Brooklyn
Hello, my name is Brooklyn. My animal id is #245571. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/31/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Brooklyn has been placed on the at-risk list due to ongoing behavioral concerns. She is not thriving in the care center environment and continues to exhibit distance-increasing behaviors. When staff enter the room, she begins hissing and persists until they exit. During direct interactions, she may hiss, swat, lunge, and spit. These behaviors have begun to cause stress among the other cats in the room. Given her elevated stress levels, it is in her best interest to transition from the kennel environment into a stable home setting. Brooklyn would do best with adopters who have experience helping fearful cats adjust and who are willing to provide her with the time and space she needs to feel secure. Medically, Brooklyn is overweight and has early-stage periodontitis but is otherwise in apparent good health.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. What do you get when you cross a cat with a couch? A cat-potato! And that's me to a T! Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/1 Brooklyn is hiding in the back of her kennel behind her bunched-up linens. When the linens are removed, she is lying in the back of her kennel with airplane ears. Staff slowly removes the soiled linens that she is lying on & after a while, she gets up and moves over to the litterbox side of her kennel. Staff puts a kennel cover over the food side of her kennel and once they're finished cleaning, they end the interaction. 2/7 Brooklyn is sitting in the back of her kennel. When she notices the handler, she begins to hiss. They near her kennel Brooklyn began to she lunges forward to swat, spitting as she does so. A scratcher tool with some squeeze up is extended out to her. She hisses at the tool before sniffing it. She licks the treat. More squeeze up is added & she hisses again. After that, she stops hissing & licks the squeeze up right away. As the scratcher tool is offered out to her, the handler moves it closer to the front of the kennel. Brooklyn follows it. When the squeeze up is finished, the handler attempts to pet her with the scratcher tool. She tolerates pets on her back & nudges her head against the tool. When they attempt to pet her cheek, she dodges the tool but then comes forward nudging it again. She accepts a quick pet on the top of the head before hissing. 2/9 When entering the room, Brooklyn can be heard hissing from behind her shorline cover. As staff interact with another cat, she continues to hiss. Brooklyn's shorline cover is lifted and he head in through the portal hissing continuously. Staff walks to her litterbox side, and lifts shorline cover offering sloe blinks. Brooklyn hisses continuously. Temptations are tossed into kennel, she inspects the temptations and turns to staff again hissing. 2/10 When entering room, Brooklyn can be heard hissing from kennel. Upon approach, Brooklyn is on LB side of kennel staring at staff and hisses when staff makes eye contact. AM wet is offered; Brooklyn sniffs but doesn't move towards it. Staff later returns; Brooklyn is on food side of kennel still hissing when eye contact is made. Staff cleans LB side and puts treats down to make her move to that side of kennel which works. When Brooklyn is on LB side of kennel, Staff gives her a den to provide a hiding space for her. When portal is opened, Brooklyn immediately goes into den. As staff cleans other kennels in same room, Brooklyn was quiet. Staff later checked on her; she was sitting next to den staring at staff and slow blinking. Staff offers slow blinks in return and ends interaction. 2/13 Brooklyn began to hiss upon hearing a staff member enter the room. The kennel cover was slowly lifted, & a scratching tool was introduced. She looked toward the second staff member in the room & hissed again before shifting her attention to sniff the scratching tool. Brooklyn then allowed gentle petting on her head, leaning into the contact. The second staff member slowly took the scratching tool, & petting her
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Brooklyn has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Brooklyn is laying stretched out in her kennel. The kennel cover is lifted and her ears flatten. She hisses as the kennel door is opened. The handler remains still and offers her slow blinks. She then stops hissing. A scratcher tool with some squeeze up is offered out to her and she hisses again. She sniffs the squeeze up and her ears go back up. The scratcher tool is used to pet her chin, she backs up. When the scratcher tool is used to pet the top of her head, she tilts her head down. As she is pet along her back, she tolerates it. Brooklyn tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
