Nipu
Hello, my name is Nipu . My animal id is #93226. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/22/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.
Nipu is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would like a home where there is another cat that I can play with! Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/28/26 FB58 Up at the back of the shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He is tolerant of a few pets on his head and cheeks but remains tense and begins to lean away. He sniffs at some of the treats offered but when I check back later, he has not eaten any. 1/29/26 FB79 On the top part of the kennel, Nipu is perched with low/soft eyes and his tail wrapped around his body; he leans in to sniff the treats that i tossed in and when i held my hand out for him to sniff. He started to pull away when i attempted to pet and sat up with his eyes now wide. When i brought the tool in he quickly jumped down to the main part of the kennel then into his cubby to avoid any contact. 2/02/26 FB61 Lying on perch, body and face tense with his ears forward, his pupils dilated and his feet folded neatly in front of him. He is tolerant of petting while closing his eyes and shifting away from the scratcher tool. When offered treats he sniffs the air and he steps forward to eat them as soon as the kennel door is closed. Will continue to build positive associations to gain trust. 2/3/26 FB06 Laying neutral on the ledge with his front paws tucked under his chest, he leans his head forward to sniff the scratcher. Nipu sits up pressing himself against the back when I attempt to pet his head, but then leans his head for head and neck pets as he is sitting up. When I offered him my hand, he leaned forward with a low body and sniffed. 2/6/26 FB79 At the top part of the kennel, Nipu is pressed up to the back corner with wide eyes, his paws straight out and his tail hidden. He had no reaction to me speaking or when i brought the tool in slowly. However, he pulled away and looked away from after very briefly tolerating cheek and chin rubs with the tool. I left a catnip toyy and some treats. 2/13/26 FB58 Laying at the back of the shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated - when I attempt to move forward to get my hand near him, he flinches and pulls away quickly before he moves to almost flee. I leave him some dry treats and a catnip pillow with feliway on it. Seems to be deteriorating, will add to ARL.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nipu was lying in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his feet and tail tucked and his pupils dilated. Nipu glanced over at the assessor for a moment when spoken to and he looked around the room with wide eyes as the kennel door opened. Nipu tolerated petting along his head and body while remaining tense and turning his head to watch the hand pass along his back with his pupils remaining dilated, his body tense and his ears forward. Nipu is curious but unsure. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Nipu tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
