Animal Profile

Meloni

Hello, my name is Meloni. My animal id is #243059. I am a desexed female bronze dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 6 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/9/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too fearful.

Meloni is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Meloni was returned to the shelter due to anxiety-related behaviors, including destructiveness and house-soiling when left alone. Her owner also reported that she would hard bark at other dogs. In the Care Centers, Meloni has displayed fearful behavior, particularly during walks. She has been observed with a tucked tail, pinned ears, a tense body posture, and heightened vigilance. On one occasion, she sought refuge by hiding under a desk. With staff, she has warmed up slowly, accepting gentle pets, and treats. According to her owner, Meloni enjoys playing fetch with her family and likes stuffed toys. Medically, Meloni is currently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary (5):: 06/16/26: Meloni is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is slightly tense and . She is leashed while distracted with treats and is taken to the street for her walk. Outside Meloni is hypervigilant and her ears are flared forward. She is easily startled by noises or sudden movements and walks with a slightly tucked tail when people are behind her. She walks for a while and refuses treats outside but otherwise walks near handler and stops to sniff, after a bit she is brought back inside, she is returned to kennel without issue. 06/10: Volunteer Note - Just go slow when leashing and exiting the kennel, and gently encourage her with treats and words, so she knows you're someone she can trust. She was lovely on a street walk. Sweet, very alert, tail sometimes tucked a bit between her legs but she and her tail relaxed the longer we were together. She looks up at you for reassurance and responds well to soft encouraging words and gentle pets. Meloni enjoys treats back in her kennel. 6/8/26: Meloni is at the front of the kennel with a slightly tense body. She is easily leashed and exits the room. She is taken to the street where she walks with a lowered body. Meloni does not take treats that are offered to her, she is aloof with the handler and does not engage with them when called to. She is walked back to the shelter and taken back upstairs. Meloni has a lowered tense body when handler pre-clips her leash. She is then walked back to kennel and is returned to kennel without issue. 6/03/26: Meloni is sitting at the front of her kennel with neutral body when handler approaches. She gently takes offered treat and allows handler to put the leash on. She walks slowly with low tense body while exiting the room. After she gets outside, she relieves herself. She stops sometimes to sniff around and continues walking slowly behind the handler with lowered body. Meloni is not interested in treats and is not engaging with handler but tolerates petting. She is not reacting towards other dogs or people passerby. During returning she pulls hard towards elevator and in the hallway with very low body and tucked tail, looking for an exit. Handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Meloni back into her kennel with no further issues. 5/22/26: It is noted on the behavior board that Meloni is "too scared" to relieve herself in the yard.

Summary (6):: 5/20/26: Meloni is sitting at the front neutral body. She is leashed without issue. She is walked to the street where she is fearful (ears back, lowered body), hypervigilant. She walks slightl ahead of handler loose leash. When returning to the shelter, another staff member approaches from behind, waiting for the door to be opened. Meloni lowers her body further and darts back and forth attempting to flee. Handler leads Meloni away from the door so that the other staff member can pass. She remains fearful all the way back to her kennel, looking at handler frequently. Another staff member whistles so that her leash can be clipped. She goes into kennel without issue. 5/20: Volunteer Note - Very pretty, shy and fearful girl. Despite her shyness, she is curious and investigates. She may check you out and lean into you. Just go slow. 5/15/26 (PG): Meloni was standing with front paws on kennel door handler approached. She was easily leashed and taken to back yard for playgroup. Upon meeting the other dog her hackles were up and she had a tense body. Meloni was retuned to kennel with no issue. 5/12/26: Meloni is at the front of the kennel with a tense body, as the handler unlocks the kennel, Meloni jumps on her hind legs and stares towards the handler. Handler tries to leash her and she ducks away from the leash and tries to put her front paws through it. Handler is able to leash her and takes her to the street. Meloni walks with a lowered tense body. She stops to sniff her surroundings. Meloni is brought back to the shelter and brought to the behavior office for her assessment. Meloni hides under the desk, and looks to the assessor with a whale eye and tucked tail. After Meloni's assessment, she is returned to kennel without issue. 5/10/26: Meloni has been observed to jump and hard bark towards people passing her kennel.

Summary (7):: Notes from previous stay at ACC: 12/17/25- Meloni is going back and forth in her kennel with a neutral body, barking at handler as they approached. She is offered a treat which she takes gently. When handler opens her door to leash, she stops barking and stays still at the middle of the kennel. She is easily leashed, she is hesitant to come forward. Handler pets her face and neck, softly talking to her. They feed her more treats to encourage to come forward more but she stays at the middle of her kennel. Handler slowly is able to pick up Meloni. She is taken to the play yard for a dog dog. She is social with handler and gently takes treats. She is stiff when being picked up and is returned to her top kennel without issue. 12/6/25 for assessment: Meloni is laying down, soft body toward front of kennel. Meloni approaches as kennel door is unlocked, takes a treat from hand gently. Meloni is easily leashed, picked up with soft body and placed on ground. Meloni walks beside handler, loose leash. Summary:: Tense low body, and tucked tail throughout the interaction

Date of initial:: 5/9/2026

Summary:: Loose body and allows all petting for exam, seeks attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Meloni so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Meloni's previous owner states that she will have accidents a few times a week. Meloni is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Meloni's previous owner states that she is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Meloni will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Handling Sensitivity: Meloni's previous owner states that she will snap when her paws are touched, and is fearful when her collar is grabbed. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Meloni to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: During her previous assessment, Meloni was observed to display a tense body at times and would be low to the ground with a low wagging tail. During her current assessment Meloni was observed to hide and maintain a tense body and tucked tail. She has also been reported to jump at hard bark towards people while in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Meloni, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Meloni's previous owner states that she is anxious in the home. She will whine, pace, and be unable to settle. If Meloni displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Meloni's previous owner states that she will lunge, snap, hard bark, and growl at unfamiliar dogs while on leash. Meloni will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
