Twilight Sparkle
Hello, my name is Twilight Sparkle . My animal id is #251078. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 5/24/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - surgical complications.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTwilight Sparkle is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Twilight Sparkle was brought in as a stray; there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. It was noted that following her spay when she was adopted, she was returned due to not eating in her new home.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/6/26 FB73 Twilight Sparkle is laying in her den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and body tense as the handler approaches. When the den door is lifted, she low growls and hisses. She is tolerant of all petting with the scratcher tool but remains tense, leaning away as she is pet. 4/8/26 Crouched in the cubby with eyes wide. Slowly retreats and hisses, avoiding contact. Ate offered dried treats when left alone. 04/11/26 FB47 Twilight Sparkle was asleep at the back of the cubby, woke up and hissed at me, but then allowed me to approach with treats, which she sniffed, and then hissed again and remained in place. She allowed a little petting with a scratcher toy. 4/14/26 Vol. She was curled up sleeping in her small cubby when I approached. Opened kennel door and she hissed and growled and her ears flattened. No interest in eating Squeeze-ups. She growled at the cat dancer. Hissed at the laser but was interested enough to follow it with her eyes. Frightened kitty. 4/15/26 She hissed from a distance when approached with the assess-a-hand, vocalized with stress meows, and avoided contact throughout the interaction. She ignored the offered treats. Twilight is up at the front of the kennel rubbing against the scratcher and meowing. She seems to be in heat. She leans into pets on her head and neck, and tolerates the cleaning of crusty stuff around her eyes. She continues to rub against the bars of the kennel, crouching low and lifting and wriggling her read, continuing to seek attention. Behavior may not be representative because of her condition. 4/24/26 Vol. Curled behind privacy paper back of cubby - raised head and hissed when lifted it to say hi. Put treat bowl in main cage by entry, she was watching, erect, could see some whiskers. Approached with hard treat on scratcher tool, no reaction. Let rest and removed. Opened cubby, she was erect and tense in the back. Approached with hard treat on tool, she sniffed and slipped out to shelf to sit and meow. Opened main cage and she slipped back into cubby. Ended interaction. 04/28/26 FB47 Twilight Sparkle is in heat and is now calm and approaches gently. She is sweet and, while slightly unsure of interactions, she allows petting all over and eats treats. She was petted on her cheek, head, and along her back, and she did not show any fear or obvious concerns. Pick up was not attempted. She will likely revert to prior behaviors when she is out of heat. 5/29/26 FB09 Twilight Sparkle was lying in her den with neutral eyes and her paws tucked close to her body. When the den cover was lifted, she let out a hiss then began low growling. She cautiously sniffed the treats offered to her before licking them up. She resumed low growling after eating, shifting further to the back of her den. CONTINUED IN GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Twilight Sparkle has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 04/06/26 Twilight Sparkle is laying in her den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and body tense as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, she begins to growl, swatting hard towards the den door. Twilight Sparkle tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool but leans away when she's pet, continuing to low growl. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior and interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 05/27/26 Twilight Sparkle was lying in her den with dilated eyes, and shifted further towards the back of her den when the handler approached. When lifting the den cover she hissed, then continued to low growl. When offering her Squeeze-ups on the click stick, she began licking the treats. When transitioning to pets using the click stick, she backed away and hissed, quickly swatting at the stick. Her low growling resumed as the handler ended the interaction to reduce FAS. Twilight Sparkle is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
