Animal Profile

Xylos

Hello, my name is Xylos. My animal id is #244645. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/31/2025.

Xylos is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Xylos arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Xylos was noted to be social and wiggly bodied for his intake medical exam. Xylos has been observed to have poor impulse control and mouthiness during his stay. While Xylos is food motivated, he has been observed to take treats with hard pressure from handlers. Xylos has been mouthy toward the hands of staff members when leashing or during interactions. In another instance, Xylos jumped toward a person on the sidewalk attempting to mouth them. Xylos continues to be social with staff, allowing all contact with a loose, wiggly body. Medically, Xylos is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! A Volunteer Wrote: It's an absolute joy to be in this wonderful, exuberant dog's company--he's full of life and fun and yet totally unreactive to any passing dogs, birds, fast-moving objects. What he really wants to do is snuggle with his walker, and he's a mad kisser--this is a dog who kisses my hands if he can't get up to my cheeks. Xylos also loves treats, but he still took them so gently from me. Xylos, who appears housetrained and is lovely on a leash, is a heartmelter waiting for you at Manhattan!

Summary (6):: 2/10/26: It is noted on whiteboard that Xylos walked 'great on leash' and took treats gently. 2/7/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Xylos did well in the yard when handler played up/down game with him. 2/4/26: Xylos is at the front of her kennels with a loose body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handle brings him to the office where two familiar handlers are present. As they offer him treat, Xylos takes the treats with extremely hard pressure. The handler then brings Xylos out the room and into the yard. There, he is receptive to pets as he continues to present a wiggly body. The handler tosses treats to Xylos which he eats; he also doesn’t react to dogs that walk past his pen. Afterwards, the handler brings Xylos inside and returns him to his kennel. 1/31/26: Xylos is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately out of the room. He is brought to the backyard where he walks with a loose leash. He regularly turns towards the handler and jumps up. Mouthing their hand with mild pressure. He takes treats firmly where he puts the handler's hand into his mouth. Handler tries pattern games with Xylos, having him jump up on the bench and sit then jump down from the bench and sit. He will repeatedly jump up and mouth the handler's hands searching for treats. He relieves himself and Xylos is walked back into the shelter. He is returned to kennel without issue. 1/30/26: IT is reported on the behavior board that Xylos does not know what to do with himself while in the yard and suggested that handlers bring a toy. 1/30/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Xylos jumped and mildly mouthed the sleeve of a MOP on sidewalk

Summary (7):: 1/24/26: Xylos is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room and downstairs towards the street. Handler scatters treats and places Xylos in a leash harness. On the harness he walks with a loose leash. Sometimes during the walk, the leash harness will become unadjusted and he will jump back around and thrash slight. Handler adjusts the leash harness and Xylos turns and snaps. The handler scatters treats and is able to readjust the leash harness. He is walked back to the shelter and the harness is undone. He pulls hard back to kennel and is returned without issue. 1/17/26 (Playgroup): Xylos is at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, he jumps on the handler, soliciting and receiving pets. In the hallway, other dogs are present, and Xylos notices but doesn’t react. He is then brought to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). After the interaction, Xylos jumps on the handler, and they pet him, he begins to mouth their hands and leash. Once he jumps off, the handler brings Xylos to the street, where he walks with mild leash tension. On occasion, he jumps on the handler or sits in front of them for treats, which the handler tosses to him. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Xylos to his kennel. As he walks, Xylos pulls inside while looking at the kennels he passes, but enters his room with ease. 1/14/26: Xylos is observed to reach to others dogs that pass his pop up crate. He barks and moves back and forth spilling his water bowl. 1/4/26: Xylos is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He mouths at the handler's hand as they attempt to leash him. Once leashed, he is then taken outside for walk. On the walk, he has a loose and wiggly body and had no reactions to dogs. He would greet familiar handlers in the hallway with a loose and wiggly body by jumping up while on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would take treats roughly from the handler's hands. He would eat the treats when the handlers tossed them on the ground. He is comfortable being petted and would jump up on the handler with a loose and wiggly body. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

Date of intake:: 12/31/2025

Summary:: Allowed handling

Date of initial:: 1/2/2026

Summary:: Loose, wiggly, jumps on staff in a friendly manner

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Xylos so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to mouthy behavior we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Xylos has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Xylos should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Xylos has been observed to jump up on familiar handlers with a loose body. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Xylos has been observed to mouth handlers with hard pressure and take treats with a very hard mouth. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Xylos puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
