At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Rigatoni

Rigatoni is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rigatoni has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Rigatoni has began to dig at his kennel door, leash bite in kennel when being removed from kennel despite daily enrichment. Rigatoni is social with staff and volunteers when outside for interaction, but is struggling to acclimate in his kennel. Medically, Rigatoni is apparently healthy.

Madara

Madara is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Madara has been observed to quickly become over aroused. He has been observed to jump up and muzzle punch handlers in the face, this behavior is not able to be redirected easily. On one occasion Madar left a red mark on their face. Madara has also been observed to become tense and growl when seeing another dog while on leash. With handlers Madara has become social and allows handing with a loose body. Medically Madara has Otitis Externa.

Pringle

Pringle is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Pringle is extremely fearful in the Care Centers. During walks, she is hypervigilant, with her ears slightly pinned, tail low, and constantly scanning her surroundings. She does show some interest in treats and allows limited handling and once hard bark during her intake exam. Medically, Pringle has been diagnosed with CIRDC.

Gunther

Gunther is at risk due to behavior concerns. Gunther does have a bite history was reported to jumping on his owner, a family member pushed Gunther off and the family member was bitten on his finger drawing blood. Gunther in care was initially fearful, but has warmed up to staff slowly and is social during interactions. Medically, Gunther is currently healthy.

Blue

Blue is on the at-risk list for medical and behavioral reasons. In his previous home, his owner notes that Blue will persistently chases his tail. This behavior has been seen since he was a puppy and when became more frequent when the other family dog was rehomed. In shelter, the environment is increasing this compulsion. He needs a quiet home with a patient family willing to work on finding the appropriate treatment for this behavior. Blue is currently receiving treatment for possible pneumonia and has been started on a behavior medication plan to help with the compulsion of chasing his tail. Medically, the dog has pneumonia.

Venus

Venus is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Her previous owner reported that she lunges and growls at strangers, resource guards, and once bit and held onto a cat that approached her food. In the Care Centers, Venus is fearful but has displayed some social behaviors when offered treats. Medically, Venus has allergies but is otherwise healthy.

Tanner

Tanner is at risk due to behavior concerns. During Tanner's first stay, he was fearful but quickly warmed up. He was adopted and recently returned. His previous adopter mentioned that he is destructive in the home and reactive on leash towards other dogs. In the Care Centers, Tanner remains fearful and avoids staff interactions. He has been observed growling, tensing up, and cowering in the corner. However, he does accept treats from select staff members. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Glamorous is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Glamorous in care has been intensely fearful and not acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Glamorous has escalated to baring teeth, growling and snapping at staff members in attempts to interact with her. Medically, Glamorous has a umbilical hernia and diarrhea.

Moo

Moo is at risk due to behavior concerns. Moo was initially a fearful dog, but over time, she became more social and engaged in training. She would occasionally mouth handlers and, at times, became difficult to refocus. Recently, Moo has been struggling with the stress of her environment and has been reported to kennel fight. She recently bit a staff member on the thigh while being returned to her kennel, and on another occasion, grabbed a staff member’s pants. Despite receiving daily enrichment, Moo is no longer coping well with the stress of her environment. Medically, Moo is healthy.

Nicholas

Nicholas has developed a severe URI while in shelter. He is not eating and is on injectable and oral medication to try to support him through this infection. Nicholas needs a lower stress environment and more personal attention in order to heal.

Zima

Zima is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Zima in care has been presenting social with staff members, but has not allowed for any handling in certain areas. Zima has escalated to snapping and low growling at staff members trying to collar her multiple times within the care center. Medically, Zima is currently underweight.

Subwoofer is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Subwoofer has been observed to quickly become over aroused jumping up on handlers and mouthing them. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Subwoofer has also been observed to bark at other dogs while on leash. Medically Subwoofer is apparently healthy.

Baseball Player

Baseball Player is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Baseball Player has been observed to jump up towards handlers with a tense body and open mouth. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected using treats or squeakie sounds. During his stay in the care center Baseball Player has allowed petting from handlers. Medically Baseball Player has CIRDC and a unspecified ocular abnormality.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. She is struggling with a severe upper respiratory infection. Her high level of stress in shelter limits the medical support we can give her. She needs medical management in a veterinary clinic to recover.

Casserole is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. She is struggling with a severe upper respiratory infection while in the shelter. Her oral ulcers make eating difficult. Casserole needs medical management in a veterinary clinic to recover.

Florence

Florence is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and although a level 2 previously, she has now begun to deteriorate behaviorally. Florence used to solicit attention, lean in for petting and allowed pick up. Now she hisses and shows conflicted/distance increasing behaviors. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Florence displayed social behaviors in our care center previously and she has the potential to revert to those behaviors once she is in a more calm and secure environment.

Tiger

Tiger is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Tiger has been observed to intensely leash bite during his stay in the care center, jumping up high and biting the leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or squeakie sounds. On one occasion while leash biting, Tiger jumped up and caught the handlers ring finger. This bite did break skin and caused bleeding. Medically Tiger is apparently healthy.

Hammer

Hammer is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Hammer has displayed a concerningly low threshold for arousal as his length of stay has progressed. While Hammer has shown some social behaviors with staff and handlers, he has become increasingly more aroused - leash biting and escalating toward staff/handlers (mounting, grabbing at clothing and limbs while growling) which has made walking/handling him safely difficult. Medically, Hammer has been receiving treatment for an ear infection, undetermined allergies, and hematuria.

Crew

Crew is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Crew has not acclimated well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has displayed handling/touch sensitivity and a concerning level of anxiety and arousal. When in kennel Crew whines, paces, bounces off the kennel walls, and will dodge the lead when attempting to remove him from his kennel for walks or socialization. Crew has escalated to becoming aroused on walks or when off-leash, grabbing at a handler's arms, stomach, and side multiple times during a walk. the handler attempting to separate themself from Crew, he was only able to grab at their clothing. Crew then redirected and attempted to go for their hands. Medically, Crew has been receiving treatment with CIRDC.

Tinsel

Tinsel is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Tinsel has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is not allowing for minimal handling. Tinsel has been highly fearful, and defensive, and has been difficult to remove from his kennel safely due to his handling sensitivity. When approached in a kennel, he has escalated to growling, lip curling, and baring teeth but would take high-value treats when attempting to remove him from a kennel or coax him to walk once he was out. During his handling assessment, Tinsel would hover and body blocks the assistant when he was near the assessor. With the handler assisting, he remained and began leash biting when bringing him back into his kennel. Tinsel is now lunging, snapping, gator rolling, wailing, and flailing when attempts are made to remove him from his kennel, hurting himself in the process. Medically, Tinsel has caused himself self-trauma to his mouth and tongue in-kennel that will heal without additional treatment if moved to a less stressful environment. Tinsel is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Minerva

Minerva is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.
