Zoe is at risk due to behavior concerns. Zoe was surrendered to the Care Centers following an altercation with two resident dogs in the home, which resulted in injuries to all dogs involved. The owner reported that Zoe had been reactive toward other dogs for some time. In the Care Centers, Zoe has been social with staff. Medically, Zoe has bite wounds that are in the process of healing but is otherwise currently healthy.

The owner reported that Zoe attacked two other dogs in the home, biting one on the elbow and the other on the neck which broke skin and drew blood. During the incident, Zoe also sustained injuries to the face. Officers stated she was bitten/scratched by the other dogs in the home. According to the owner, Zoe began displaying aggressive behavior during pregnancy, including increased barking and territorial behavior within the home. The owner stated that Zoe was kept confined to a room due to these behaviors. After giving birth, Zoe became increasingly more protective. On the day of the incident, when the owner entered the room where Zoe was being kept, the attacks on the other dogs occurred. Upon medical examination, it was discovered that Zoe had many pinpoint puncture wounds dispersed throughout the body, mostly focused on the facial area. Due to the concerning level Zoe escalations in the prior home the behavior department does not feel that she is a safe candidate for a behavior assessment.

Summary:: Due to Zoe prior history in the home with other dogs she will not be a appropriate candidate for Play group.

Summary (7):: 2/11/26: Zoe is at the front of her kennel and starts to bark as the handler approaches the kennel. She is leashed with ease and will walk to the yard on a loose leash. Once in the yard Zoe will search for treats that the handler tosses into piles of snow. She will briefly approach the handler with a loose frame when coaxed but will quickly turn away to continue sniffing. After awhile, she is returned to her kennel with no issue and is secured safely. 2/4/26: Zoe is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, is easily leashed and brought into the behavior office. Zoe is loose/wiggly and approaches staff for petting. Zoe will play with a toy on her own, tossing it into the air and catching, repeating this for some time. Zoe remains social in the office, and when going back to kennel did bark at another dog in the hallway, but refocused easily. 01/26/26: Zoe is standing at the front of her kennel with a soft, loose body and accepts treats from the handler through the gate. She allows the handler to leash her with ease and is escorted outside for a relief walk. While outside, Zoe maintains a soft, loose frame and briefly jumps up on the handler with excited but non threatening body language. She remains socially engaged and responsive throughout the walk. When session is complete Zoe is returned to her kennel safely without issues. 01/22/26 ((KSV):Zoe is sitting at the front of her kennel and accepts high value treats from the handler while performing a sit cue on request. Handler tosses additional treats toward the back of the kennel to encourage movement and engagement. Zoe is then provided with a kennel enrichment item. Handler exits the area, leaving Zoe calm, engaged, and secure in her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13) we recommend that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. single-pet home - Due to the concerning behaviors that Zoe had in her prior home we recommend Zoe should be the only resident dog. Recommend no dog parks- we feel that Zoe should not visit dog parks due to escalation in her prior home with dogs. Place with a New Hope partner- Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Zoe be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding - While Zoe gave an appropriate warning of her discomfort (tense boy, hovers over toy), Zoe did show resource guarding to guard items she considers valuable. Her response was appropriate and we cannot be certain if this behavior will be seen in a future home environment, but out of an abundance of concern that young children may not be able to recognize or respect Zoe's signals, we are caution about this observed behavior. Please see handout on resource guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression - Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Zoe to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (dog): Officer to a call to pick up Zoe from the owner’s residence following a bite incident. The owner reported that Zoe attacked two other dogs in the home, biting one on the elbow and the other on the neck which broke skin and drew blood. During the incident, Zoe also sustained injuries to the face. Officers stated she was bitten/scratched by the other dogs in the home.
