Hockey
Hello, my name is Hockey. My animal id is #245633. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 5 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/25/2026.
Hockey is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In his previous home, Hockey bit a family member during an attempt to place a leash on him. His teeth made contact with the person’s hand, resulting in broken skin. While in care, Hockey has been observed displaying reactivity toward other dogs and has occasionally kennel fights. He has also been reported to exhibit resource-guarding behaviors around food and toys. Hockey actively engages in training and is highly motivated by treats, which can be a valuable tool in supporting his continued learning and behavior development. Medically, Hockey is healthy.

Meet Hockey! Hockey arrived as an owner surrender when his family was moving and couldn't keep pets. He appreciates slow introductions to new people and places and loves to be loved - on his own terms. He's ready to learn and would thrive with a patient person who has time to work on training and help him build confidence. My Ideal Home Hockey would do best in a calm, adult-only home with someone who can provide consistent, positive reinforcement training and predictable routines. A household without other animals (or one willing to manage very gradual, supervised introductions) and an adopter experienced with canine body language will help him feel safe and successful. Good with Other Pets? Not recommended as an automatic match. Staff have observed that Hockey does not always like to share food, toys, or bedding, so he's likely to do best as the only pet or with carefully managed introductions and ongoing supervision around other animals. Other Fun Facts Hockey is affectionate when comfortable and truly enjoys learning - brush up on your training skills with him! He can form a strong bond with the right person and loves attention on his own terms. What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I really enjoy toys! I'll let you know my favorite one when we meet! I am playful and cute! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Shortly after, he is returned for his assessment. Once completed, returned to his kennel with ease. 3/8/26: Hockey is lying down on his kuranda bed as handler approaches. He would quickly sit up as he notices it's a familiar handler and would approach with a soft body and widened eyes. Hockey is then easily leashed and removed from the kennel, where he would walk alongside the handler and periodically walk in front on a loose leash. Hockey is then taken to the play yard; handler then places him on a drag leash, where he would become highly exuberant and begin to zoom around the pen. Handler walks towards the bench, and Hockey quickly follows. Once Handler sits, Hockey would sit on the handler's feet and rub his body against their leg for a brief second. Hockey would allow handler to pet him all over and would begin to lie belly side up and allow the handler to pet him. This would go on for a few minutes, and then Hockey would begin to play with a toy and keep himself occupied. Shortly after, he is then easily re-leashed and returned back to his kennel with no issue. DZ

On the street, Hockey walks ahead with mild to no leash tension; he has slight interest in people and when he sees dogs, he’s easily redirects when the handler calls him. Hockey also sits with and without the given command; he takes treats and pets. Upon entry, the handler undoes the leash harness, clips the leash, and returns Hockey to his kennel with ease. 3/02/26: As handler approaches Hockey's kennel he will approach with slightly widened eyes. Once he notices it's a familiar handler he becomes soft and loose-bodied with a wagging tail. He is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel; he would have a mild pull ahead of the handler. Handler then places Hockey in a slip-lead harness, which he tolerates but would periodically attempt to bite at, which stops as the walk progresses. Hockey is then taken to the play yard, where he is then placed on a drag leash; he would begin to explore his surroundings and not react towards any passing dogs or people. He would relieve himself in multiple spots, and as handler goes to sit on the bench, he would sit next to them and allow the handler to pet him continuously. Handler would then toss him a toy, which he would begin to play with and keep himself occupied with. Shortly after, he is then easily re-leashed and returned back to his kennel with no issues. 2/28/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Hockey's harness was found ripped apart in kennel. 2/28/26: Hockey is being walked to play-yard by two staff members for photos and video when Canine Behavior is going to retrieve him. Canine Behavior follows to observe behavior stays outside of play-yard. Hockey is highly social with staff members in the play-yard, leans in for contact, engages with a tennis ball. When the tennis ball is in his possession, Hockey does become tense when staff approach him, but trades up for treats and other toys. Hockey is fitted for a harness, the harness has to be refitted multiple times. Hockey tolerates this well however at times pulls back from handlers and lip licks. He is given treats, verbal coaxing and eventually fitted for harness. Canine Behavior observes Hockey resume play and social behavior (taking treats and soliciting petting) before leaving the play-yard.

He backed away with the handler, as well as "played up/down on steps, and followed without looking (back)". 2/25/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Hockey did not react to an off leash dog coming towards him, and followed the handler's lead attentively. 02/24: Volunteer EN: Hockey is a great street walker, only pulling slightly on his leash but easily managed. He readily sits for treats and is incredibly sweet and affectionate. He loves the backyard. 2/22/26: Hockey is loose and wiggly at the front of his kennel. He is easily leashed. He pulls moderately out of the building and on the street. He takes treats and allows petting. He pulls moderately back and enters his kennel willingly. 2/21/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Hockey was soliciting pets from handler. Pre-clip sign removed due to less handling sensitivity. 2/14/26: (Hockey presents the same behavior noted in the previous EN). Hockey is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, and wide eyes while repeatedly licking his lips. He is observed to have saliva on his mouth, as well as his neck and chest is wet from the saliva. The handler gives him a treat and leashes him, removing him out the room. On the street, Hockey walks ahead with mild leash tension. He stops to relieve himself a few times. Hockey also has no interest in passersby. He allows pets from the handler as he stands on his hind legs. While walking back to the shelter, Hockey increases leash tension as he slightly pulls ahead. Upon entry, the handler pets Hockey once more. Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and returns Hockey to kennel with ease. 2/7/26: Hockey is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, and wide eyes while repeatedly licking his lips. Summary:: Tense, low body
Date of initial:: 1/23/2026
Summary:: Tense, but allows placement of muzzle and handling for exam and all tasks. Whale eye
ENERGY LEVEL:: Hockey is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to bite history and resource guarding we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Hockey's previous owner states that he will growl or bark when you try to take away food or toys. During his assessment he was observed to become tense and hover over a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Hockey's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Hockey's previous owner states that he chews on the walls in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Hockey will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Fearful Defensive: Hockey's previous owner states that he will bark and growl when startled. It is important to move slowly with Hockey, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human)/ Handling Sensitivity: Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Hockey was observed to pull off the walls and attempt to get closer to the other dogs in the kennel room. Hockey will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
