Bellarina
Hello, my name is Bellarina. My animal id is #240474. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - cannot afford vet bill.
Bellarina is on the at risk list for medical concerns. Bellarina came in through an owner surrender as her owners were unable to afford vet care. On arrival at the shelter, Bellarina was diagnosed with diabetes. She has started insulin injections and is eating her diabetic diet with a very good appetite. Bellarina needs more care than we can provide at the shelter.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 11/23/25: It is reported by medical staff that Bellarina will begin baulking and refusing to walk while on the street. Handler attempted to lift her but she reportedly began to growl so handler called for assistance. A second handler arrived and she was double leashed back into kennel. 11/22/25: Bellarina is barking at the back of her kennel when approached. She is leashed and taken to the street for a walk. Bellarina does not relieve herself or interact with the handler. Bellarina walks at a slow pace at the handlers side. Bellarina is walked around the block but stops walking in the direction of the shelter. Bellarina attempts to walk in the opposite direction refusing to turn around. The handler gently picks up Bellarina and faces her towards the shelter and Bellarina quickly turns around. Bellarina spends 10-15 minutes refusing to walk and not reacting or treats a squeaker. A second handler is called and Bellarina is doubl leashed back to the building. 11/21/25: Bellarina is at the back of her crate as handler approaches. She would slowly approach the front as she hears the crate door begin to open. She is then easily leashed and taken for a street walk for her assessment. She would walk on a loose leash with no pulling, walking alongside the handler. While out on a street walk, she would not react towards any passing stimuli and would continue the walk with a neutral body. She is then brought inside the assessment room, where she would slowly walk around and explore the room. She allows herself to be easily collared, after the assessment she is easily returned back to her crate.

Summary:: Aloof, slowly approaches for treats, allows leashing and brought to kennel without issue
Date of initial:: 11/19/2025
Summary:: tense but allows all handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: Bellarina is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Bellarina.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No Young Children: Due to Bellarina's lack of vision and need for a slow approach as well as her reported resource guarding, we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Bellarina's former owners report she will become tense and hover over food and treats (Rawhides, Bones). Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Bellarina's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression/Handling-Touch Sensitivity: Bellarina is reported by staff to begin baulking on the street and when attempting to lift her back to the care centers she reportedly begun to growl. It is important to move slowly with Bellarina, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Bellarina to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression and Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Separation Anxiety: Bellarina's former owners report she will become anxious when left alone for long periods of time. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. She would do best in a home where a person is at home for a large part of the day or with a plan so she is not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
