Animal Profile

Eloise

Hello, my name is Eloise. My animal id is #257991. I am a male black tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/24/2026.

Eloise has been added to the at risk list for medical reasons. He has very painful gum disease, and he gets agitated if you go near his mouth. He is eating some canned food, but he is underweight and unthrifty. He may need full-mouth, teeth extractions and anti-inflammatory medications. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Eloise has been added to the at risk list for medical reasons. A volunteer writes: Police were alerted by a Good Samaritan about a dog crate containing nine cats sitting in a big mess...Young cats, middle aged cats and one oldie, Genevieve. All on the thin side, the young ones needing mostly just basic care and love(some have already been adopted). When staff brought Eloise to the adoption area, I thought he was one more of the many seniors who arrived at the care center over the last few days. Eloise is a very poorly kept(he was bathed in the medical room) and very underweight(5 lbs)Tuxedo with a hanging tongue and a thick saliva as he has severe and painful stomatitis for which he gets symptomatic treatment. One year old...There must be some mistake....Well, no, Eloise is a youngster whose Lucky Star never shone on. He stayed crumpled in a corner, defeated and likely hoping to be left alone. I padded his kennel with freshly bought baby blankets and gave him "Delectables" which he ate almost in its entirety. He put up with some petting and turned around, asking for a rest. Right now, we are trying to make Eloise comfortable and make sure he eats. What he needs, beside veterinary follow up, is a caring and experienced foster/adopter and a home sweet home where he will feel safe and loved. Will you be Eloise's real Lucky Star?

My medical notes are...

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Eloise is sitting up in her den. When the den cover is removed, he sits up and looks curiously. When the assessor slowly offers their hand, he squints and backs away. The assessor uses the scratcher tool to pet her softly on his cheeks and along her body and he continues to flinch away. The assessor offers squeeze up treats that he eats readily, but Eloise remains uninterested in human touch, though there is no escalation. Eloise tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
