matthew has severe dental disease and was noted to have lost a pound over the two months she has been in shelter, despite a reportedly good appetite. Her bloodwork showed some abnormalities, but was not diagnostic for any particular disease. An underlying systemic disease is suspected and additional diagnostics including abdominal ultrasound are recommended. Behaviorally, Matthew is fearful and attempts to flee during medical handling.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Matthew tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/02/26 FB61 Sam does not come out of her den today. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy and try to entice her with a bubble show. Hopefully she explores the offerings later when she feels more safe. I do not push petting today... to reduce stress and the chance of creating a negative association... however I will soon, because you never know how they'll react. 6/4/26 FB58 In her den and hidden from view - I close the den portal, and remove her den cover slowly in order to be able to take a better picture of her. She is initially wary and spins in the back of the den, re-adjusting how she is sitting in her curled position, tensed and seeming to try and get comfortable while being looked at. She does step forward a little bit when I have the den door lifted to get better pictures but remains tense. Once the den portal is opened again, she steps out and is avoidant of touch and slightly flighty, but remains out and on top of the den for a few minutes. She sits and looks around, stretching her neck out with big wide eyes like an owl. 6/12/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. I speak to her softly and leave her some treats and a catnip toy in the front of her kennel. I walk away and when I check on her a few moments later I see she is at the front of her kennel, rubbing her cheeks on her catnip toy with the treats gone! She freezes and maintains eye contact with a tense expression as I lift the cage cover and I slow-blink, speak to her softly and leave her some more toys before ending the session. 6/16/26 FB61 In cat den, completely hidden from view. She does not come out today when offered treats or a catnip toy. She may be feeling more lethargic than usual today due to her URI. Needs more time. 6/22/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Matthew is crouched towards the back with wide eyes and a wrapped tail; as i tossed in treats she got spooked and existed the den with a low body and tail. She stood tense in her litterbox with hunched in shoulders and when i attempted to pet with the tool she leaned forward in what looked like an attempt to nip at the tool but no contact was made. 6/26/26 FB79 Matthew is inside of the den when i lifted the cover and she hissed with her body crouched when i spoke. She had no interest in treats and when i attempted to bring the tool in for pets she tensed up and turned towards the den door to dart out. I didn't try to pet today and spoke to her softly as she remained very tense with her shoulders hunched and her tail low. Matthew isn't ready for contact at this moment and might benefit from Fraidy Cat Club. 7/08/26 FB61 Matthew is a baby girl. She is in her den upon approach, body and face slightly tense with her ears forward and her head lowered onto the floor, her tail wrapped around her lower feet. She tolerates petting along her head and body while shifting further into her den, her ears tilting. No signs of escalation. Eats treats offered after. GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 6/1/26 Inside of the den, Matthew has her paws straight out and his body neutral with a loose tail; however when the assessor spoke and he saw the tool about to enter the den, she tensed up backed himself into the corner and brought his shoulders inward. She didn't tolerate any petting as she ducked and dodged the tool but after a few moments of holding the tool still she briefly tolerated pets on her cheeks with his eyes wide/dilated and his ear titling. Matthew remained pressed to the back of the kennel tensed with her tail wrapped. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 7/2/26 Upon approach, Matthew is inside of her den. When a scratcher tool is placed in front of the den, she has no reaction. The assessor removes the den cover and finds she is crouched inside watching. She has wide eyes, forward ears and shows no defensive behaviors. After a few moments, she returns slow blinks and settles into a sitting position with his paws in front of him. The assessor places squeeze up inside the den and he sniffs it, though doesn't take it. She then quickly moves out of the den to crouching on top of it. The assessor runs the scratcher tool over his head and body. He tolerates all touch though very quickly darts away from it, attempting to crawl behind the den and then coming forward as if to run out. She has wide, darting eyes and a low tail. She shows no defensive reactions but still appears fearful. Due to her noted history of attempting to flee and his high FAS, no pick up is attempted. 8/2/26 Matthew sits at the top of her den upon approach. She sits in a relaxed loaf position, her ears are forward and her face is neutral. When greeted by the assessor and the kennel door opens, her body tenses a little and her pupils enlarge slightly. When offered squeeze up treat in a plate at the front of the den, Matthew comes forward and begins to eat. The assessor approaches Matthew slowly with the tool allowing her to smell it first before proceeding. Matthew tolerates head, neck and body touch with the tool. The interaction causes her to tense her body and take a step back. She shows no defensive behaviors. When this part of the assessment is done Matthew slowly jumps down and retreats in to her den. After 20 seconds she reemerges jumping back on to the top of the den to finish her treat. She watches the assessor carefully, her body tense but loosening as she eats. Due to her noted history of attempting to flee and his high FAS, no pick up is attempted. Matthew tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
