Azara

Hello, my name is Azara. My animal id is #236220. I am a desexed female white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Azara is on the at-risk list due to behavior. Her owner describes her as a talkative and play cat that loves to play with toys. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Azara has minor dental disease.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/22/25 FB79 At the front of the kennel, Azara has a high tail with forward ears and her eyes almond when i approach, i show her the assess-a-hand and she has no reaction but when i start to bring it close she immediately starts to strike with force, hiss, growl, bite, and lung on top of while continues to swat and strike. I pulled the hand away with force and Azara stood with a tense body, arched back puffy tail and dilated eyes as she watched the tool very alertly. When i attempted to remove the tool away from her she lunged, and attacked it, biting and striking over and over until i pulled it away from her. Azara remained at the front of the kennel where she maintained a bold alert posture. 9/23/25 FB61 Azra was sitting upright in her kennel as I approached, ears forward, tail curled around her feet and face alert. Azra appears curious and calm and she has very good kennel presence, however, once you open the door and attempt petting her she swats and hisses immediately. Today I focused on building positive associations through treats and play therapy. She engages with these attempts right away – will continue to build positive associations. 9/26/25 FB61 Azara is very engaged in her play therapy session today, she watches the cat dancer toy while bouncing around her kennel, trying to get it. I speak to her softly and reward her with treats. She displays curious and soft body language for the duration of our session, however, when you attempt petting, she will escalate to swatting immediately. I do not push hands on interaction today – I am working on building a positive association. After our session is over, she watches me from her cubby with a relaxed expression and her tail curled around her feet. 9/27/25 FB79 On the top part of the kennel, Azara is watching me work in the room through the food port glass and has a neutral face and body; she meows and slow blinks when i speak but when i lift up the assess-a-hand she starts to stress meow and lifts her paw as her eyes dilate. She immediately strikes it as her ears flatten and she tenses up arching her back and starting to growl/grumble. Azara very closely/alertly watches the tool for movement as she backs away when i bring it closer to attempt to pet again and she continues to strike the tool until she turns to run and hiss from the side of her den. 9/29/25 FB79 Azara sat the front of the kennel with her ears forward her eyes soft and almond; she stood on her back legs and pawed at the glass when i bent down to speak to her. She hissed and started to swat my hand when i reached in to place down some treats but recovered quickly with a high tail as she enjoyed her snack. 10/4/25 FB79 Today, Azara displayed similar behaviors as the previous enrichment note where she was treat motivated but alert and defensive toward any other movement in her kennel. 10/9/25 FB79 Rolling around her kennel, Azara has a very loose body and chirps while showing her belly GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Energetic

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Affectionate,Demanding,Playful,People oriented,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Azara has a scratch incident that occurred while in shelter on 10/8/25: A staff member was cleaning the kennel. Azara was out of her den and once the staff member reached in to clean she jumped up and scratched him in the forearm and hand breaking skin and leaving multiple scratches. Azara appears to be a very high energy cat that may have multiple triggers to escalation - some being faster movements, her space being invaded, being prevented from moving, fast movements. She can very quickly escalate from neutral face and body posture to swatting and lunging to bite with limited warning signs. She also had a single previous scratch incident in her previous home after giving birth: Azara has scratched in her previous home when the sheets were changed in her bed after she gave birth. Client stated that after Azara gave birth she seemed to be more defensive (hissing more, not really allowing touching as much). Client said that the night Azara gave birth she cleaned up the bloody sheets and put them in trash bags to be taken out. The next morning, the client's mother went to take out the garbage. Azara was near, sniffed the bags, and began to scratch the mother's legs. The client's mother received 5 scratches. The client states this was the first and only time Azara has scratched, and she has not done it since. During her assessment on 10/15/25, Azara was much more open to petting and leaning into pets with the tool and with the assessor's hand (wearing bite gloves), but also displayed high levels of energy and seemed very interested in possibly getting out of the cage. The assessor was passively preventing her from getting out and she gave limited warning signs before swatting and lunging to nip. Later doing the same in the cubby when offered the assessor's hand and lunging to bite and swat. While she is more open to pets, she remains unpredictable and will both bite and swat multiple times.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the behaviors displayed in shelter and no other cats in the home due to previous home notes; PLEASE SEE 'KNOWN HISTORY' ABOVE FOR MORE DETAILS.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/19/25 Upon re-eval, Azara is at the front of the kennel, she has a high tail with forward ears and a neutral body as she leans up against the glass. When the assessor opens the kennel door she leans to the side and starts to enjoy the tray of treats that the assessor placed down in front of her - while low growling she eats her treat and allows all pets on her head, cheeks as well as up her back and around her body while maintaining a very low body/tail with her ears tilted all the way back almost flat to her head. However, as soon as she finishes her treats she snaps her head to the side and hiss at the assess-a-hand and flinches back in attempt to avoid contact. When still being pet with the tool she continues to hiss with her body tense and swats at the tool as she growls/grumbles while turns to enter into her den. Azara maintains a very tense body with her shoulders hunched in, arched back and low tail as she snaps back to hiss and strike the tool before fully entering her den. 10/15/25 Azara present with a much more relaxed body language - face and body neutral, ears forward, tail raised, and vocalizing at the front of her cage to solicit attention. She accepted and rubbed along the scratcher tool for pets and accepted pets while purring from the assessor as they wore bite gloves. However, after 30 seconds of petting, after the assessor was passively preventing her from leaning over the edge of the cage, she escalated and nipped their hand and swatted a few times. She did not hiss or change much in posture, only pulling back and tensing slightly as she raised a paw to swat and lunge forward to nip. She moves to the cubby and when the assessor offers their hand out slowly, she again sits and with limited signs, lunges forward and bites their hand and swats multiple times, this time hissing. Azara is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, bite, and accepts limited petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
