Dior
Hello, my name is Dior. My animal id is #254942. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/20/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.
Dior is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Dior displays fearful and conflicted behavior, including growling when approached, wariness of handling, trembling, and tensing during physical contact. She may become fixated on dogs in the environment and has been observed pulling toward and vocalizing at other dogs during walks. Dior is social with staff when they go slow with her, seeks out proximity to some handlers, and will lean into petting when comfortable but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Dior is slightly underweight and has a mass on her tail.

I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Dior is a victim of circumstance. She lost her family when they were deported. A family member took her in and was trying to find her a home, but ultimately she came to us in hopes of a new start. Dior is just a joy. She is large, jowly, and so very sweet. We quickly learn Dior knows all the tricks - sit, down, paw, and even a crowd favorite, roll over! She easily flops onto her back, waiting for her congratulatory belly rubs. She tips the scale at 85 pounds, but is demure and gentle enough to pass for less. Dior has been reported to be very fearful at the shelter, sometimes just seen shaking. When we meet her, she has had some time to acclimate to her new surroundings and seems very brave, soft, and social. She plays with toys, snuggles, and snacks. Dior is about 2 years old. She spent most of her time in the basement or backyard in her previous home, but we have limited information about that.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Kennel presence/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Upon intake Dior barked and growled at staff when they entered the waiting room. Staff asked the clients to place a slip leash on Dior, remove their collar, and walk her into the hallway. Once there, clients passed the leash to staff. Dior walked easily back to medical. Due to flinching, barking, and growling, staff used a hook to remove her leash.Always allow Dior to approach new situations at her own pace, and never force her into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce her fearfulness and build her confidence. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Dior is noted to bark and lunge at dogs during her walk. Teach Dior alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" cue when she sees a trigger. Consistent training and positive reinforcement will help reduce her reactivity over time. Please see the handout on leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
