Animal Profile

Mama Coco

Hello, my name is Mama Coco. My animal id is #219456. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too fearful.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mama Coco is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Mama Coco was recently returned to the care center due to fearful behavior being observed while in foster. It was reported that Mama Coco would struggle settling around strangers, would bark and growl. While in the care center, Mama Coco has been observed to be highly kennel reactive. Noted to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room. After being put into kennel, Mama Coco has attempted to push out in order to continue behavior. While out on walks with handlers Mama Coco will walk on a loose leash, will accept pets, and warms up with slow approach. Medically, Mama Coco has small wound on ear that is healing but otherwise healthy.

Summary:: Wagging tail, whining

Date of initial:: 4/19/2026

Summary:: Trembling and tense body for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: Mama Coco is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Mama Coco.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to her on leash reactivity and kennel reactivity, we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Mama's previous owner states that she will have accidents a few times a week. Mama is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Fearful: Mama's previous owner states that she will bark and growl when startled. While in foster Mama Coco was reported to bark and growl at select strangers. Previously it was reported that she was fearful and easily startled by loud and spontaneous noises (Storms, fireworks, arguments, etc.). During her previous stay in the care center Mama was observed to be highly fearful, noted to keep distance from handler with a tense body and low tail. It is important to always go slow and give Mama the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mam should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Please see our handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Mama is reported to experience separation anxiety in a home environment. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Anxiety. Anxiety: Mama's previous owner states that she is anxious in the home and will pace, whine, and be unable to settle. During her assessment, Mama was observed to whine throughout the assessment and frantically jump up on the desk. If Mama displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Mama's previous owner states that she will lunge at small animals. Mama will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other small animals. In the Care Centers, Mama Coco would lunge at dogs. Recently, Mama has been observed to be highly kennel reactive while in care, noted to hard bark and pull off the wall when seeing other dogs. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
